  • In a 2013 game between the Bears and the Vikings, Marc Trestman decided to try a 47-yard field goal on second down. Unsurprisingly, this move backfired. This is the story behind arguably the stupidest field goal ever

As dumb as it sounds to kick a field goal on second down when running a play is still an option, there's still no way this is the dumbest FG kick of all time. That would be Atlanta's 2015 FG kick with 3 minutes left against the 49ers. It was a decision so bad, it tanked Atlanta's chances of winning simply by succeeding. They had the ball at SF's 1-yard line and were trailing by 4. I repeat, they were TRAILING BY FOUR. Reminder, a FG is only worth THREE points and you NEED FOUR. They would have been better off going for the touchdown AND FAILING than kicking a FG. At least in Trestman's situation, the score was tied and a successful FG would have actually won the game, and instead he got unlucky with a miss, and the decision to do it on second down could have been predicated on not wanting to turn the ball over. By contrast, Dan Quinn's Falcons were down by 4 and the FG was a terrible decision even despite being successful.

I think you're spot on with the 3 down CFL rules speculation. In pressure situations people tend to make gut decisions and rely on previous decisions over the context of a moment. So he got overwhelmed by the moment and did what he always used to do in similar situations, kick on second down because he's used to only having 3 downs. Then in post game he makes up BS excuses because there's no way he can admit to forgetting the rules. He'd risk being fired on the spot. What's amazing to me is that none of the assistant coaches were able to overrule him. Or maybe they lost track of the downs? Who knows? Whatever it was, it was a total systems failure by the Bears, the kind of which I usually expect from Minnesota.

I'm pretty mixed about that decision for Gould to go for that 47-yeard field goal in overtime.
The understandable reasons are that it may have been a potential game-winner and that the coach just wanted the team to "take the points".
If it was with less than 30 seconds remaining, either with the scores tied or the team trailing by three points or less, or if it was a fourth down, understandable.
However, it was a risk vs reward kick. The risk did not pay the reward and it was costly, especially in the race for a playoff spot.

Always fun to debate this stuff - but I gotta give the nod to the stupidest FG to Bill Cowher in the 2004 AFC title game against the Patriots; after rallying from 24-3 down to within 31-17 early in the fourth quarter, and with all the momentum, instead of going for it on 4th and goal at the 2-yard line kicked the FG, which only brought them to 31-20. Completely killed their momentum and the Patriots would take about 8 minutes off the clock on their next drive to the clinching score.

I remember being pissed when Tressman was hired, Arians was pretty obviously the right move at the time and looking back and the Bears messed it up. Also, if the Bears had gotten closer and made it, they would have been a playoff team with a real change of making a run. They had the second best offense in the league. Sorry, but you're being really unfair. First, I want you to watch this clip: czcams.com/video/pw0THkBL2tI/video.html. That's right; you leave out that right before OT, Robbie had ALMOST made a 66-yarder. Since it had only been minutes since that point, Trestman was probably thinking: Robbie's got a 47-yard kick, easy day. Second, you overlook possible penalties. In the prior drive, there was a false start and delay of game on Bears offense (they were playing in a noisy dome on the road). So Trestman was also likely scared of a penalty that would have moved them back 5 yards (and would have stopped the clock too) and turned a 47-yd FG into a 52-yd attempt. And yeah, he said what he said to the media, but he was not gonna say "I was scared my TE would cause a false start." One more thing. The game was played indoors, so a lot of those missed FG by Robbie were likely when he was at Soldier Field where the weather is notoriously windy. Thus, there was probably an even better chance Robbie makes that kick than your stats show, esp. given his close 66-yard attempt earlier. Regardless, that Robbie makes that kick 3 out of 4 times per your stats means there was a 75% chance the Bears would win with Trestman's call. Not defending this call -- as I still would have run it once more (giving my holder a chance to spike a bad snap on 3rd down) -- but it wasn't as crazy as you make it seem.
