    I reckon it's possible that some of the perspectives I present in this video could rustle some folks' feathers, depending upon their political disposition. However, I'm not necessarily attempting to make some sweeping statement in this video. It's really more of a reflective narrative than anything. You might say, in the words of Detective Finch from V for Vendetta, "It was just a feeling."

    I will attempt to leave as much politics out of this discussion as possible, however, due to the rather...touchy, subject matter at hand, I will provide fair warning.
    V for Vendetta is an interesting case study, at least in my view, of what happens if a repressed/fed up/overstressed population meets a government that is unwilling to change. Norsefire is very clearly against changing the status quo, as they rightly should be. But this presents an interesting case. The government in V for Vendetta is clearly a one-party system, and what little other opposition there is, is clearly a sham, such as what is happening in the Russian Federation with United Russia (the party of Putin), and the CCP with China. However, the question I would like to put forth is this. Do you believe that a V for Vendetta-esque situation is possible in a government or nation, where there are multiple parties? Western nations such as Germany, the UK, the US, and Canada, among others. Do you think this is yet another a warning against the dangers of there being a single-party state, or do you believe that this is also possible in a multi-party state?
    Sorry if this is unclear, but I would enjoy this dialogue if possible. Thank you.
    Thank you for your time.

    • @ThoughtWord
      @ThoughtWord  Před 3 lety +9

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Winston. In my mind, V for Vendetta and similar stories are fair warnings against mindlessly gravitating towards a single party, especially one that shamelessly demonizes its opposition. Relentless demonization engenders the fear that can be manipulated, controlled, and ultimately weaponized. In other words, exactly what happened at the United States Capitol. A healthy two-party system doesn't necessarily require commonality and agreement, but it should require civil discourse and respect---both of which are in sadly short supply these days

    • @henrycolestage4249
      @henrycolestage4249 Před 3 lety +4

      Winston, another issue with the Norsefire single-party state is that it is a 'religious' single party. Even though the Queen is technically the head of the church here this is not, in any meaningful sense, a religious state. Far from it, in fact. What worries me most about the state of the US (I'm retired US Navy but live in UK with my English wife) is how far the right has become religious zealots. The US is alone in the industrial world with our high level of religiousness. I'm all for individual religious liberty that does not harm or infringe on anyone else. But a theocracy is something to be seriously feared. Besides, whoever expected the Spanish Inquisition? ;-)

    As an American service member who has lived in the UK for 20 years (also married a local gal and live here permanently), V- has long been an important movie to me. I too see great parallels between the 5th of November and the 6th of Jan. These days, no one here is quite sure if they are condemning or celebrating Guy Fawkes with a bonfire. I wonder if in future generations the January insurrectionists will also be confused as to them being the bad guys or the good guys.

    Thoughtful and well crafted video. I'd like to share some of the Wikipedia passage on the difference between the 2006 film and the original 1980s comic. It touches on what could be considered a failure of nuance on the film's part, both with regards to the setting and V's charachter, when it adapted the comic.
    "The film's story was adapted from Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel V for Vendetta; this was originally published between 1982 and 1985 in the British comic anthology Warrior...
    There are several fundamental differences between the film and the original source material. Alan Moore's original story was created as a response to British Thatcherism in the early 1980s and was set as a conflict between a fascist state and anarchism, while the film's story has been changed by the Wachowskis to fit a modern US political context. Alan Moore, however, charged that, in doing so, the story has turned into an American-centric conflict between liberalism and neoconservatism, and abandons the original anarchist-fascist themes. Moore states that "[t]here wasn't a mention of anarchy as far as I could see. The fascism had been completely defanged. I mean, I think that any references to racial purity had been excised, whereas actually, fascists are quite big on racial purity."
    Furthermore, in the original story, Moore attempted to maintain moral ambiguity, and not to portray the fascists as caricatures, but as realistic, rounded characters. The time limitations of a film meant that the story had to omit or streamline some of the characters, details, and plotlines from the original story. Chiefly, the original graphic novel has the fascists elected legally and kept in power through the general apathy of the public, whereas the film introduces the "St. Mary's virus", a biological weapon engineered and released by the Norsefire Party as a means of clandestinely gaining control over their own country.
    Many of the characters from the graphic novel underwent significant changes for the film. V is characterised in the film as a romantic freedom fighter who shows concern over the loss of innocent life. However, in the graphic novel, he is portrayed as ruthless, willing to kill anyone who gets in his way..."

    I think one of the things we've learned from Jan. 6th, is that stirring a populist uprising is not as hard as one might have thought. If a government keeps its people down long enough, a lying grifter who possesses a bit of charisma can convince them that 'he alone' can save them. The messenger is often as important as the message. 'V for Vendetta' troubled me when I first saw it, precisely because of the danger of the messenger. Sure, he was 'better' than those running the government - but, was he really?
