  • Join me as I review 13 different cultivars of heirloom tomatoes that I grew this season. Tomatoes are my absolute favorite thing to grow. This is just a small selection from my fall/winter tomato harvest. I like to make tomato review videos because maybe you're looking for more information about a specific cultivar or maybe you're just looking for inspiration on some new varieties to try growing next season in your garden. In this video, I slice and taste each one giving you my honest opinion when it comes to the best tomatoes for making sauce/paste or fresh eating. Plus, I share some tips and observations after many years of growing heirloom tomatoes to help you be successful growing them too.
    Grow the same tomatoes in this video, with seeds from my garden!

    I read a pioneer autobiography in which the lady described hanging tomato plants upside down from rafters in the barn at the end of the season to get the last tomatoes

    Love that Lagos Spinach! Saw that at the 0:09 time... 🙂

      It does look like Lagos spinach but its actually a burgundy leaved celosia. Which I believe they are the same family. I have Lagos spinach growing in my garden too and the leaves are very different, but with the same kind of flowers. The Lagos spinach leaves are edible, the burgundy leaved celosia not so much lol

    The "Firali" one is sold as "Coração de Boi" in Portugal. It's Portuguese for Ox Heart as you correctly said. I just put some seeds in pots today... That's a cultivar appreciated here for its size 😉

    You don't need a serrated knife for tomatoes. Once you use a quality, truly sharp knife, you can't go back. I use a few Japanese knives that can make paper thin cuts, all without using any force. Any thin blade can be given a razor-sharp edge with a good whetstone.

    Try Sweet Aperitif cherry. Best I’ve ever had. So sweet it’s ridiculous. They make a good rustic sauce with fresh garlic….if they even make it into the house.

      I have seeds for this one as I am planning to grow it next fall. Didn't know it was that sweet. Can't wait to grow it now.

    I only have room for 1-2 tomato plants in my garden, right now. I want sauce tomatoes. Which one do you like best & is it too late to plant it, Central Florida, 9B?
    Thanks for all the comparisons I'll be planning some of these for my fall garden.

      I highly recommend Ten Fingers of Naples and San Marzano Redorta if I was to just choose 2 from this video. I have seeds on my website www.jerrasgarden.com. You would have to sow seeds asap to fit in a harvest before summer. A few videos back I made a guide on sowing tomato seeds which will help you get fast germination and growth.

    What do you fertilizer your tomatoes with?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I like Espoma Tomato Tone or any organic granular fertilizer formulated for tomatoes. I use about 1/8 cup every week, per plant.

    is there a tomato you grow in the summer?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Před 5 měsíci +3

      I don't grow any tomatoes over the summer except for Everglades tomatoes. I plant tomatoes in September and January to grow through fall, winter, and spring. The heat, rain, pests, and diseases of summer kill off my tomato plants. I yank them out in June and start over. That is how it is in FL.

      I've heard Tasti Lee hybrid tomatoes can do well in our heat. However, I have not tried it. They were commonly found in grocery stores here in Florida as they were developed for big producer farms. They will not be a big beefsteak size, but more of a uniform slicer size. Might be worth a try?

      @@JerrasGardenyep, there’s really only a few types of vegetables that can handle the summer heat in central florida.
