1:20 onwards gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it, especially the twin guitar part afterwards. The composition for that part alone is deserving of A LOT more praise.
Ever since I heard the duel for the first time I've been looking for another band or song with the same sound and I can't find it. The harmony combined with the bending is really smooth and weird in a way that I wish I heard more of in melodic death.
Whoa. It's cool seeing the dude who actually wrote this playing it. I've seen a lot of good covers, but nothing really beats the author on something like this
Brendon Smalls compositions is proof that simplicity makes for epic pieces of work! People don't always need to play fast through multiple scales to have amazing solos!
I think I see how Toki lost. Skiwsgaar ended his song immediately, he must have been worn out. But Toki, still determined and ready, tried to continue. When he heard him end it, he flubbered, and screwed the last part.
@@nepntzerZer He can't match Skwis' speed. There's one episode where he accidentally deletes Skwis' guitar part, and tries to redo it himself, and says, "It's too fasts, Skwisgaar always makes its too fasts"
What makes this series so much MORE awesome is that Small plays or crafts all his own music for the series. That's the lifeblood in the show. That's his own work double the way!
I gots to say that guys plays pretty fines to mey! Though it ams hards to admits it... There is ams a guitarrist who cans almost plays as goods as mey. ALMOST. Leanrs from hims, Toki.
I am blown away by this solo. Not because of its raw speed and a crazy amount of notes. I love Deathcore as much as the next guy. And yeah those wild solos are impressive. But what Brendon wrote here is so creative, full of riffs that I've never heard and it sounds amazing. This is why I love Dethklok. How completely original every song is and how amazingly clever and amazing it all is.
I’m a rhythm guitarist in a metal band, and our lead guitarist and I often reference the show and people compare us to Toki and Skwisgar, so for my one year anniversary of joining the band, we’re going to try and recreate this duel 🎸 wish us luck 😎
everytime I come to this video, I watch it like 10 times in a row. makes me wanna gouge my eyes out because nothing will ever be worth seeing again after watching this. but then I watch this again instead of the gouging
Thank you for the memories Brendan. From Home Movies to Metalocalypse. Ive enjoyed your work every step of the way. My daughter even pointed out your character in "Clarence" working the movie store. That was a fun little easter egg. She loves home movies. Shes not ready for Metalocalypse yet though.
For those who are interested , I recently did a full lesson video on how to play this (with tabs) on my channel : czcams.com/video/fxZDNY8jHHk/video.html I'm also almost done transcribing Toki's part, so hopefully that'll be up next week. If you've got any requests, you can email me and I will get to it when I can. Happy Shredding!
I want to thank you for one of the gratest metal show ever! I also thank you for great songs. Dethklok is one of my favourite bands, even if it's not real. Thank you Brendon Small! Btw. You rock at guitar! ;)
that was amazing and loved the Rock Opera Doomstar Requim, just wish he could get season 5 or the film going to let us finally see Salacia taken down. DETHKLOK RULES!
I found a Midi file thingy a while ago, and personally I found Toki's parts a little easier than Skwisgard's www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/dethklok-the-duel-tab-s389684t0 (only a dildo wouldn't leave a link lol. Should mention that the tab here is different from what Brendon plays in the video)
***** oh yeah the sweeps are difficult, but with practice it gets easier. Go through it slowly 1 000 times, play it slightly faster another 1 000 times then rinse and repeat until you can do it :P
i feel like the sweeps at 0:41 are hard because they are pretty stretched. maybe i should just tune down. is he in Cb standard/drop or C standard/drop?
The way you play this makes it feel as though there were certain parts Skwisgaar was trying to flatten Toki, but some parts sound like he was testing Toki to see how he would do with call and respond. And the last melodic part before Toki fucks up, was Skwisgaar enjoying himself before the final move.
Brendon is an amazing guitarist. I think he's one of the fastest and cleanest i've ever heard. I don't know of many times he fudges a note, he's a perfectionist when he plays.
I knew aleeady that Skwisgaar's guitar playing style is inspired by Yngwie Malmsteen, but this made me realize. That means BRENDON SMALL can play like fucking Yngwie. He wrote and played that shit!!!! This man will never fail to impress me. His passion and talent for music is unmatched.
This deserves a banana sticker.

I don’t think people realize just how GODLIKE brendon is. I mean he IS Skwisgar, and Toki!
DON'T PUT MARBLES IN YOUR NOSE put them in there DO NOT PUT THEM IN THERE!!
Tommy blancha voiced toki. Brendon recorded toki playing though.
I have the deepest respect for Brendon, he achieved so much by just being a passionate guy and a metal fan
I've been struggling for months to learn this... this guy fucking WROTE this...

It’s funny to me that some of the best true metal of the last 20 years came from an animator.
@@johansmallberries9874 I don't think he animated it, just storyboard and wrote it, as well as doing all the music excluding drums and base.

Nobody lays down staccato backing chords like Brendon 🤘
That 14th century baroque style in heavy metal was just amazing.
For someone who does a million other things and still plays guitar better than most people who only play guitar.....Awe!

Toki is just as good as Skiws, he's just *super lazy*

0:28-0:40 that is just my favorite sequence of the entire duel...other than the baroque style guitar playing, that was awesome as well.
Brendon I am obsessed with this song. I want to hear more like this, these melodies are amazing.
The Doomstar Requiem is so underated and also needs a Blu-ray release.
Now do "Some Time Ago"
