Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. I am almost 70 and use a cane . When I am struggling to carry groceries, I am ignored but when my youngest daughter that looks like a model is with me. We get doors opened for us and everyone wants to carry groceries. You are a sweet couple. God bless you .

I have a form of muscular dystrophy and when I go out with my wife to have a drink guys send drinks over to her almost every time. It saves me money so I don’t care. LOL

Yup that's the answer! When I worked in Switzerland as a carer for an adult with severe autism, I would get "respectfully" flirted with in public, but never ever catcalled. I would drop him off and get catcalled all the way home.

There’s something sweet, soothing and familiar about Shane’s voice. When he speaks, I get a sense of comfort and familiarity.. as someone with severe social anxiety, he seems like someone I could easily talk and joke around with him.

I love you guys so much. I can see so much genuine love between you and it inspires me so much in my own relationship.
I have struggled with my weight for years and feel disabled because of it for so many reasons. I’m 240 lbs and lose my breath going up the stairs, have sore knees constantly and just feel unattractive but I met a man who in my opinion is the sexiest man alive and could have any woman he wants yet he wants me! At first I thought it was just about my kindness, creativity and how I treated him which is important and yes he does love me for those reasons, just as I don’t just love him because of his looks, he loves me for more than my personality as well. He has struggled so hard to show me that he finds me sexy but I had a hard time believing him.
Watching your videos helped me see that true love is unexplainable. It’s something unique to each couple and those who can see beyond each other’s weaknesses whether physical, mental or emotional and see the true beauty within each other, are the ones who last forever.
My now fiance’s patents have been together about 50 years and his mom takes care of his dad and looks at him like Hannah does Shane. I think that is beautiful and want the same for me and my soulmate for the rest of our lives. Keep shining your light on the world. You are one of the fortunate couples who will last a lifetime ❤️

Some people see you together and they are struck by the strength/vulnerability of you guys- you strike their hearts 💕 They refrain from being immature. I am a retired highschool teacher. It helps. Some others, bullies aren't connected to their soft side. Those guys catcall or overtly hit on you when you are with Shane. It must be hard for you two, young and in love. I think flirting/catcalling is something that very much happens 'in the moment' and so when you guys are together there's probably more thought directed towards trying to figure out what you guys are to each other which takes up that moment.
Also, Shane, unfortunately it's just how it is when dating an attractive girl; guys are going to hit on them. Period. It really wouldn't matter if you were in a wheelchair or not. Sometimes it wont even matter if you're present or not. Its just the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.

I have a disability and my girlfriend doesnt as well. Once we were in the street and I fell behind to tie my shoelace, then I noticed three guys surrounding her. I went there and held her hand. One of them asked "ok how much is the cripple paying you, we can pay more". The others laughed and they walked away. That was the only time such thing happened. People are usually respectful when we are together, but not when they assume she is alone.

@Michelino Guarda we both have dealt with this sort of disrespect, her as a woman, me as a handicapped, for a long time. The skin grows thicker. But people have to be better than that. Dignity is essential.
