The same thing happened at Motown 25 when Michael was singing with the Jacksons. Michael was live at that point but the brothers were on playback. very strange.
This performance was live. For some reason in this video you’ve watched, there was alternate audio dubbed over Never Can Say Goodbye. It’s not the audio from the show. The show performance is INCREDIBLE and it’s here on CZcams. I’d recommend it.

On the actual footage it was live. But this playback that you watched someone synced the live recording to the footage. You would have to watch the actual footage to hear the real vocals.

People already know to go see the Jacksons Live on Tour Promotions. 🎵🎵🎵🎵 I would know, I have a relative who wrote a song for the Jacksons.

This track is prerecorded live. But it looks really good on film until you notice Johnny Jackson dropped his stick during the abc break down. It’s still very good though. -die hard fan
The old shows use a boom which is above their heads and out of view. If you notice when Marlon and Jackie were up front with Michael in Never Can Say Goodbye, you only heard Jermaine and Michael's voice because the other 2 were away from the boom. In the first video, you will notice a change in the music because the drummer lost his stick. No dub and both were definitely live.
I'm sure I remember hearing in an interview with Michael or the brothers that Michaels vocals would be live, along with the odd solo part by Jermaine, while the background vocals 9f all the brothers were played back..sometimes the instruments would be played live or they were playing, but not being picked up...the guitar and Bass wouldn't even be plugged in, so that was more obvious, but the raspiness that you hear in Michaels vice in some of these, is a sign that it's live...when it's a lot more pure and identical to the album...obviously they're just playing the official album release then. They also went thru a stage in the early yrs where they had trouble with Marlon not quite singing in key, throwing everyone off, so they would turn off his mic. So a bit of it could've stemmed from there a bit aswell.

They're playing along with playback. They recorded this medley for TV performances. It was released on a compilation album several years ago.
