Rediscovering a Lost 1800’s Gold Field!

  • Deep within the rugged valleys of Tasmania’s west coast , Lie the scenes of countless long forgotten gold rushes. Some of which, were nothing more than a short show, but others, others like the one we’ll be searching for today, were the start of a boom.
With the help of an old newspaper article I found from 1872 I’m off into the wilderness for an epic adventure to search for this location, which has been completely lost to time, along the way we’ll be able to relive some of the memories of the old timers, and discover the workplace of the these hardy men who called this place home over 150 year ago..

The big U-shaped frame you found is part of a horse-drawn slip scoop. A large shovel/scoop was mounted in the middle and dragged by a horse. When full of earth, it was flipper over to empty it by lifting the back end up , so the the front edge dug into the ground, flipping it over. That was how they would have cut the road in. Drag and tip, drag and tip. My dad used on up until the 80s to clean out dams, with a tractor instead of a horse.

Hi Rob, I e been following you for a while and I always am struck at how invested you are in your adventures. I, along with many others really appreciate ’being part’ of your Indiana Jones adventures into overgrown wet lands. Rob, I am a gold prospector. I’ve done really well. I was also in the Australian Army and part of that was being a forward scout. I found their are 2 ways of looking at ground. 1) what is their that I can see, 2) what I am not seeing. When I look at your footage of the old timers alluvial trenching I saw a few things, but what I didn’t see was the mullock or soil dug out of those trenches. This means it’s twice dug dirt. By this I mean that the dirt was dug out of the ground to make the trenches, but then removed and washed to check the ‘pay’ in the alluvium. I would love to see a good dowser put the rods over those places. I suspect the old timers dug where their rods told them to. Anyway, ‘Vote 1 Rob Parsons for Tasmania’ please keep up the excellent work.
