  • This week, I'm taking a look through the eye of the drone at Summersville, WV and Summersville Lake, the largest lake in West Virginia. The lake has 60 miles of shoreline with shear cliffs that cut through the mountains down to the waters edge.

When my grandparents were still alive , in the 80s and I was just a tiny little boy, they used to take me here for camping and fishing in their RV. I was raised in Oak Hill, but they would take me here for a few weeks during the summer times and let us camp out and go fishing and stuff

Summersville used to be smaller than Richwood, it;s neighboring town in Nicholas County. The shopping use to be Richwood for Webster and Nicholas residents. Now it's Summersville and the population is now over 3400 compared to Richwood with over 1600. Richwood is much more picturesque in it's downtown business district with the classic small town urban flavor. Summersville is more spread out as a suburban type of design compared to it's sister town. Summersville has room to continue to grow as it's well above the flood plain compared to Richwood being in a valley as Summersville is substantially higher in elevation.

Steve, those are cliffs of the Nuttall Sandstone like those at the New River Gorge Bridge not excavations and are perfectly natural. I am one of the geologists, who mapped all of the quads that the Park Service owned any property on prior to the gorge being declared a National Park and Preserve. Retired now I am beginning to work on drone footage for an article about a trail my 5 x great grandfather pioneered.

The population stays the same in Summersville. -Because everytime a baby's born, a guy leaves town.
