I discovered this with my VW passat 3.6 V6... Sometimes when I gave it gas it pulled but not crazy hard. With this kick down it was like twice the acceleration since it drops you down to the lowest gear possible.
This has nothing to do with a presumably "performance mode". This is simply a kickdown switch that forces the transmission to shift to the lowest gear allowed and is mainly used as an emergency downshift in case the transmission computer doesn't figure it out by itself how many gears to downshift in that particular moment, like when you're passing another car.
This has been a feature of Automatic Transmissions for as long as I remember. Back in the day of 3 speed autos, it was there. It would just force shift the transmission from 3rd to second. It's Kick Down and all it does is move the transmission to a lower gear when you put your foot down in order to get a little extra power. It changes none of the performance settings. It is exactly the same as shifting from 4th to 3rd gear in a manual. That's why the RPM jumps.
My 2018 Mazda 3 has it as well as a sports button around the shifter. I can notice more power. It doesn’t always step down the transmission. If it needs to it will shift down. It definitely revs higher and quicker. The Fact that it revs quicker means that the ignition timing is altered. My car doesn’t run well in 110Degrees Fahrenheit If I put 87 octane it usually runs better at this temperature and higher. But the sports button is rendered useless. So that means that the sports button also changes ignition timing. And if I press throttle all the way down past the click without the sports button on and I’m using 87 octane it’s kind of laggy. So it’s my professional opinion as a master tech that both the button at the end of the throttle pedal changes ignition timing as well as the power button near the shifter.
I’ve always driven Honda’s manuals, and when I bought a 2016.5 2.5 cx5 I read on mazdas247 form about the pedal button. I now look at this, Mazda’s vtec sorta hahah though it’s not a manual I do use the sport shifting mode where you shift up and down and sport mode button which I’m not sure if that does anything. While on six, and stomp on the pedal all the way down, it goes to third and I shift up every gear. Guess Mazda’s are sorta fun.
You went to a lot of trouble for that and its a well done video. This for automatic transmissions only. Standard on them all. Up here in Canada we also have manual gearboxes and, the USA they are known as an anti-theft device.
I have got the exact same year and color as your CX5 lol. I was wondering what that clicking sound was when I had it pinned. Thank you very much for answering that question. There are a handful of tuning upgrades for your year CX5… would you ever consider doing any of them? Tune? Exhaust? Intake?
YEP, got that in my 2019 MAZDAA CX 5 GT Reserve 2.5 L. turbo. BUT... putting only 100 octane gas in my tank is the REAL HP gain! However at US $8.00/gallon I don't do it often. I have easily spanked VW CCs, Arteons and Audi A3's with my CX 5 GT Reserve and 100 octane gas.
Yes but not in the way described. Both 2018 chevy cruze and equinox do not have this pedal kickdown. My 2018 Mazda 3 does and coupled with sport mode makes it quite impressive.
This is the passing gear, with a fancy button on the pedal, that's all...If your car has 185 HP, the "kickdown" does not add 15 HP all of a sudden...Porsche has a temporary overboost that effectively increases HP/TQ, buit it has turbos, and that's another subject.

Actually my 2018 has this. Not only does it kick down the transmission but it also revs higher. I think it might change the Ignition timing as well.

Whether Using the sports button or the throttle button the full power is 184 hp
Ever heard about expression “floor it” ?
Man this is kind of embarrassing dude.
I'm embarrassed that this video is exactly what I thought it would be.
It just kicks it into a lower gear!
It's the equivalent of you using your gear shifter and downshifting
Not true
yes
Push it all you want. If there's not enough rpm left. It will not downshift and make any difference.
i have one on my passat, just discovered it

Hello there, do you kick it in on the 1st gear?
that’s the idea
...it´s called Kickdown switch. Nothing special...

Don't do this when your Mazda is in sport mode it will break your neck
BMW has this too
Mazda CX-5 Optimum 2019: Got it.
You just discovered oem nos!! Omg
I have got the exact same year and color as your CX5 lol.

Nice. I am glad it helped. I have no use for tuning anything. As far as I am concerned its a waste of time and money on this car.
My 2020 Mazda3 has it, i thought it was some kind of reset button.
Thanks for the info👍
Good! Thanks.

I also have that on my 2015 Mazda 3 sport
I had this on my 2006 vauxhall astra automatic
Are you serious?! Almost every automatic car has this 😂😂😂
Yes but not in the way described. Both 2018 chevy cruze and equinox do not have this pedal kickdown. My 2018 Mazda 3 does and coupled with sport mode makes it quite impressive.
Your the nicest troll I've ever sein

I have this mode in my Kia Rio. Can I turn it off??

Just a regular kick-down.... nothing special, nothing secret...
It does have more power actually On top of the sports mode button
2009 mazda 6 mine doesn't have it :(
You can find this in manuals too.its an override for the speedlimiter in case of an emergency
You don't know anything about cars.
