Homegrown violence and a sense of impunity in America's urban war zones are leaving thousands of teenagers with severe psychological trauma that stunts their emotional and cognitive development. VICE News travels to the front line of this epidemic in Los Angeles with the kids who are suffering, and the adults trying to save them from being destined for the fringes of society.

I just had to sit through a 60 minute presentation on PTSD at school, and they didn't talk about anybody but military folk. When it came to questions, I asked why they didn't talk about kids that live in violent neighborhoods. They looked at me like they never considered the fact that they have PTSD, too. And they don't get money, benefits, and general respect like the military people do.

For starters we were stripped of our culture brought to a place that doesn't accept us a Americans even though we are born here. Being raped one time or watching someone be beat to death can traumatize anyone for life. Slave experienced this daily for hundred of years. Than after slavery there was Jim Crow. Were people in suits rich people lynched and tortured black people for entertainment ,made up crimes or just because they felt like it. No therapy was every given. We were just told to keep it moving. Make a life in a place where your not wanted not liked or viewed as equal. Some blacks actually did succeed and created communities that were wealthy(Black Wall street) but guess what that was destroyed too because of jealous whites. Learning my history was a traumatic event. Knowing that to this day Americans with brown skin still get killed and the killers get off free is traumatic. Knowing that my grandparent know and seen people , friends get lynched, beaten and killed. My Grand parents! As a disabled Gulf war Vet and I grew up in that area. To be able to live, I mean really live again. You have to talk about it. With PTSD, you are like a walking zombie. Where anger is the only emotion you can feel. Because if your not on guard, you can be dead in the next minute.

My psychiatrist diagnosed me with PTSD from living in violent areas when I was young. Then I joined the Army to escape the violence in the hood but Ran into more trauma and that made my earlier PTSD got worse.

I'm an identical twin, and after hearing that man speak about his twin dying I couldn't help but feel like I had to cry. No body deserves to lose a sibling, but twins are connected in a way only other twins can understand. He is a very strong man.

Ed Dawse Hello Ed, I read your comment and I hope you and any children you may have are undergoing colonoscopies. Colon cancer can run rampant through a family. My mother died at age 72 and my son died at age 41, both of colon cancer. I have had polyps removed every couple years since I was age forty. My Gastroenterologist said my grandchildren need to have colonoscopies beginning in their early twenties, even though insurance won't pay for it. Good luck to you and your family. Diane

+Ed Dawse Hi Ed, I sure hope your mom is having colonoscopies regularly. Since she and your aunt were twins, it would be very risky for her to put it off. My son died at 41, but he had been undergoing treatment for two years prior to his death -- making him 39 when it was discovered and then it was far too late. The polyps had obviously been growing for years. I can't even count the number of polyps I've had removed -- there have been so many. Fortunately, because they were caught early, they were not cancerous and I'm 77 now. You can talk with a Gastroenterologist and get his/her opinion. Just for my own peace of mind if I were you, I would have the colonoscopy done now and see if there are any polyps growing. There aren't any symptoms until it's too late unfortunately. I did a history of my maternal family to try and find where it began -- but this had been in Arkansas with no doctors, and people just died -- so I never did find out which side it came through. My paternal grandmother died of some ailment which may have been connected with her bowel, but it was never diagnosed either. My three grandchildren will have their first colonoscopies at age twenty, if I have to drag them to the doctor and pay for it all. It isn't an easy death.... My son refused pain pills until two weeks prior to his death so he could continue working, until he finally went into the hospital where he died. He was very conscientious about taking care of his family and it hurt me to see him suffer so much. Again, good luck to you and your family. Diane

I got PTSD. I grew up in a rough neighborhood in California. I'm 33 now and all I dream is gun fights and cops chasing me. I pray I get over it. Forgive me Lord for the choices I made.
They should've at least got a real person that has gone threw this and has overcame ptsd and overcame the struggle...the interviewer is from an upscale palace...that's doesn't make a good outlook for the realism of the documentary makes it flat more like news

Lost in this video is the fact that Los Angeles is one of the safest large cities in America currently. This is not the 1970s-90s Los Angeles anymore. Cities like Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Detroit, Atlanta, etc., have higher homicide rates.

Gang volence is dramatically down in L.A. 100 murders in one small section of the city in the past 7 years is a lot today. The problem there is the small section next to it did the same thing, and so on. There's a lot of small sections, connected to other small sections from east to west and north to south. From the city of L.A. to throughout the county of L.A. But times have changed. It is 2016. Modern day banging in L.A. started in the 60s, escalated in the 80s and topped out in the 90s and early 2000s. That's decades of continuous killings. The decrease is due to new technology, less illegal money on the streets, more parents focusing on keeping their kids out of trouble, smaller families, longer jail sentencing and gentrification throughout L.A. If you pull up the statistics from the 80s and 90s you would find that each summer brought more deaths than what's reported here. This violence L.A. was started when these kids grandparents, and great grandparents were kids and teenagers and still continues today over the same original beefs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. That's the disturbing part. I was born and raised in L.A. I hit my early teen years at the end of the 80s and began associating with the neighborhood at the beginning of the 90s. Life was much different then. It is only now that I am able to experience all that L.A. has to offer. As a youngster there were very few places I could visit. Set tripping was a 24/7 sport. It did not matter if you banged or not, if the neighborhood you were visiting had issues with the neighborhood you lived in, you had major issues. The rule back then was if you live in that neighborhood, then you were from that neighborhood. The OG's would say if you don't get put on the hood and strap up, then your gonna die in these streets for nothing. The type of car you drove, your age, the way you wore your clothes, your color choice, your walk, your talk, where you lived, being a punk, being too hard, being black or latino or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time would get you killed. When there was stripes to be earned, everybody was a target. That even continues today. I'm not comparing L.A. to Chicago or any other city in the world cause we are all losing. One death is too many. So there is nothing to brag about. To go through life not being able to grow up and visit the friends and family that you knew from childhood cause they are dead is not cool. Not even a little bit. Death is life, but this type of death is a choice and can be stopped.
Imagine how much safer this community would be without firearms.

The level of exaggeration by the reporter goes over board! This is the problem with media, where underprivileged communities are portrayed as the worse, when in reality these are the neighborhoods in which kids persevere the most! PEOPLE ARE COLOR BLIND BECAUSE OF THESE "documentaries!!"
As a student trying to help children at risk in my community, it infuriates me to see that such reporters degrade my community and other communities to that level, and make the rest of the nation believe what is not true! This is a true example leading to Disproportionate Minority Contact!

I grew up in East Baltimore and when you live in those types of neighborhoods you learn how to deal with it and as much as it sucks it becomes the norm

I've been fortunate enough to grow up in a safe neighborhood and I've never experienced gang violence first hand. I know people who have and it compares to nothing else. I am completely in awe at how young these people are when they are affected so deeply. No person should ever have to see someone die from gang violence

ah.. I live by this area too. See most of these streets when I go out on the weekends. My street isn't so bad though, primarily Hispanic and got a school nearby now which limits any violence around the area. There have been two deaths on the corner of my street though, used to walk by there everyday for two years when I went to my old school. Didn't even know until I saw the murder featured on America's most wanted and recognized the corner of my street. I didn't think my area was that bad, but then again, I don't ever dare go out at night, not even to my back yard (we have a pretty big house). Its eerily quiet at night, most you can hear is people arguing somewhere. Been living here 17 years though, gotten used to it. My parents still make it their goal to move out of this area though. Especially after someone robbed our house a couple years ago.

and I was robbed for my MJs, shoes that I had worked so hard for at the swampmeat for, and I was robbed for my Grocery coming from the boys market once, just before the riots I really feel for these kids and i hope they can make it out like I did and no I don't ever wanna go back and please don't speak on these kids because they go through a lot of hardship every day. 😤😢

I'm not from Los Angeles but I have family that lives there and I stay two hours away from Los Angeles in San Diego. I can say for the most part I dealt with some of the issues that the kids in this video deal with. San Diego isn't as bad as Los Angeles but we still have the same type of crimes over here. Witnessed my friends get shot, stabbed, in fights with the police and more. It's definitely traumatizing when you deal with it so much. Every day you have to worry about someone pulling the trigger on you or trying to fight you. It's a dangerous situation to be in. The sad part is I was a lucky one out of all my friends. I'm a high school graduate in college now. Some of the friends I grew up with are either locked up or dead.

I have ptsd from my military experiences and it is horrible always feeling unsafe even around friends for example my friends can no longer play attack me like jump on my back or stuff like that I feel a sense of being attacked and I do not mean to my instinct take over and I attack I feel uncomfortable with just walking in crowded areas I feel like a threat is there my mind starts looking at people rather than the beautiful area I see things differently it is awful I have a extremely hard time
