This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is best-selling American author Joyce Carol Oates, who has published over 40 novels, as well as a number of plays and novellas, and many volumes of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction.
She has won many awards for her writing, including the National Book Award for her novel them (1969), two O. Henry Awards, and the National Humanities Medal in 2010. Her novels "Black Water" (1992), "What I Lived For" (1994), and "Blonde" (2000) were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Her novel "We Were the Mulvaneys" was selected by Oprah's Book Club in 2001.
Following the unexpected death of her husband of 47 years, Oates penned an intimate memoir "A Widow's Story," describing her journey through near suicidal grieving. She is now happily remarried and is exploring new forms in her writing. She has taught Creative Writing at Princeton University since 1978.
Proficient in memoir, fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry, book reviews, and essays, Oates has also mastered new media and social media. Emily Dickinson, she feels, was the subtle precursor of "tweets," and Oates composes for Twitter as if she were writing aphorisms or lines of poetry. Many of this prolific author's tips for writing are explored in this interview, starting with Tips #1 and #10 -- "Write Your Heart Out!"
