Playing off-meta is such a psychological attack in tournament settings. Even with open team sheets the intimidation factor of bringing something most people consider bad or unusable to an in-person competitive event immediately throws a lot of people off their game.

its about the idea that loss, win, win, loss, win is better than loss, loss, win, win, win. Because the second loss in a row can really affect you on a mental level. Most importantly, it might make it less likely to actually GET those three consecutive wins (I ignore the fact that your standing is worse in that situation - I am thinking about the quality of play)
I love seeing Espathra, a Pokémon so busted in singles that it got banned to Ubers, being called “bad”. The differences between VGC and Singles as metagames is always interesting.
Because the new Pokemon in SV are not built for Smogon singles. Like don't.

@@noakinn For example, Chi Yu or Chien Pao have some risks in doubles because they hit YOUR Pokemon with their abilities too. But in a Single Battle, it's as good as a superior intimidate. Houndstone and Palafin also work nowhere near as well in 4v4 doubles than in 6v6 singles where they're unstoppable.

Im still a fan of competetive singles as it is, about as much as the VGC formats. Sure, people have to make rulesets around it, but it's fun within those rulesets
The biggest example of this I’ve seen is definitely Gliscor. I don’t play singles, but I’ve heard that it’s poison heal ability combined with toxic orb makes (or at least used to make) it a pretty solid mon, but in VGC, I can’t remember the last time it was usable
Tinkaton may not be the strongest Pokémon in the world… but the moment you let your guard down, she will make sure to treat you like another Corviknight

Offensively it’s just not good. It’s really really bad. However it has a good amount of support options and can function in a team being a real pain in the ass if played correctly. T Wave, stones, fake out, encore etc
Stinkaton isn't doing squat to Corviknight with 75 base attack. Corviknight's Body Press actually hits harder than anything Tink can do to it.
The fact that this video released at the same time as the Europe international is going on where seemingly every other game on stream has a team with a Gyarados can only mean Wolfey predicted where the meta would go using his patented World Champ Difference.

Also Gyarados is probably the best Ting-Lu answer and this tournament in the video didn't have the Ruinous pokemon yet
Gyarados and flying types are simply gonna rise in usage because of fissure ting lu
And since annihilape isn't that common anymore, you don't have to fear giving defiant boosts to it either. And since palafin is at an all time high in usage and often runs close combat, you don't need to worry about gambits much either
In the opening graphic Wolfey shows Gyarados has 58% usage rate, so yes, every other team. There's a big "except this one" pointing at it, you can't miss it

@@kahunamed647 99% sure they use the publicly available vods to recreate the fights, just to avoid nintendo doing their silly little nintendo content policy activities
@@mudboy5 The vods only showcase a couple of his battles no? Certainly not every one of every player’s rounds, unless there’s an archive for review purposes or something.
Edit: Yeah Wolfey just takes notes while playing, he says it later in the video. He’s included footage from when he’s onscreen in tournaments before
he mentioned taking notes on his battles during the tournament. i think he was just jotting down every move made by each mon, except when he needed to focus harder

I always love pokemon that are used differently in Singles and Doubles. Espathra is a Stored Power setup sweeper in Singles while it's a Lumina Crash support in Doubles.

There are now like 20 comments about 4:30, so to answer:
Gyarados isn't protected by psychic terrain as it is a flying type. Psychic terrain doesn't disable priority, it prevents grounded pokemon from being targeted by priority. Levitate, flying types, and air balloon will all prevent psychic terrain from protecting you.
Since he'd already tera'd his ceruledge, he could not tera out of his flying type to protect Gyarados.
Edit: actually gyara is tera flying, so it was always vulnerable.
What, wait I'm confused how does psychic terrain allow flying types to get attacked by priority. Flying types can't use priority moves in that terrain.
@@ramanahveljeyaseelan5406 it protects the grounded mons, it doesn't do anything to the attacker. A flying type using priority against another flying type would succeed.

@@ramanahveljeyaseelan5406 u seem to be confused; terrain effects do not affect flying mons expect move multipliers. Simple as that. You can status flying mons under misty terrain, sleep flying mons under electric terrain, they do not heal under grassy terrain and finally flying mons can be hit by priority.
@@ramanahveljeyaseelan5406 try to think terrains like this: its the pokemon that are affected by terrain, not the moves. If you stand on terrain (psychic terrain in this case) then you gain the terrains benefit (immunity to priority moves in this case). Flying type ISN'T STANDING in the terrain. Thus flying type doesn't get the protection a grounded pokemon STANDING IN THE TERRAIN would get. Its like... imagine the terrain be a shield. If a pokemon is behind the shield (stands in terrain) they are protected by moves the shield is supposed to cover. But if you hover over the shield then ofc it doesn't protect you.
Watching this a few months later seeing Flutter Mane, Gyrados and Ceruledge be considered bad is so bizarre

As someone that doesn’t play Pokémon but enjoys watching and learning competitive games, wolfed does a great job of fully explaining the reasoning behind his decisions

Wolfey should try a team where the core goal is to hit a defiant weakness policy kingambit with bulldoze.
I don't think you can proc your own defiant, I think your opponent has to drop the stat

Honestly, even without holding a champion title it's still really interesting to see the viabilities of other pokemon, especially when facing more common and uncommon matchups. We can't all have wins but you did amazingly with what you gave yourself anyways 💖 Great stuff Wolfey!

That was until back in 2022 when I stumbled upon your channel, though despite knowing a lot more about it I never thought it was something I’d be good enough to do.
You inspired me to dip my toes into competitive Pokémon, and while I’m not the best at it so far I think that I’ll get my footing in due time

Love the different between espathra in doubles and singles, in doubles it doesn't have alot of usage but in singles it's kinda like the main baton passer
Espathra was also just the setup sweeper, no need to pass anything the bird is very threatening by itself

I really like recreating the games for background footage, gotta be a lot of work both for you taking notes at the tournament and your editor/whoever is recreating them, but it makes it so much easier to follow/entertaining

Wolfe gives such a deep insight into competive Pokémon! As an outsider, I'm both fascinated and scared by the amount of skill and nerves it takes to play in these tournaments
Thinks like this make wolfey a top player he's always on the edge an tryies to improve his own abilities in the long run. He always has a methodical approach and still challenges himself constantly. That's an elit, peak performance mindset.

Tinkaton and Ceruledge are my favorite pokemon from this generation so its really cool to see them atleast get that far competitively.
I love these videos and appreciate the amount of work you put into them! One note is that I miss being able to see every matchup before the games start (like what 6 Pokemon the opposing player is bringing, mostly applicable to the first few games), but absolutely love love love these videos!

Ironically, espathra is considered an UBER, (too strong for OU, the standard competitive format) in singles. So it can only be played with pokemon like flutter mane, iron bundle, koraidon, and miraidon
You have to consider that single battles is more of a pokemon fan game. It's not real, it doesn't really count.

Between you and Tang, I've finally decided to dip my toes into the competitive pool.
Especially that last match at FW regionals with Tang and Ugarte. It was my first time at regionals, and the hype in the crowd was amazing, and imagining myself beating out the competition with an unorthodox team and making it into the top players just made me more excited to get into competitive.
I'm currently hunting and breeding for a shiny living dex, but I'm also looking for competitive viable pokemon at the same time. at the end of the day, I'm excited to debut into the competitive scene in 2024, and I can't wait to see the meta then compared to FW 2023.

I dont know why gyarados had such a low usage rate. Ive been using it since release and the variety of sets it can run and typing has made it a beast in my opinion
I think its just a case of where gyarados can do alot of things really well theres just alot more pokemon nowadays that can fill a specific role PERFECTLY, so the more generalist options become less popular even if theyre still quite strong. There are tankier tanks and faster/stronger sweepers, so in cases where you have to keep the same pokemon and movesets why run gyarados set when its versatility gets removed and you can just run something else that already is hyper specialized for the role you wanted the gyarados to fill?
Not saying i think gyarados is a bad pick or anything just trying to explain the thought process on why people in official tournament settings *tend* to be more inclined to use a pokemon thats seen as a S rank for its role vs one thats B or A rank in many roles
Though as wolfey demonstrates often and as youve seen for yourself theres no need to adhere to the meta to be successful and have fun, its just that alot of people also find hyper optimization fun as well and those are the type of people who are *usually* more competitive and go out of their way to be in tournaments so it just leads to most tournament participants trying to follow the meta as a correlated byproduct even if non-meta teams are sometimes harder to deal with because theyre less predictable
@JubioHDX I agree with this. I noticed myself while using it that despite how well it worked on my specific team I did think of other mons to fill its role better in one way but the versatility alone made it work. Of course that's with my team in mind where I'd have to replace two mons to cover everything it does for me
@@orchid685 don't worry gyaradoa now on top 12 on usage. It is really good counter to ting Lu and with t wave + waterfall you can lock out your opponent from moving. And it also got taunt so it stop spore as well.
This explains a lot I personally play Vgc on showdown and saw a lot of the gravity strategy on showdown and this explains it also great video congratulations and on 1 million too!!!!

This footage is a recreation for the video based off of his notes (so not 1 to 1). I'm presuming that in the actual game psychic terrain had worn off already
