    The ladies field was pretty good. The ice dance results were interesting. None of the pair events have had any depth so far except Skate Canada. Lubov and Charlie didn't skate so well here but the field was much easier to medal in. The men were all over the place. Chock and Bates look great. Kayne and O'Shea continue to regress in every aspect and they never score well internationally, for good reason. Sui and Han look great and Han continues to throw her higher and farther than a lot of the guys who are much taller than him. It's like they're from another planet.

    Does Alena, for long term, need a quad if she has a 3A in a short program (a slight boost), and 2 in the FS. With good spins, footwork, consistency, PCS, and 3As, she may be fine without quads. Especially if others with quads don't make it. Also, I think with You Young, I think she is probably fine. The olympics is years away and she is super young (and I don't feel the Eteri "you are best when you are young" technique). She has time to build consistency for 3A and maybe a quad by 2022.

    • @rop888
      @rop888 Před 4 lety +7

      She doesn't need one and she might not injure herself before 2022 by trying. She's slower to add tech than the other two Eteri even mentioned. Her score is not that much lower than Sasha's 4 quad programs. And You Young will be fine as well. She doesn't need be perfect right now. Eunsoo isn't really any competition for her and Korea has two worlds spots anyway.

      Alena has best artistry of the 3 Eteri girls and great height on her current jumps but even with her performance quality, the judges won’t give her the PCS score that she deserves until another year since this is her first senior year. Perhaps by Olympic year. But it will only get more competitive with the upcoming years with the new Eteri juniors coming up. The youngins are already doing quads, not just learning them as seniors and who knows when their growth spurts will come or injuries. Look what happened to Medvedeva and Zagitova. It seems 15 or 16 if the age to hit it in the Olympics.

      Evan Perilstein Why do you think they don’t go the safe route? I have been gathering statistics for many noticeable coach teams in Japan, Russia and USA, and Tutberidze’s group has less injures per number of students than many other teams. On one of the interviews, Eteri mentioned that they keep very close eye on their students to make sure they don’t try jumps when they are tired or lack concentration. So I don’t see any indication so far that the team doesn’t take safety very seriously.

      Norine Chang that is likely it. There was one point where Jonathan’s sound was such that I took my ear bud out to make sure it was only coming through my ear. Something was off but it wasn’t the same as when he is super loud. He has a tendency to play with his levels and mic position. And because he is an opera singer who gets excited, it is very different than if you or I were having a conversation.

    Some of the judging calls in the ladies' event were questionable, to say the least. It's not a clear edge on Shcherbakova's lutzes but it is clear outside take-off on Satoko's? Are they out of their minds? Satoko clearly goes on inside edge right before take-off because she lets her arms go too early.

    Highlight of Cup of China for me was the return (and return to the podium) of Han Yan. Nothing else came close. Not sure why so many people are knocking the men's event here. I was intrigued by the line-up of skaters and the fact that a number of medal contenders (like Jin and RIzzo) had already flopped their first GP assignments and hence had no chance to make the final but had the ability to spoil someone else's chance of making the final; which is exactly what happened with both Tanaka and Messing getting knocked out of contention. (For the record: Messing finished 4th at Skate America, not third - as Dave says here - so he needed a 1st or 2nd to have a legit shot. With two 4th place finishes, Messing has zero chance of making the finale now.) So I already expected the event to be topsy-turvy. What I didn't expect - and it was a marvelous surprise - was that Han Yan would win the SP and finish second after the FS. He has no other GP assignment so he won't have a shot at making the final but I don't care: I'm just thrilled that he did so well on his return to competition. Gorgeous skater/skating.

    I agree, I'm a bit skeptical on the current quad jumpers lasting till the next olympics. These girls will hit puberty and might have the old problems that arises with getting a more mature body and not to imagine the injuries.
    For now they are killing it though! 😮
    If they do plan to go with Trusova and Scherbakova,
    I wonder if they would tone it down (quads) and get it back near the olympics ? Maybe make them learn 3As for the meantime?
    As for Alena I feel that shes purposely phasing herself in preparation for maybe a long term goal? She has the 3A but shes taking her time learning the quads.

    Alena: I completely agree. I think of the three, she’s the one who’s got... the full package with technique that looks like it’ll have greater longevity. Trusova does have a strong body, but like you said, the risks are high for injury. They still have three more years, and that’s a long time, long enough for the body to start feeling the stress. Thus, I don’t like it when people start hyping these skaters when we don’t know what’ll happen yet. It’s also a mental game that won’t be helped by the pressure.

    Elizaveta: I’m glad you guys are optimistic with her. I thought, by now, you’d say that she should retire. However, I don’t think she’ll get that quad by nationals. Also, her biggest problem has always been the choreography and PCS. They’re... not addressing that, so until they do, her skating remains the same. I’ve always felt like she has more potential in her performances, but it’s the same strategy in a new playing field with new competitors so tactics need to change.

    This season is very interesting- in the ladies there are skaters really pushing things forward, and a lot of skaters actually moving things backward (have we ever seen so many combos with a double toe on the end?). There are the skaters stretching to reach the technical content of Eteri's girls, and then a surprisingly large group of ladies hanging onto lower level triple combos, with no other evolution in their skating skills, artistry, content, etc. By the end of this season going into the next, I think there will be a real shakedown in terms of who is still competitive.

    Shcherbakova is lovely, her face expression and her musicality are great. However, there’s something about the way she moves her arms and legs that seems so odd to me. Maybe, even more sloppy than Trusova, who’s already very sloppy with arms and legs. Maybe ballet classes could help, but I know they have lots of ballet classes at Sambo70. Eteri always seemed very perfectionist with these things with other skaters. Do you think this is not addressed during practices, or it is addressed and they (Anna and Sasha) simply don’t have the body consciousness needed for these changes yet?

    • @iris7484
      @iris7484 Před 4 lety +3

I think Sui needs to change her dress, though. If only to match Han's more. Scherbakova's win was expected; Miyahara getting the silver here was unexpected. Tuktamysheva with her 2 3As I had predicted for silver. I do like Miyahara's FP, though. Boyang winning the men's singles here was expected. However, he needs to bring his A-game if he's going to compete with Yuzuru and Nathan. Han Yan's comeback was WOW! That 3A...but like Jason Brown, needs to up his technical content if he's going to be competing against Jin, Hanyu and Chen. I felt bad for Young You, but I have a feeling she'll be at 4CC, and even Worlds. Mateo Rizzo did well, but not enough to get into the GPF; I do think he'll medal again at Euros. NHK should be for Sui and Han to win; all they need to do is get that Grand Prix Final title. Thanks for the recap! Rostelecom is going to be a blast!

    I saw on jackie wong’s twitter that sui and Han we’re still deciding if they’re going to keep the long program.

      Natalie Molina I love both their programs last year. And as Jonathan mentioned, it’s nice to see them again since we didn’t see them much as they were out half the year. But they need matching color costumes in the long imho.

      Same, I thought the costumes they used for the free last year suited them more. Hopefully they update their costumes by the Grand Prix final.
