- In the northwest of the island of Sardinia, Castelsardo towers high above the coast - a town straight out of a picture book. It embraces its visitors with all its charm, supported by old fortress walls and colorful houses. Castelsardo belongs to the association of the most beautiful places in Italy "I borghi più belli d'Italia"
Along the old city walls there are wonderful views of the sea and on a clear day you can see as far as the southern tip of Corsica. Also worth seeing is the Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, which was mainly built in the Gothic style, but was later subject to frequent renovations. Several centuries of art history can be seen here. The cathedral and the castle are in the immediate vicinity of the old town - all of which can be easily explored during a long walk. Other ecclesiastical buildings can be found in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie with the monastery of San Benedetto.
When the Genoese family of Doria founded the coastal town in 1102, they had strategic intentions: they wanted a well-fortified base in the Mediterranean to serve as a trading center and bulwark against the competing forces from Pisa. At that time, the area had long been inhabited - not least the nuraghi in the vicinity testify to this. The hill, which was difficult to conquer, was immediately fortified - the Castel Genovese was born, and with it a prosperous small town.
The 15th century brought a change - the north of Sardinia was conquered in the name of the Spanish crown - the Castel was immediately renamed Castel Aragonese. The most important innovation was the bishopric, which was moved in 1502 to the newly named Castel and its church. To this day, the bishopric in Via Vittorio Emanuele can be visited almost unchanged. The small Romanesque church of Sant'Antonio Abate was expanded into a bishop's church.
In 1769 the town finally came under the rule of the Savoyards, who also gave it its current name of Castelsardo.
The city has rightly been voted one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. I really could have strolled through the alleys of the old town for hours and taken photos of the doors and stairways. This place really enchanted me. If you have the opportunity to visit Castelsardo, you should definitely do it.
