Just wanted to say thank you for all the content you've put out over time and acknowledge the countless hours you've put into doing this. You're such an entertaining fellow to watch, and your great attitude is really enjoyable. This channel is easily in my top guitar-tube channels for both the usefulness and the atmosphere. Keep up the incredible work!
I appreciate that! It's been a really fun ride so far.
Your tutorials on anything Fractal is so inspiring. I’m learning as much as I can before pulling the trigger. Everything you do on your channel is worthy even if it’s just answering questions. Thanks for all you do!
You are so welcome! It's incredibly fun for me.
That thumbnail. I'm in love all over again
Hi Leon,
Love your channel. This episode’s segment on guitar CZcams was hysterical. Keep up the great work. You’re on my Mt Rushmore of guitar CZcams, along with Mike Nielsen, Pete Thorn & Tone Talk (with Dave Friedman.) A full dose of everything you mentioned: playing, tone, gear, GAS. Take care, Jim Golden
Much appreciated Jim!
Great episode! I have been a consumer of weird guitar youtube since the early days… 2008-ish maybe? (Pro Guitar Shop - RIP… i’ll never forget that little intro riff). I’ve been along for the ride on many channels over the years have honestly lost interest in most of them in the last few. But your channel is still on my near-daily check-in list of fun stuff to watch. You’re always engaging, informative, appreciative of the audience and most importantly… “real”. You’re a cool dude Mr Todd and we appreciate you!
I appreciate your appreciation! i can hear the PGS riff now :D
@Leon Todd I have put the Celestion F12- X200 in a traditional closed back 2x12 (Seismic Cab) and they sound great and they do take on the character of the IRs you use with them although they do also have some of their own character that always come through like a traditional speaker. Having speakers in a traditional birch(wood) cabinet makes a huge difference since most FRFR's are built with other materials. Really great for a modeler of course especially when you want to change IRs from a clean patch to dirty patch. I'm very happy with mine. You should give them a try since you use the AXE FX. Cheers.
this video is amazing
when i was younger my life was guitar. every free moment guitar, guitar, guitar. life happened and that time got lesser and lesser. now i am an evening or weekend guitar warrior with a nice collection and a nice axe fx iii (i bought it because of your videos).
*It would be great if you would reBLOG those 2013-2014 America Tours, behind the scene, how too's; the actual business behind the scene of the tour, booking it, prepping for it, doing it ETC... Like (x3) 1.5 hour shows part 1-3. Studio, interviews, backlog interviews all of it; that would be really cool!*
There's a little bit of stuff out on the band YT channel as well as some retrospective stuff I've put up on the channel. All that was before I was doing the YT thing so there's not a massive amount of footage unfortunately.
@@LeonTodd *Sounds like an excuse to do another American Tour and Vlog the whole thing, so you then can have to footage. But in the mean time, it would be even cooler IF you did your normal show from the road, while on that tour. Lots of pawnshops and music stores here, lots of goodies to get a hold of - a hell of a lot of interesting content! then use all the aforementioned road footage from Tour development, negotiation, prep, and the ups and downs of being out there [ or over here/ persay ] in all the travels... Sort of a "HOW TO DEFINITIVELY" BOOK AND GO ON AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERT TOUR....This could be really heavy and even it done right, strategically organized and promoted - hell you could spin off a book, that also features various PROFESSIONALS subject matters... **#HEAVY**! Then as a plus, "Build the BANDS BRAND and get your guys on a larger platform for the near future.* There is absolutely no one on earth doing anything that! The content, the endeavor, clever, extremely unique and taking what already exist and doing it in a very different way - whereas to spin off a multiplex of revenue stream and cross collateralization.
The only thing I dislike about guitar (gear) youtube is that there is not enough of it. I wondered if "the market" is over saturated but I find myself looking for more stuff to watch way more often than not knowing what to watch first. We need more and more different guitar gear content
More voices and perspectives can only improve things. Your channel is a GREAT example.
@@LeonTodd Mate, I appreciate that a lot
Hey Leon, how do you set up solo sounds vs rhythm sounds for live? Do you jump the overall level (how much dB) and add the delay and stuff? Or do you play with other things like boost pedal (emulation), amp settings, choruses etc to thickening the sound and add more mids? Or other way around, do you set the rhythm sounds more scooped because of space for vocals for example?
I think this is one of your best videos just plain talking and on point about all of it. I love how you put it about how players of any level are all equally valid. Every point you make is something I agree with STRONGLY. CZcams personality driven, the lessons guys turning into fitness "just do this ONE thing to change your playing forever" hype day-in/day-out. Right on point.
Thanks mate! Hope life is treating you well :)
Celestion, fR12-X 200 is quite specific to the cab that Celestion recommends for it to get the full response. I’ve read reviews where people put them in guitar cabinets and they don’t sound very good. I have it in a cabinet that’s super close to specs and it sounds amazing.
If you haven't done one already, I imagine your viewership might enjoy a Five Minute video about John Sykes' cascade harmonics.
Definitrely pick it back up if you've had to stop.
I had a stroke 3 years ago (partial temporary paralysis on my left side) that took out my abiliity to play for a while.
I had been playing on and off for the last 50 years and had just nailed YYZ with leads literally hours before the stroke, the first leads I've ever really nailed. I am a rythm guitarist for the most part.
I find that a break always helped and this one I had to focus hard on fingering and picking technique to even be able to play again and as of today it's done wonders for my playing.
I had always been pretty good at rythm guitar and had been playing Satch, Nuno and Vai's rythm's for decades but the leads were beyond my bad habits. No more, I taught myself Pornograffiti front to back last month and it was easy to deal with using good technique.
Use the return from break to focus on the fundamentals like hand position, finger and fretboard and picking (economy picking was never a thing for me until this year) and you'll actually improve when you get it all back again. Probably be doing things you weren't able to before even.
Just do it.
I had to jump to the Geartube section. It's very interesting, because I stream once a week to none to one people and yesterday I had my first questions on the livechat. It really is fun talking about gear, but for me it's irrelevant if it is new gear. I love just talking about gear and the strange sounds I can get. That's why I love your videos where you are talking about old rack gear (Michael Nielsen as well). The thumbnails are a strange thing, of course. Yours are good.
Variety is the spice of life after all.
Those hair tips tho! 😅
Question for next week: You love a greasy lead sound, and who doesn’t? So how much of that grease do you dial in live vs studio and what are the greasy challenges you’ve faced in both scenarios.
what is your experience with IEM rigs and setups? do you use iems live or the venue monitor speakers and what do you think about using iems in rehearsals? my band recently switched to a "silent" rehearsal room (only the drumkit can be heard outside) and i'm curious if you have any info on that method. personally i think it's made a tremendously huge improvement in performance and hearing every detail of everyones playing and especially with stereo mixes
Cool video, sir!
One thing about pinch harmonics - I find it somewhat harder to get proper pinch harmonics on longer-scale guitars (same string gauge). For example, my old and trusty RG2620 QMSP just screams, while RGD2127 FX needs more effort to produce a clean, screaming pinch harmonic.
I wonder if that's because the shorter scale makes the room for error lower? That would be interesting to test
@@LeonTodd Hmm, might be, yes. Then it should be even easier on Les Paul type of guitars.
My first PRS was a new 1996 Custom 24 with a "regular" neck profile, tremolo, etc. It was really nice, but I was never able to bond with it. In 1998 I bought a new McCarty Model , sight/unplayed, from an online retailer about 400 miles from where I live. I had visited this retailer in person a few months earlier and sort of knew the salesperson I was dealing with and took his word and him playing it over the phone that it was a really, nice guitar. When it arrived, I couldn't believe how nice it really was. From the bigger neck profile and unique big leaf maple top, to the McCarty pickups to its raw and ringing tone...it was fantastic. I still have it and it has only gotten better with age. I've owned 3 other PRS guitars since then, none of which I still have, but the 1998 McCarty is a keeper.
I have been using the Boss GX100 for a year now. I decided I needed to upgrade. I live 30 minutes from Sweetwater, so I have been through several pieces of gear in the last few months. After trying the Friedman irx, Quad Cortex, and eventide h90, I have settled on the Eventide H90 and the Boss GX100. The GX100 sounds great. The Eventide does everything the Boss doesn't do well.
Good choice!
I could live without another CZcams video with a click bait headline like body wood or pickups don't matter at all. Also channels that don't know the specs of what they are reviewing or demoing are frustrating. I appreciate the work you do to get all of that right.
If you could buy a 6 string guitar right now for drop c tuning from any music store what guiitar would you get.
Rediscovering Guitar! thank you! I literally just did it (25 years later)
That's awesome!
I sent Zilla the reference cab design for the F12-X200, and they did a beautiful job with it. I use a couple of those with my unpowered Kemper and a Matrix GT1000FX and it makes lots of tasty sounds :)
Very cool! I'd love to get a Zilla cab one day, love their work.
Pretty certain, that deep within the fathoms of this excellent Monday (cough) content, @Leon Todd released a tutorial Kraken. Centurions, ever see an equal excellent pinch harmonic tutorial, ever?
Might have to cut that up and release it as a standalone vid!
You and Cordy do the Fractal real well. You seem to know the in's and out's of using that complex system, and cover a Whole spectrum from classic 70's sounds, 80's esp. and beyond. Nice DEMO's. I actually like what Eric J calls PING harmonic, he called it that on his Total Electric guitar Video 1989. Sqealies, started with B. Gibbons.
What a great video that is too!
@@LeonTodd I was stunned in the early 90's when i saw it, to me Eric was the Bridge between the great fusion players and us Rock players, he was a bridge of understanding so to speak. Not as advanced as Allan Holdsworth. I still think Eric J is the best overall Strat player of all time, with the 3 single coils. He knows how to tame the Stratocaster BARKY sound.
This particular video is on point for me, since I a.) recently got back into playing seriously after a ten-year break, and b.) it's because I discovered Guitar CZcams! You, Euge Valovirta, and Bernth have given me so much knowledge and inspiration in the last few months-all for free. I only wish this world had existed back when I was touring in my 20s, I would have been way better! (Especially at handling my Boogie Mark IV...)
Solid dudes! That's awesome, and I'm glad you're enjoying playing again :)
I’ve been forced into a long break from guitar and I really appreciate what you had to say. Thank you.
I appreciate that mate, it'll still be there whenever you're ready to get back into it!
@@LeonTodd I’ve started again brother. Had a neck injury that’s kept me away for nearly 2 years. I’m working through it. Thanks again. Your an inspiration!
Hey Leon, I am just a bedroom player and looking to get a basic home studio setup. I normally jam to a full size cd/mp3 player amp and speaker setup. Are active studio monitors going to satisfy for jamming to music? I've no experience, and concerned about the "flatness" spoken about monitors, like KRK RP8s. Cheers man!
Is Bias FX 2 still a good choice? I like the looks of their tone cloud. Is there another product with a better tone cloud?
Love the old school Hamer pickup config on the McCarty (double cream and zebra).
YT guitar: Yes, thumbnails are cringe. Most "reviews" are simply overviews. There's too much of companies sending stuff to 100 people at once rather than staggering it. Also, get tired of being told I'm doing everything wrong in the thumbnails.
Not saying it's not work to do videos of course, but sometimes, some of the folks act like their lives are so tough because they get gear sent to them and they make videos about it.
EDIT: To be clear, yo avoid most of these (thumbnails excepted, but that's the state of things).
do you use the mf10's for practicing at home or the adam ax7's
Mostly the Adams
15:44 genetics…damn GENETICS!!!
Leon! Isn't it springtime now in Australia? You should try something different this year. Cut your hair off and go with a buzz cut this summer. It does grow back. If you have been a long hair your entire life guy, why not change it up? Like a lot of guys, you will be pleased to find you are still cool and can play guitar like an ace. And short hair helps your vibrato a little.
Thanks for the content! I can do pinch harmonics by accident, I will try to learn to do them on purpose.
I might go with two eyebrows for a change this summer :p
I'm gonna need a hug now
I used to have a beautiful 10 top PRS McCarthy but it suffered from the opposite of neck dive. Sitting down with it in the 'rock' position (not the classical position) was impossible. I would constantly slide of, with the neck tilting upwards. That may also be a function of the placement of the cutaway that you place on your leg. Anyway: the McCarthy intonation is sort of fixed (esp. the older models). Do you feel that this limits string gauges / tunings that it's suitable for? I've never really noticed drawbacks but then: I'm a little tone deaf and why is it not more common to have fixed intonation on electrics?
You can always get the official bridge with adjustable intonation.
@@lordgraga 'always' wasn't always an option ;) This is decades ago when after market parts weren't one mouse click away.
Today I learned that my noodling after work is just as good as anything Alan Holdsworth has ever done 😊
I spy a LT Signature Guitar in the background 🙂
😁
That PRS with the Suhr pickup is your best sounding guitar and the harmonics sound like Black Label Society 13 Years or Grief. Sick 🔥🤘🏼
Crazy good isn't it!
@@LeonTodd well it’s no Dead Daisy ! 😂
#timepoint 2:50 *GREAT ADVICE!....*
I did lots of pub gigs in the 90’s and can confirm that the cigarette smoke was awful.
Your clothes and hair would stink .
I remember putting some foam filters on the fans of my poweramp to stop dust getting sucked into the amp , took them off for a clean a few months later….. no dust , but yellow from nicotine 🤢🤮🤮
Tone is in the durries!
Question for next week- do you give your guitars (subconscious) name's? Like myself, my green Strat reminds me of a Spidey villain...so I call her "goblin"😂
man it looks so easy when you just killing the pinched harmonics :)
Hey Leon.
This is a great q and a.
Funny about the stuff available and what is the one thing that will make you fit. My buddy / best friend / school mate is into all natural stuff, and I tease him all the time. I told him, dude, I figured out what the perfect all natural supplement is. Remember, it's all natural. Whale sperm. It will make you feel like superman! Also, you might try poisonous rattle snake venom. 😛 Being silly of course, but it's because I get tired of hearing about the all natural one thing that will make you feel like a new man. 😛
That Surh aldrich does sound killer man! It kinda reminds me of the JB duncan, but maybe with more output just hearing it..
Long hair.. Wow.. I almost have mine to my waist.. 😛 I have to get it cut. It's driving me crazy.. I use Nexus stuff, which is kinda a expensive, but it kills static in the winter which drives me crazy with so much hair! Nexus is the best for that and smells great..
Thank you for what you do sir.. You're hard work is our reward too because we get to hear you and garner knowledge and fun.. So we win big time as well!
Be well brother!
Tim
Love the no bullshit.
Once per week? Say it ain’t so!! 😮
16:45 tell me you toured the southern states without telling me you toured the southern states…they allow indoor smoking.
Greasy hair is a prereq for really greasy tone.
"Both" was 100% the right answer. It's probably always the right answer since you never really know which guitar will speak to you.
Lucky you with washing your hair once a week. I have to wash mine 2-3 times a week, otherwise it's a total mess...
Yeah it takes a while to get on a longer cycle
Thumbnails are the worst!
Definitely the least enjoyable part of the upload process
Okay, I'm really sick of all the damn PRS worship on CZcams.
I love your videos, but I hate your hair. I hate your hair because you still have it, and I don’t. Had to cut it off at 27 when genetics caught up with me. When you chain smoke with waist length hair…you just don’t notice. Of course, I don’t do that anymore either. Ah…middle age.
