Per Songfacts Despite what the title implies, this is not a song about a couple in love. According to Gary Bonner, who wrote the song with Alan Gordon, the song is about unrequited love. Our desperate singer wants the girl to "imagine how the world could be so very fine," proposing what would happen "if I should call you up." The line in the fadeout, "How is the weather?" is when he realizes they will never be more than passing acquaintances, as he resorts to small talk to keep from bursting into tears.

Most people only remember The Turtles for this song, but they had a bunch of great albums. Flo and Eddie, the main two guys, joined Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for a few years after The Turtles broke up. They then embarked on a successful career as a duo and were also two of the most in demand backup singers and appeared on countless hit records. Hilarious guys too, pretty much everything they did was tongue in cheek, they never took themselves too seriously despite their huge talent.

I've heard the song my entire life and I never get tired of it for some reason. It's just such a nice triumphant song. And I think it works that way because the verses are in a minor key, almost like it's going to be sad, but then it's triumphant when it gets to the chorus and it's just so catchy.

"Elenore" is a super tune and contains perhaps the greatest lyric in rock & roll history: "Elenore, gee, I think you're swell, And you really do me well, You're my pride and joy, et cetera"
Mark Volman and Howard Kaylen later re-emerged as studio musicians and worked as the duo "Flo & Eddie", notably doing vocal work for Frank Zappa.

Depending on whose chart you're looking at, this was the #1, #2, or #3 song of 1967. In any case, it ws a huge #1 hit on the weekly top 40. One of my personal favorites from this era. The Turtles are rarely discussed as one of the great groups of the '60s, but they were. And they were an American group in an era that was dominated by groups that were part of the British Invasion. This was, by far, their biggest hit. But they had several other really good ones. Like... "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Baby," "It Ain't Me Babe," "Eleanore," and "You Showed Me."

This song has been in quite a few movies in the years since its release. To give you an idea of how much this songs has secured its place in music history (from Wikipedia): "Due to its subsequent popularity, in 1999, BMI named "Happy Together", with approximately five million performances on American radio, the 44th most-performed song in the United States of the 20th century,[6] placing it in the same league as "Yesterday" by the Beatles and "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel. And, in 2007, it was inducted on the Grammy Hall of Fame.[7]" Wikipedia is missing some from their list of this song's appearances in other media, probably due to it being different versions or something. You mentioned Shrek. It was also in Earnest Goes To Camp (1987), which was when I first heard it as a kid.

Another great Turtles song you need to check out is "Elenore", which to my knowledge, is the only rock song to contain the words et cetera.

Brad, "Dance to the Music" is another great '60s hit from Sly & the Family Stone. Y'all may have done some of their music, but they have a big catalog of fun dance music from the '60s.

Saw the Florescent Leech & Eddie in concert - who were the lead singer & the guy in orange top. Sounded great. They warmed up for Alice Cooper - go figure.

I always thought movie -producers thought they could get away with putting in an old, but already written, song the kids would not know, as it was brand new to them. (The parent's might be "in on the joke", if they were watching at all.) They did the same with the voices of kid's cartoon characters--often based on actors who weren't even alive!
