  • I found a great deal on fresh cranberries. To preserve them I decided to dry them. This is my attempt at making home made sweetened dried cranberries, just like the Ocean Spray Craisins but with less added sugar.
    I found several methods online but in the end I decided to do the cooked method. The directions I loosely followed can be found here healthylivinghowto.com/1/post/... There are directions on how to dry cranberries in the oven if you don't have a dehydrator.
    I love my Nesco SnackMaster food dehydrator. If you are interested in other snacks you can make in your dehydrator check out

    I'm so glad I found this video. I tried making crainsins before but didn't boil them first and I had dry and gross cranberries that I should have just made into powder. thank you for sharing

    Hi, I did not read all the comments, however you should always, ALWAYS soak your foods in Citric Acid bath before dehydrating. I did not think that I needed to with some zucchini chips that I made in August and ended up with stomach virus, the one that gave me diarrhea. I read my dehydrating book and it says cranberries need 1 TBS per gallon of bath water so I used 2 TBS to be safe.

    It turns out that cranberries only have one gram of sugar per 1/4 oz. That means that well over 20 grams of sugar are added per quarter ounce to most dried cranberries sold in stores.

      This is the comment am looking for. My face all over suddenly started to break out. I thought it was the meds I had just started taking or bone broth, stopped taking them both but still, then I thought hrm, could it be the oatmeal banana bread I just made around the same time that has Craisins. Sure enough, I just checked the ingredients and BOOM! SUGAR!!!

      @@venusdemilo3378 at the receiving station we get the cranberries straight off the truck after they are harvested. I work in the lab where we grade the cranberries by size,, colour, firmness and sweetness. The quality is determined by the results we get in the lab.on those cranberries ,

    Have you ever made dehydrated + sweetened tangerines or mangos? What are the steps? I would love to get some help on this? Thanks for the great video. Andrea

    • @KatieCooksandCrafts
      @KatieCooksandCrafts  Před 6 lety

      I've never done those but I would love to do mangos next time they go on sale. I wouldn't know where to begin with tangerine. I've had commercially dried tangerine and it wasn't my favorite.

    Hey what did you do with the liquid ? If I do this could I possibly drink it as "cranberry juice "?

    • @KatieCooksandCrafts
      @KatieCooksandCrafts  Před 7 lety +3

      I poured it onto fruit leather trays and dehydrated it. It was thick, probably not pleasant to drink. It made nice fruit leather.

      +Allie Hunter They turn out just like craisins but less sweet (by design). They are dry and chewy in the end.

      yeah, I watch every year and I haven't seen a bargain like that since. I guess they got smart and stock less so they don't have to sell at such a low price after thanksgiving. If I see them below $0.50 I will buy them aaaaalllllllll!
