They're fairly pointless, but the way Disney makes money off of them when people collect them also applies to actual US coins and currency. That's why the US Mint makes things like series of dollar coins with all the Presidents on them, or the 50 state quarters. If somebody just collects them instead of spending them, that's revenue for the government, equal to the difference between the face value and the cost of production (that's called seigniorage).
Last time I was in America (2013) I collected the 50 state quarters! I guess you’re right, they do all add up to quite a bit of money.
No one reads pass the 2nd or 3rd line just so you know
Funny story:
A family friend used Disney Dollars as a way to get cash advancements from her Credit Cards without having to pay the fee. Basically you would buy X amount of Disney Dollars, but then you could trade them in for cash. The Credit Card companies treated it like a normal purchase, so no fees.
Also people used to do the same kind of thing, but with currency exchanges. Usually banks charge you to switch money from one currency to another. But you could use American dollars to buy Disney dollars, then go to the Disney bank and transfer it to another countries currency for no charge.
thats fantastic
Borrowing money on a credit card is stupid. If she was that broke going to disneyland was another dumb decision.
Just go to the atm at your bank?....
Walt should be on the $100 and Roy on the $50!
I'd get those Disney dollars for sure!
And Oswald the Lucky Rabbit on the $2
Thomas K96 If they made that, I would steal all of them. OSWALD IS LIFE!!!
I want a Figment one and a Boba Fett one.
It's like harry potter money in the island of adventures.
Anyone else thinking of the scene in Itchy&Scratchy land where they buy a load of I&S Money, and as soon as they get in the park, there's signs everywhere saying "No I&S Money" lol
Peter Richardson 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 thats funnyyy!! Lol
To bad they discontinued the Disney dollar may 14th! So disappointed!! Nice video!
Thanks! Yeah it's a bummer that they are no more.
Why did they stop?
I thought they had discontinued them. However this was a nice retrospective.
Wait what? No more Disney dollar? I had just found out about them
That sucks!
Once my family and I were walking down main street, and it was my sisters birthday so she was wearing a birthday badge. A cast member came up to us and gave us all $50 disney dollars because it was my sisters birthday!! It was sooo cool :)
I miss Disney Dollars being sold at the Disney Store 😞 Definitely need to pick some up the next time I'm in the park. I didn't realize you could order them, so thanks for the tip!
My whole heart! My home town got a shout out! There's not a lot of things to be proud of for BC but this is SO cool. I want the Tinkerbell bill. I think these are technically useless but are still a lot of fun. And it's kind of cool Disney cared enough to make it so much like real curancy.
Rob
Keep up the great videos. Yours are some of the best out there. Very informative, good subject matter, and not too long.
My grandparents used to give me Disney dollars to use on several of our Disneyland vacations when I was a little girl in the 90's
3:42 you can also buy them if you are booking a holiday to Disney world through Thompson airways or Virgin Atlantic
They were usable at Disney cruise lines, Disney stores, and the overseas parks as well.
The first Official Disneyana Convention was in 1992. Disney Dollars started in 1987. If the idea came at a Disneyana Convention, it would have been at the NATIONAL FANTASY FAN CLUB (NFFC) convention. These started in 1985.
I have literally been to Disney over a 100 times but I’ve never heard of a Disney dollar before. This is so cool
Discontinued I think
I have a FRAMED tinker bell Disney dollar that came with original Disney artwork and a small film strip of tinker bell.
My wife and I used to buy Disney Dollars a little at a time throughout the year at the Disney Store (when they were sold there) then when we went on vacation we took our saved up Disney Dollars as souvenir money. We had a lot of fun saving them and dreaming of what we’d spend it on. I wish we would have saved some of it.
Didn't they also sell Disney Dollars in the Disney stores in various malls too? I could have sworn they did.
Sammich yes
It pretty much was like a Gift Certificate. I myself thought of them as Gift Certificates.
Disney Dollars were so cool!
Jordan Berfanger Are* They're still made!
They are no longer available for purchase now
probably on amazon or ebay or something
You know, it would be interesting if they added a Disney Dollar feature on the Magic Bands. I mean, I know if you are staying at the resorts it would charge things to your room, but what if you wanted to just give your kids like $500 on their magic band to spend during the vacation rather than letting them charge a bunch of stuff to the room bill? Or for Annual pass holders to be able to keep a Disney Balance and add to their magic band when they visit the park.
I got an envelope full of Disney Dollars in my stocking for Christmas in 2003 when I was 6 years old. That's how my mom told me we were going to Disney for my 7th birthday the next month C: I think that's also how she limited my spending money for the park, cause I used them to buy my souvenirs
To anyone just finding this video, Disney Dollars are no longer produced. They halted production in May of 2014. They are collectible and usually not less than $20 even for the bad looking stuff. You can find them all over EBay. Good luck getting some if you want them.
I work in Disney, I'll actually look into this :D
I actually started collecting Disney dollars at my local Disney store, and for many years I would buy a bunch of bills for Christmas, but when the Disney Store was sold to The Childrens place They stopped selling them. But when my wife and I went to WDW in 2013 we took some bills with us and spent a bunch of them, the Disney fans LOVED them!!! Especially the older ones!!!
I have a $1.00 note with Dumbo on one side and Disneyland 50th anniversary/Sleeping Beauty castle on the other. I love it!
I gotta know what you did before this, your content is and has always been on another level
How did I not know this was a thing???
It reminded me of the scene in the Simpsons when Homer buys Itchy and Scratchy money only to find they couldn't be used as a play on Disney.
Even as a kid I thought they were useless. My grandparents gave me some and I thought "I'd rather have real money." I guess I sound pretty spoiled, right?
I didn't know they were still in existence, though, because, even though I've been to the parks fairly recently, I haven't seen any DDs since I was a kid.
My parents used to buy these and give them to my brothers and I as an allowance to spend in the parks
Idea for your next top 3, top 3 special effects at Disney parks. Examples are things like the car splitting in half in lights motors action, or the projections on Indiana jones. ( not limited to one park)
Disney dollars are brilliant. Collectable nostalgia items which are also functional. Watching this vid made me order a 1990's Disney dollar from Ebay because I remember Dad getting me as a kid and I want to be hit right in the nostalgia feels!
I remember a friend giving me Disney Dollars and trying to Use it in Universal Studios at Orlando. young me thought they were all in the same park.
My mom bought some at the Disney Stores long time ago when they used to give away lithographs with their VHS presales.
I cannot express how disappointed I am that you didn't refer to your $10 bill as a "Simba Sawbuck"
i used to have disneydollars! 😭 i used to get it for my birthday and buy things at the disney store..i miss them
I have 2, 1987 1 dollar bills and 1 1988 Dollar bill. I personally bought at Disneyland Anaheim. Also have a 60 year anniversary jacket. Gorgeous . Going on the market this week due to medical bills...DAMN
I always spend my disney dollars!!!! Great video rob!
Wow very cool rob i think the next time we go to disney i should use a disney Dollar there so cool
There is a bit of an error in your video. These are gift certificates. Disney can't report the money spent for these as a sale aka revenue until you "spend" them. They are on the books as a liability and the money has to be held in escrow. So it's not really profitable to Disney if you collect them. I guess they get a bit of interest but they can't use the money for anything.
It's reason places like Wal-Mart have major ad campaigns to get you to use your gift cards after Xmas so they can report that money as sales.
It will really improve cash flow as by buying dollars, Disney get paid in advance of sales. So will reduce the amount of money Disney have tied up in stock. Clever. This will be a bigger benefit than any money made from non spent dollars.
Eisner should be on a million dollar bill because he wasted millions on EuroDisney 😂
Disney dollars are beautiful. I mean if you think about it its buying a piece of art for $1 or $5 or $10. I have some from the 100 years celebration, some from Disney land that we got from WDW, and many others that are in perfect condition. They are absolutely beautiful.
So kinda like gift cards... Also I really love these videos and learning about Disney. I even dragged my family through that Disney museum in Disney world and I need a Simba bill. Lastly they should put Tod and Copper from fox and the hound or Genie and Aladdin on a bill.
Keem these are gift certificates. The precursor to gift cards.
There's a Disney Chase Visa that allows you to earn Disney Dollars still. No bills though, when you redeem the dollars they send a debit card.
I have some old Disney Dollars I think they are either late 80s or early 90s ones.
I totally had Disney dollars back in the day. memories
Jack sparrow on a 10 dollar bill
I would actually like to see a sub-series based on characters from "The Disney Afternoon". Observe...
$1: Scrooge McDuck(January-May)/Max Goof(June-August)/Goliath(September-December)
$5: Bonkers D. Bobcat(January-April)/Darkwing Duck(May-July)/Gadget Hackwrench(August-November)/Marsupilami(December)
$10: Winnie the Pooh(January-June)/Thumper(July-August)/Doug Funnie(September-December)
$20: Ariel(January-March)/Zummi Gummi(April-May)/Hercules(June-July)/Baloo(August-December)
$25: Iago(January)/Wildwing Flashblade(February-May)/Br'er Rabbit(June-September)/Launchpad McQuack(October-December)
$50: Cadpig(January-February)/Roger Rabbit(March-August)/Ludwig Von Drake(September-October)/Pith Possum(November)/Timon(December)
Just to be sure, I also included shows from the "Disney-Kellogg's Alliance" and those that didn't make it in America, yet were available in other countries. Some characters ARE repeated, yet they have their design from whatever series the block included.
There is actually an interesting means of advertisement and goods/service exchange.
I want a Shrek dollar.
Just kidding, I would like to see Wreck-It-Ralph or Doug from Up on a dollar.
Josh’s CZcams SOME
Do they offer discounts if you use their scrip.
Note: Scrip is the word to describe something that a company or another organization issues to be used in the place of money, it was common in internment camps and company mining towns for wages to be paid in scrip as a way of forcing people to stay in the town , or making their money useless if they tried to escape from the internment camp.
My family would always get some when we would go to Disneyland, so we probably have over $100 in various bill amounts/characters. It's too bad we never got even an unofficial answer as to why they discontinued them.
In 1988 I worked for a candy company and I went door to door selling candy. the company twice a year would take us to Disney world . after Disney started selling Disney dollars the company would hand those out as a bonus for top sellers on candy crews instead of real money like they used to. In 5 months I earned about 300.00 dollars worth of them. Next trip to Disney with the company "they paid for all the kids to go" I didn't have to spend any of my money on me , I paid for everything with them. I even paid for my 2 brothers food and drinks for the day. I wish I would of kept a few... maybe one day they might be worth something lol but still to have 300.00 to blow at Disney in 88 made you feel like a rich kid lol
How come I never heard of this until now?
You learn something new every day
I used to buy them at the Disney Store in the mall
This is such a great idea
Yep. I knew that. I really want the splash mountain dollar :)
Dave Chappelle had a good joke about Disney Dollars
In 88 the DD was not accepted in the gift shops. Hopefully that has been changed
Jay J that explains the joke in the Simpsons "Itchy & Scratchy Land" episode.
Did you know : Disney Dollar's can be used at Tokyo DisneySea!
great video 👍🏼
When I was a kid in the 90's I loved these things, I bugged the crap out of my parents to get them (granted I was like 8)
How can you stand being such a big Disney fan and not living in Orlando? Doesn't it drive you nuts? Lol.
I manage. I actually think sometimes that being far away enough from the parks is what keeps my enjoyment of them going. I sometimes wonder if I'd get bored with them if they were within reach on a regular basis.
In a way my inability to go all the time is why I started reading about the history of the company and parks so much.
Rob Plays absence makes the heart grow fonder I see.
I have a Mickey Dollar from the 80's.
Well it's money that's made just for the park... And it works just like regular money, but it's, er..."fun".
An obi One keno-bill would be reeeeally nice
I have the birthday Disney Dollar it has Mickey with a party hat on and he is holding a cake and Pluto is next to but without a party hat on. I have two!
Black Panther one that would be worth 100$ because it's the best Disney movie of all time.
Article 1, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states that only the Federal government has the ability to manufacture money. I don't know how Disney was able to issue their own currency for so long?
transtremm it's not money, it's a gift certificate.
Belle and the Beast on separate bills.
I don't know about wdw, but Disneyland doesn't sell them anymore. but we will always take them. just like a gift card.
RIP Disney dollars!!
This is a good for parents to give the children money in a way were they have to spend it in the parks and not keep and use it somewhere else.
that's pretty much what my parents did! and once you spent it all that's it. no more. great to teach budgeting and biting what you really want!
+IvyWinter *buying!
so basically a gift cash.
I have one with dumbo on it anyone know what year it's from
I don't know if it's true anymore...but you used to be able to purchase Disney Dollars at the Disney Stores.
littlesongbird1 they discontinued them last year i think
Just sayin, I want attractions on the bills. Like the space mountain one you showed. I want a rock 'n' roller coaster 10, tower of terror ones, etc.
That would be really cool!
This would be perfect for money laundering
Jan T that's why in the end they put restrictions on how many you could buy in each transaction
This was made just months before they ended it
unfortunately they discontinued them as of 2015 or 2016.
Get ready for Disney's new currency release... crypto currency! Pure profit!
please cover Millennium Village =) and Ice Station Cool
They should seel credit cards in Epcot with figment on it
Do they still have them at Walt Disney world? One day at Disneyland I saw a lady a club 33 member get two thousand dollars worth at Disneyland city hall. I was like is she crazy. I guess not what an investment. because a month later they were discontinued😩 Smart lady.
they should make a $999 bill for the Haunted Mansion
Disney has its (similar) crypto currency
I never knew about this
don't hold the bill like that. get a plastic currency holder for it
Yah they don't sell them anymore, they still take them, but the only way to get them is on ebay/ resellers,
i swear i was given a Disney dollar around 10 years ago but now i cant find it all of a sudden... now im mad :/
Disney only makes the best
How do u get them?
Itchy and Scratchy Money
It's like real money, but worse.
They should make one with woody
I want Darth Vader to be on a a Disney Dollar :D
And one of them is a Cinderella one dollar bill for Disneyland 50
