    They're fairly pointless, but the way Disney makes money off of them when people collect them also applies to actual US coins and currency. That's why the US Mint makes things like series of dollar coins with all the Presidents on them, or the 50 state quarters. If somebody just collects them instead of spending them, that's revenue for the government, equal to the difference between the face value and the cost of production (that's called seigniorage).

      Last time I was in America (2013) I collected the 50 state quarters! I guess you’re right, they do all add up to quite a bit of money.

    Funny story:
    A family friend used Disney Dollars as a way to get cash advancements from her Credit Cards without having to pay the fee. Basically you would buy X amount of Disney Dollars, but then you could trade them in for cash. The Credit Card companies treated it like a normal purchase, so no fees.
    Also people used to do the same kind of thing, but with currency exchanges. Usually banks charge you to switch money from one currency to another. But you could use American dollars to buy Disney dollars, then go to the Disney bank and transfer it to another countries currency for no charge.

    You know, it would be interesting if they added a Disney Dollar feature on the Magic Bands. I mean, I know if you are staying at the resorts it would charge things to your room, but what if you wanted to just give your kids like $500 on their magic band to spend during the vacation rather than letting them charge a bunch of stuff to the room bill? Or for Annual pass holders to be able to keep a Disney Balance and add to their magic band when they visit the park.

    There is a bit of an error in your video. These are gift certificates. Disney can't report the money spent for these as a sale aka revenue until you "spend" them. They are on the books as a liability and the money has to be held in escrow. So it's not really profitable to Disney if you collect them. I guess they get a bit of interest but they can't use the money for anything.
    It's reason places like Wal-Mart have major ad campaigns to get you to use your gift cards after Xmas so they can report that money as sales.

  • @jonathanthorpe3037
    @jonathanthorpe3037 Před 6 lety

    It will really improve cash flow as by buying dollars, Disney get paid in advance of sales. So will reduce the amount of money Disney have tied up in stock. Clever. This will be a bigger benefit than any money made from non spent dollars.

    Note: Scrip is the word to describe something that a company or another organization issues to be used in the place of money, it was common in internment camps and company mining towns for wages to be paid in scrip as a way of forcing people to stay in the town , or making their money useless if they tried to escape from the internment camp.

    In 1988 I worked for a candy company and I went door to door selling candy. the company twice a year would take us to Disney world . after Disney started selling Disney dollars the company would hand those out as a bonus for top sellers on candy crews instead of real money like they used to. In 5 months I earned about 300.00 dollars worth of them. Next trip to Disney with the company "they paid for all the kids to go" I didn't have to spend any of my money on me , I paid for everything with them. I even paid for my 2 brothers food and drinks for the day. I wish I would of kept a few... maybe one day they might be worth something lol but still to have 300.00 to blow at Disney in 88 made you feel like a rich kid lol
