Nice simple solution. There's always room for some small adjustments but I appreciate you sharing the things you did to overcome your challenges with this project.

I recommend you get a good jigsaw which should help with future projects where you need to make sheet metal cuts, also a quick tip when cutting 90° corners on L profiles, always cut the corners tighter! Make some tests on scrap L profiles until you get a perfect 90° cut and fold.
All in all great little project❤!

This is Awesome! Use a Heat Gun, or a Hair-Dryer to get the Vynil to Pull Taut
I have a few nice Laptops that I have ready to do a Project like this.
I was thinking a laser-cut wood case, where I could easily tap a few motherboard mounts. Not sure what it would cost to have a friend do that with their desktop project cutter.
    3D Printing looks incredibly wasteful

Random question, but wouldn't this also work if the original display still worked? (I'm assuming you'd have to build a separate frame for it) The components came from a case that was heavily damaged, but everything still works, so I took all the components out and threw the broken case away

Yes ! Still work just fine too :)

I have a laptop with an old gen i5 with a broken hinge and imadequate ram (4gb) but other than that all parts are in running condition. I would love to do this transformation with it

Great work! I wanted to convert my old dell inspiron 5548. It's got original display onboard but i wanted to use the motherboard in a much smaller box as mini desktop pc. Unfortunately whatever I tried, I couldn't manage to boot without its main display disconnected to motherboard. I set every bios configuration but still does not boot without original display connected. I will punch the display eventually :D

I think that some models require the display connected to boot… Try maybe the flat cable instead of the all display to see if works…

@@fabiofontes I tried flat cable, as soon as I remove the other end from screen, pc stoıp booting. Actually I found schematics of the motherboard after I commented. In the schematic, I can see the pinout of the eDP connector for screen. There is a pin called Hot Plug Detect (HPD) that I may use to trick the motherboard. Maybe I can pull the pin down to ground for making motherboard think that screen connected. I'll give it a try when I am able to get my hands on tools and available.

try bios update but , do it one by one with always do default settings b4 next flash from the old first to one to the end of latest one might work.
edit by the way try search in forums 3d party bios or ask someone trusted in there to edits your bios for adding the the display you got there

@@supernoob2542 i didn't know this was an option. I'd look into bios modification. Thank you👌🏻
