  • Using a 34" scale bass neck with a blank headstock ordered from Carvin, this video goes through the process of designing and shaping a template for in-line tuning machines and then routing out the shape of the headstock in a step by step format.
While the work being done in the video is for a Bass (a 4 string with in-line tuning machines), many of the concepts can be transferred over for designing a Guitar headstock with inline tuning machines as well.
This is my first video and after reviewing it I've identified some errors along the way but nothing so bad as to lead someone else to screw up if they were to follow the steps outlined in the video.
All things being equal though, there are different approaches to how this task could be completed. This is the one I chose for this project. I'm already planning to replace this video the next time I do an in-line tuning design but for now this would get the average do-it-yourselfer through.

I’ve been playing for years and decided to build my first bass. I got on eBay and ordered all the things I had always wanted on a guitar. I opted for a paddle head neck as well because I didn’t want fret markers but didn’t really realize until a few days after what I had really gotten myself in to. I have woodworking experience, but nothing like this. Sure, I could buy a template, but where’s the fun in that? The tuning peg alignment with the reminder to take string gauges in to consideration was exactly what I was looking for. This whole step by step guide I can guarantee just saved me a shit ton of time and money. Thank you.

Well Brian that went all around the sun to be to the moon didn't it? You could have marked out that head stock and had it routed and 4 holes done and finished in an hour for a first rate job! Thanks!
