I liked when the Lone Ranger waved off the pizza rolls but Tonto grabs a couple of handfuls and stuffs them into his pocket. Very funny. it's interesting to see two of your childhood heroes spoofing themselves.
No, it is an actual commercial. It was done by Stan Freberg. It is a parody of the Lark cigarettes commercial that used the William Tell Overture and a pick-up truck with a sign in the bed saying "Show us your Lark pack", here ending with a confrontation between a cigarette smoker, portrayed by Barney Phillips (supposedly representing the Lark commercial's announcer) and Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger over the use of the music.
Thank you WARP228, for pointing out that was Barney Phillips. The voice was so familiar, but I couldn't pin it down. Barney was the perfect "every man".
There was another great spoof commercial in the late 60s for Volvo. They hired John Cameron Swayze who was famous for doing the Timex watch ads. Those were the ads in which Swayze would narrate...”we strapped a Timex watch to the propeller of this boat” or some other outlandish test and then show that the watch survived and still ran...”Takes a licking and keeps on ticking”. The Volvo ad was...”we strapped John Cameron Swayze” to this Volvo...” , then they buckle him into the passenger seat of a car which which is then driven on an auto cross circuit.
@@virgin2point0 I found a collection of vintage auto commercials. I just added them to my youtube channel. The video link is czcams.com/video/MczIsYRNvBc/video.html The FIRST commercial is for Volvo. It is the "John Cameron Swayze" commercial you mentioned.
@@randallkoch6183 Barney Phillips! I thought I recognized his voice. He made a couple TWILIGHT ZONE appearances, probably most famously as the Venusian diner cook who reveals his 3rd eye at the end of the show to a Martian played by future Grandpa Kanisky, John Hoyt.
I recognize actor Barney Phillips, "I'd like to talk to you about that music you're using." I saw that guy alot on TV in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the 3 eyed Venusian in the Twilight Zone episode, "Will the real Martian please stand up?"
The commercial, as has been mentioned, was made by the great Stan Freberg. I remember Freberg appeared on The Tonight Show shortly after the commercial began running, Carson asked him about how it was made. Freberg, if I remember correctly, said he went to see Moore at his house in California. He related that Moore was not only still alive, but looked in the same shape he was in when he made the Lone Ranger series. Freberg said, "He's just the same, with muscles of rippling steel."
The man with the cigarette is Barney Phillips who did radio and was on the three eyed cook on the Twilight Zone. When they created the Lone Ranger radio show they used classical music as it in the public domain and fees to pay.
Per Wikipedia: "Jay Silverheels spoofed his Tonto character in a famous Stan Freberg Jeno's Pizza Rolls TV commercial opposite Clayton Moore." LIghten up, people. It's funny. William Tell Overture. Lone Ranger refusing the Pizza Rolls. Tonto deciding, now wait a minute, maybe I'll have some after all. "I'd like to thank that masked man," It's funny. I laughed. You should, too.
I agree with "Scott Free". I grew up with the original show and I still watch it occasionally at 10 a.m. on COZI TV. Of course, probably the best LR spoof was when Jay Silverheels appeared in that iconic skit on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson playing Tonto who was seeking new employment with Johnny as the job counselor.
The Lone Ranger is messing with Barney Phillips, who played the three-eyed alien in the diner on an episode of the Twilight Zone. "Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up?"
It's as much a comment on the music as anything else. When the Lone Ranger was created there was no money for music so they looked for something in the "public domain". Hence the use of Rossini for free. Lark cigarettes followed the same philosophy and Stan Frieberg skewered everyone the same way.
I had forgotten about this great TV ad. If Clayton Moore were alive today, I'd like to think that he would be politically active in fighting to oppose the "Stand Your Ground" laws in Florida and other states. BTW, the actor that the LR is putting his hand on his shoulder is the classic character actor Barney Phillips who was in Twelve O'clock High and performed in the classic Twilight Zone episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?"
When I saw this commercial the first time "back in the day" I literally fell off the sofa laughing. Good times.
I honestly rate this as the best commercial ever.
You and me both...............
Love it ❤

Stan Freberg was one helluva comedic mind. I remember a skit he did called "Elderly Man River."

It's surprising that William Tell did not show up in this--it IS part of the William Tell Overture.
The man with the cigarette is Barney Phillips who did radio and was on the three eyed cook on the Twilight Zone. When they created the Lone Ranger radio show they used classical music as it in the public domain and fees to pay.
(i)n the public domain and, therefore, no fees to pay.

I told you to eat before we came here, Tonto.
I’d like to talk about that music you’re using
Is that The Mighty Criswell at 0:07 ?
I CANNOT find any information that says it is.
Maybe The Lone Ranger was on a strict diet which is why he didn't want any Pizza Rolls!
when did this commercial air?
I saw this commercial when it first came out in 1968.
