- In this episode of Front Row Rugby award-winning sports journalist Peter Stemmet interviews Springbok Rugby legend and 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Andre Joubert. Andre and Peter discuss a memorable career that included winning the Rugby World Cup, coming up against Jonah Lomu, becoming a rugby professional, losing to the All Blacks in 1996, bouncing back to beat France in France, losing to the 1997 British and Irish Lions and the end of his Springbok career possibly caused by a disagreement with Nick Mallett. Joubert also takes credit for giving Percy Montgomery his first Test try!

André had that rare touch which brought a rare, unique and distinct flair to the Springbok colours and jersey,
nearly like his own brand within the reverred Bok environment.
And only a true master could pull that off.
No wonder to this day,

I grew up in Ireland (before moving to England) and I remember there was enormous pride in being the country that sent Joubert his glove. It was a new development in hurling (Irish stick type game) as several players were picking up innocuous injuries from being hit on the back of the hand challenging for high balls. I even remember the guy who sent it saying "It'll protect him from all general knocks and scrapes. But, if the French pack trod all over his hand, maybe not"!
That's a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing. So glad that the Irish could have a hand (excuse the pun) in South Africa winning the 1995 Rugby World Cup!

I take from each one I have watched so far and try watch games that the paleyrs and you refer to from those golden early re-introduction to international rugby days. I realise they faced many challenges but still produced good rugby. They are role models in my opinion for the hard work and tenacity they put in mainly off the field. Cullen was incredible. So fast and dangerous. The All Blacks did well to give him space and he just did the rest.

When I think of Andre Joubert, I just think 'class and composure'. He had everything you want in a fullback. The interview brought back a lot of good memories, especially of the 95 wc. Thanks. Keep it up.

As a kiwi kid, he always looked calm and steady. He had a prodigious boot, he was positonaly always good and his timing into the backline was great. He was definitely a great fullback in that late 90s era of world rugby

I`m sure if the current Bok team could have Andre Joubert, he would be snapped up in a nanosecond. I was fortunate to watch plenty live rugby in Durban those days, he was immense. What a serious game face but what a menace to try defend against. Only Willie Le Roux has come close to his quick thinking and execution under pressure, but Willie can not match his power. What a player. Thanks for the wonderful OFS, Sharks and Springbok memories Mr Joubert. Man if only Gerber, Du Plessis and Nass were a few yrs later, Imagine ....
There's not much more I can add to that! Andre is undoubtedly one of our greatest players and a true national hero. Is there anyone around who doesn't love him? Except of course international opponents!
Agree with you that Andre really was the complete package. A very special player indeed.
Just thinking about what you said on Gerber, Du Plessis, Naas, Andre ... this country of ours just keeps the great players coming hey! It's like a conveyor belt.
@@frontrowrugby I am Rhodesian born and raised, I was a ball boy at Hartsfield in Bulawayo. Rhodesia was a province playing in the Currie cup those days, I loved to watch all the touring SA provinces and became a lifetime supporter of the Boks.
Living in the UK now i have watched many Bok games live at the Millennium stadium in Cardiff. Hehee get this, on 5th Nov I will be at the Wales v AB`s game, I have never seen the AB`s live and what the hell the Boks aren't in Cardiff this year, plus my daughter is shacked up with a Welsh dude so it`s a great visit, apart from the fact he supports Cardiff and we were there a couple of weeks ago when the Lions fucked them up. Cardiff fans are really bad losers.
@@itsmeagain8604 That's incredible! My grandparents actually live in Bulawayo. I went there in 1994 and again in 1997/98 but not been back since.
Outstanding that you've got to see the Boks at the Millennium Stadium. I bet it's a wonderful atmosphere. It's something I've not yet been able to experience. Tried last year but with all the Covid restrictions it was more of a hassle than it should have been.

@@frontrowrugby Thanks for your comments. The Millennium Stadium is amazing, the Welsh anthem is so powerful and with roof closed is a magical thing. We watched the Joburg Lions next door at the historical Cardiff Arms Park, we all remember the great Bill Maclaren describing players as "18 stone under thundering hoof" so I was really pleased to be there match day and soak up the memories. Imagine a Bulawayo boy listening to him on the radio commentating at the Arms Park in the 70`s, a wonderful rugby dream, I guess it`s similar to the old Lansdowne road in Ireland and Murrayfield, two places i am yet to visit but bring a real great mystical vibe to the game we love.
Anyhow this is about the superb Andre Joubert, I could have watched another hundred games of his and never got bored.
Edit to add. they can keep Twickenham, 1 team I hate to watch is the poms.
@@itsmeagain8604 You've certainly had an opportunity to visit and experience so many wonderful things in this great sport! For various reasons I am yet to enjoy a Bok Test outside of South Africa. So these are all bucket list items for me. Hopefully there will be opportunities in the future for me to do so.
And yes, could easily have watched 100 more games featuring the great Jouba and never grown tired. What a player!
Mrs Joubert was my registration teacher at Hillcrest High School. I remember when Andre played his first match for Natal. Awesome memories.

He is a gentleman and a legend.My claim to fame is that in 1995 at the pre season fitness for Durban Quins we ran around the golf course.I was leading and the coaches were sitting on the stands waiting with their stopwatch,100m before the end Jouba came past me with a speed beating me.I just shook my head.Across all sport the great players have 1 thing in common,I have never seen him rushed he always created time.

I remember Andre well, as the consummate gentlemen. Ended up playing golf w him at Clovelly. Post game I apologised for leaving early, and he enquired why? My late Pa was in hospital. Grabbing a serviette , he wrote + signed a get well note. Juba, the most gifted fullback of his era, and always an example to younger men.

What great memories from different times ..Andre Joubert, Hugh Reece-Edwards, Cabous van der Westhuizen, Tony Watson, John Plumtree, Marc Edwards, Wahl Bartman, Joel Stransky, Robert du Preez and so on 😃🦈🦈🇿🇦
That was a great Natal/Sharks era as well. Many special players. It's no surprise they did so well for province, franchise and country!

We thought we were so good and in reality our game was stale in the world of rugby. Took us 20 years to catch up
@@mvubu6823 I'm working hard on getting a lot of those 1992 Springboks on to the show. Already had Naas, Wahl Bartmann, Pieter Muller, Johann Styger and Adriaan Richter.
Keep an eye out. In two weeks I've got Ian Macdonald and he shares a story about something Kitch Christie told him on his death bed.
In terms of 1992 he actually told me, "We didn't have a clue!"

You just mentioned the two players that I would have in my all time Springbok team from the years 1970 to 2005.
One of the best fullbacks to ever play the game...Will never forget the day he signed my Super Springbok rugby ball when I was an 14 year old laaitie...I still have that ball..
That's brilliant! What a special moment. I think the first players to sign anything for me themselves were Keith Andrews and Percy Montgomery! I asked Percy if I could have his shirt!

If the Springboks are willing and able to lace the drinks of their own coaches with drugs I suspect there might be something to the World Cup Final food poisoning story. Absolutely stunning revelation here. And the candor of it...
It's a fact that the All Blacks were food poisoned. It's also a fact that it happened earlier in the week.
Food poisoning is something you recover from in 24 hours and the All Blacks were back in training before the World Cup final.
Also it's more likely the hotel manager, waitress or someone at SA Rugby was behind the food poisoning than the actual Springboks.

What a great guy. Played golf with Juba couple of times during our military training in 1988. This lefty can punish a golf ball similar to a rugby ball.

I remember watching it at my parents' house and had some friends over. We painted our faces that day too! Couldn't believe what we were seeing in terms of the conditions. Glad you got to go. I was just a boy and desperately wanted an adult to take me to a game but alas!
@@frontrowrugby In my first job, living in Durbs. That match was insane! As a Natalian I am biased to Juba, but I think when he was on form, Percy may have been better. But either way, Juba is legend.
That's wonderful! I am jealous you got to go. By the time the Cricket World Cup came along in 03 I was working and managed to buy myself a ticket to go to a game at least.
Gosh, how do we compare Juba and Percy? I think Monty was more reliable as a goal kicker after Jake brought him back. But they both had great pace and flair. Very difficult to say.

I think what sets these great backline players apart, is that they are always 'there'. Danie Gerber is in my my view, the greatest centre SA ever produced. He was always 'there'.

@@frontrowrugby great man..some key points..his debut for the Lions against Small..Lions under Laurie Mains..his debut super rugby season with his much hyped try when he ran over Tanivula..thus coining him the SA Lomu in 01. His debut for the Boks later that season..and his eventual knee injury. Just some topics that you can flesh out some more.
@@jldp24 I can tell you're a big fan! I'll see if I can get him on. My aim is to get every Bok on here eventually! There's one guy I've been trying to get for nearly six months! So far only three have said no! I won't mention names.

Dificult to explain how special Kitch Christie was - he had very little time to "build" a team, yet he managed to win a world cup, and he had a 100% win ratio
A brilliant coach who had the right strategy at the right time. I think he fast-tracked the process by selecting the bulk of his Transvaal players. There were 13 of them in the 26-man RWC squad in 1995. He then filled in the gaps with Jouba, James, Mark Andrews etc. No one can say it didn't work!

maybe the legendary rolls royce is starting to lose his memory, I'm quiet sure he didn't play under harry viljoen, but he did play under carel du plessis in 1997, and I think it was said he turned down nick mallet at the end of 1997 for the end of year tour, but anyway I personally rate him the best springbok fullback of all time, not taking anything away from percy and willie, but the rolls royce was simply the best 15 in the world whenever he wore the bok jersey, legend.
Haha, yes I think sometimes the mist of time can do that. So you're quite right he didn't play under Harry for the Boks, but Viljoen did have stint at the Sharks/Natal in 1993 so Juba would have interacted with him there.
He played for the Boks in 1997 under Carel but didn't go on the end-of-year tour under Mallett.
So difficult to compare greats like Juba with Monty and Willie. I often say it's best to just enjoy them while we can and when we can.

@@TheBokkeableHarry was also unlucky. Lost the Currie Cup final in 1992 against Natal ... and then lost the following year with Natal! Glad he got his Currie Cup with Province in the end in 1997.
I can't remember if Harry was still with Natal in 1994 though.

Andre Joubert...Probably the worst player ever to put on the Springbok jersey.
I am sure this comment is just to try and get some response. I was in the army with Juba and it irritated me because he was just brilliant at every sport including cricket and golf. To top it all he was also a very nice guy and still sounds like a good bloke.

I played against him in Singapore in the sevens when he was playing for Durban harlequins, I was playing for Happy Valley. His first five meter speed was unreal, I got a finger on him, that was it. He loved he Vuarnet sunnies.

@@frontrowrugby our next match was against either Kaitake or Takapuna, I forget which, but their number seven was Cullen……….all the gas! In the scrum they had Eric Rush. We got killed.

Rush was a great player ... particularly in the Sevens arena.
And Cullen was a genuine master. Incredibly skillful with devastating pace. Whenever he had the ball he was dangerous.

I won't lie to you, I have very limited knowledge on KZN club rugby. I'm not familiar with Rudi Koch. I did though check the archives I have access to and the only Bok Koch I could find is Vincent Koch.
