- Great Smoky Mountains Railroad: #1702 Nantahala Gorge 7-6-2024.
Independence Day weekend, 2024. We are back in the hills of the Great Smoky Mountains to see our favorite Baldwin S160 type steam locomotive. Former USATC #1702. It's only fitting that we celebrate our Independence by seeing a true veteran of World War II. 1702 powered the railroad's ever popular Nantahala Gorge excursion, and as per usual she put on quite a show. Leading on the return trip is GSMR's newest diesel locomotive: EMD F9a #4210.
1702 has many changes that occurred during the off season:
- The smokebox is now a consistent dark grey color.
- The white trim on the locomotive and tender is now black.
- 1702 has two new plates on the tender, and she is now officially a war veteran.
- 1702's drivers have received new tires.
- 1702 has a temporary flag on the front for Independence Day.
- 1702 has a new whistle yet again (shop built Southern 6 chime)
Enjoy our look at a true veteran in the Nantahala Gorge!
Back to her 2022 appearance, with exception of the white trim. Was hoping they’d keep the white on the front of the smoke box. It reminded me of her appearance in the late 90s/early2000s. Wish the number on the cab was a bit larger and that they’d put GSMR back on the dome. The whistle sounds very similar to the shop built 6 chime that the crew made last year. Nice to see 4210 again. Hopefully she’ll get repainted one of these days. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

I’m glad that the F unit is finally operational and a great awesome whistle on the 1702
Finally operational? She was operational the day she arrived last fall. In fact, she made her official debut on Polar Express trains last November.
@@clemsonpirate7144 very awesome if I am correct on the paint scheme this F unit last worked for the Erie Mining company which was a modern railroad to utilize EMD F series locomotives
Love that new 6 chime on 1702! I genuinely thought it was the IC 6 when I first heard it!
That 6 chime sounds very similar to the one she wore back in the 90s.
Indeed, 02's originally recognized as a veteran who's done just about everything and has gone everywhere
May God bless all the active service and veterans!
The six chime is beautiful and the great Smokey is one of the little trains In world
Awesome chase glad to see the F7 out and running

@@Cwilliam1999 they opened it to have air circulation
When will GSMR restore more passenger cars for a longer 33 car train??
@@nicholasmedovich8691 That’d too long for either train
@@stevensainerailfanproductionseven if 1702 and 722 would doublehead??
@@nicholasmedovich8691 GSMR has the equipment, but the most I’ve seen GSMR pull on either train is 25 cars
@@stevensainerailfanproductions that doesn’t surprise me.
