Where would you rank "Kelly's Heroes" among your favourite war films?
Only seen a small number of war films. Without ranking, my favorites include "M*A*S*H", "Dr. Strangelove", "Sahara" (Humphrey Bogart version), "Stalag 17", "Patton", "Dirty Dozen", "Good Morning Viet Nam" and of course "Kelly's Heroes". A lot of people tell me "The Great Escape" is good, but I've never watched that movie. Great reaction, BTW.
@@thequietrevolution3404 Great Escape is a must watch in my opinion, phenomenal cast! McQueen, Bronson, Attenborough, Coburn etc. Kelly's Heroes is a favourite of mine though.
I'd like to add The Longest Day (the D-Day landings), A Bridge Too Far, Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone to the list of great war movies.
I've been watching this film since it came out at age 10 or 11. It's a fun film, and since I grew up with WW2 movies, I totally enjoy it, but it's not in the class with great war films.
I spelled out in another comment some of my favorites, which are smaller scale and dramatic war films:
Attack!, Men in War and Hell is for Heroes.
A prisoner of war film that has it all, with a humorous overlay, is the Billy Wilder classic, "Stalag 17". Humor is used to show a deadly serious quest for dignity and survival.

Pro war, anti war, WW2, Vietnam, anacronisms galore, etc etc etc doesn't matter - this is every tanker's favorite movie. When I got out of the Navy and joined the National Guard in the early 80's, I was a tank crewman in a cavalry unit. Everyone quoted this movie whenever possible. I am now friends with a retired Colonel from the cavalry, who frequently quotes this movie (usually something related to negative waves). I also do historical miniature wargaming, and am always looking for the opportunity to say "You could probably use some armor."
About 8 years ago I was walking with my wife along Santa Monica beach in LA when we saw this man walking his dog and after a moment we realized it was Donald Sutherland. Trying to remain cool we walked passed him nodding a hello and moved on, knowing that he knew that we knew. Still a fond memory to this day!
That was nice you gave him a polite hello without being too intrusive. I'm sure famous people appreciate being treated just like anyone else in the street.

Oh, the irony. Actors at the beginning of their careers wish they would be recognized - then they become famous and wish they could go without being recognized. I'm sure most have already worked out how to deal with admirers - Whatever someone says, they've already heard it and have a response for it.
Telly Savalas as Big Joe, he was in The Dirty Dozen and The Battle of the Bulge, both classics themselves, thanks
And the lollipop sucking TV detective Kojak.
I figured out what I had seen him in, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"
Of course he was also TV's Kojak. Telly's brother George (who was also on the Kojak series) played "Mulligan" in Kelly's Heroes.
The Burning Bridges song at the end was a big hit on the radio in 1970 in the USA

The Vietnam War era led to three very different war films that all came out in 1970. Kelly’s Heroes was probably the most conventional. MASH, which was wild and off the wall and Catch-22 which is absolutely crazy and unpredictable. Absolutely amazing cast. If you like offbeat war films, you can never top the year 1970!
Both MASH and Catch 22 are excellent war satires. Another from that era is Doctor Stangelove with Peter Sellers playing multiple characters

@@IrishGuyReacts, book first, movie second, then the TV show. Ironically has Donald Sutherland starring in another crazy war time role as Hawkeye. Also Elliot Gould as Trapper John, Robert Duvall as Frank Burns and features Gary Burghoff as Radar. He is the only one to appear in both the movie & TV show.
The whole movie is a bit of a shock to those who have only seen the TV show. Very outrageous! Well worth a look though!
Patton, and Waterloo. Although Patton was more of a character study than a straight war film.
Kelly's Heroes is ridiculous but definitely entertaining! The dynamic cast makes it worth watching, especially Carroll O'Connor as the General (he later was Archie Bunker on TV's All In The Family.) 1970 was a big year for war movies, including Patton, M*A*S*H, and Catch-22. Catch-22 is the best, in my opinion--has stinging absurdist humor throughout. Looking forward to the next war film!
It’s actually his portrayal of the General in this movie that got him the role of Archie Bunker less than a year later. You can see a little bit of Archie in the way his character is always yelling at his subordinates.
Haha the General was hilarious in this. Oblivious to what transpired with the gold as he receives a hero's welcome

The thing about minefields, and why they didn't just go around, was likely because they didn't know how far the minefield extended in each direction. It's not like the German's were just going to put the mines in a plowed field; they usually put them all over.
That's a fair point. I suppose I was just feeling nervous for the characters in the moment.
You might find small scale, dramatic war films more to your taste.
A couple classics along these lines are:
"Attack!" with Eddie Albert, Jack Palance and Lee Marvin. Great acting in this one, a riveting story about foot soldiers at the mercy of cowardly and corrupt superior officers.
"Men in War" stars Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray, a Korean War film about a platoon of soldiers given an impossible task and written off.
"Hell is for Heroes", Steve McQueen and Fess Parker, another great dramatic picture about a doomed platoon and unexpected heroism.

@@IrishGuyReactsThe big blockbusters get most of the attention, but there are lots of smaller scale, dramatic WWII films from 50s and 60s that are fantastic.
Michael nails it with “Attack”. A very unconventional Hollywood war movie for the ‘50’s. Ahead of it’s time, more of a Vietnam war feel. One of the few movies of the era that the US Army wouldn’t loan out men and equipment for because they didn’t like the script. The three stars, Jack Palance, Lee Marvin and Eddie Albert were all WWII veterans. Palance is unforgettable and Albert does a great job with a very unsympathetic role. A fantastic, unusual & under appreciated film.
Completely different, but The Best Years of Our Lives is also a must see, dealing with veterans returning home.

Battle Of Britain (Micheal Caine.)
The War Lover (Steve McQueen, Micheal Crawford. US Bomber crew. If you can find it, there is a version that uses a B17 in flight for the interior action scenes.)
I bought this VHS back in the late 80's and have watched it dozens of times. I love the characters, the dialogue, the plot, the sets and props. I think it's a great film and recommend it to anyone interested in either comedies, WW2 or Eastwood.
For WW2 and more Eastwood, Where Eagles Dare is a must watch thriller. I also highly recommend A Bridge Too Far with a lot of stars of the day in it. There are literally 100's of WW2 movies worth watching but these two are very good and not mentioned very often.

Where Eagles Dare I will be certainly watching. But I completely agree on the overall quality of this film. Honestly didn't think I would like it as much as I did.
I'd almost say that Eastwood was miscast in this film; all the other primary characters have big, clear personalities, while Eastwood is still playing the quiet, stoic 'Man With Mo Name.' I think Telly Savalas gives a great, energetic performance of a contoured character, and Don Rickles provides able comic relief, as well as Carrol O'Connor.
Might have a point there. I suppose you could also say he brings a different element than the other characters.
He kinda works as a contrast but I would've argued for something more off the wall as well
clint Eastwood was a bit put out because a different director was supposed to do this film.

Thank you. That approach generally brings me to these older movies which are almost always really good. A charm that few modern films seem to capture for whatever reason.
Good movie. Haven't seen it for many years. A more modern look at a similar scenario is Three Kings -- worth watching.

"oddball" was played by donald sutherland. one of my favorite actors and one of the biggest american movie stars of the 70s and 80s. this is a fun movie with a great ensemble cast.
but "catch-22" (1970) is even a better film, sadly overlooked today, and contains even a better ensemble cast that includes, among others, orson wells, martin sheen, martin balsam, bob baliban, the singer art garfunkle, anthony perkins and starring alan arkin. based upon the excellent book by joseph heller the film is a pure pleasure. check it out. i think you'll really like it.
Sutherland was great in "Don't Look Now". Creepy film.
I'll definitely have to check out "Catch 22" at some point.

Fun Fact: Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland reunited in Space Cowboys (2000).
Location Location Fact: The movie was mainly filmed in Yugoslavia because the Yugoslavian army still had a large quantity of Sherman tanks at the time.
Historical Fact: The blue "crosshair" shoulder patch indicates Kelly (Clint Eastwood) and his men are from the 35th Infantry Division. It's a National Guard division, comprised of guardsmen from Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas.
Tank Enthusiast Fact: The noise made by electric motors of the Tiger tank turrets was later used for the movements of the power lifters in Aliens (1986). The three Tiger I tanks used were actually ex-Soviet Army T-34 tanks, converted in great detail by specialists of the Yugoslavian Army. The care taken to make the T-34s look like Tiger tanks was notable, most period World War II movies used unmodified modern tanks as their vehicles, with minimal effort to change their appearances, often no more than painting the tanks with gray or yellow with distinctive German crosses. Oddball's (Donald Sutherland) Shermans are Yugoslavian Army M4A3E4 Shermans (post-war U.S. upgraded to 76mm in original 75mm turret).

nice job. you definitely need to watch the Dirty Dozen if haven't already seen it Lee Marvin, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savales, Charles Bronson and a host of others. this was the era of the "anti hero" movies post Vietnam and the cultural revolution

The Vietnam War was still going on in 1970 unfortunately.
Underrated film, Joe was played by Telly Savalas, who played the crazy religious guy in The Dirty Dozen, and was the star of Kojak, TV series. Lots of stars in this movie.
He was majestic in this film.
This film (one of my favorites) is definitely a "lighter"war film. Similar tone to The Dirty Dozen, Mash, etc. Patton is a great film as is Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone and others of a similar era. More modern films are more realistic and much darker in tone. Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, Fury, Dunkirk, etc.
Where Eagles Dare and The Dirty Dozen are two I definitely intend to watch for the channel.
The Great Escape is another good one.
I just found your channel. I am impressed you have reacted to so many classics. Eastwood is one of my all time favorite movie stars. Have you seen Outlaw Jose Wales? I would recommend it.
Paint Your Wagon is another Eastwood film. Great story, Gold rush comedy. Gold miners, not cowboys, same time period. It's a mediocre musical at best, with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin as leads. Great actors, can't sing though. Still It's such a good story, so funny with an excellent ending.

Kelly's Heroes is my favourite, but I'd also say give The Guns of Navarone a go, or even The Dam Busters

Oh I have seen that one on the channel. You can find it in my Eastwood playlist. Very good film. I believe the first one he directed.

I liked it. A lot. But not sure where it would rank. Not very high. But where it ranks on my listing says more about the competition than the movie itself.

Kelly's Heroes is fun, but fantastical and slightly anachronistic. War films are mostly somber presentations, more so the more they aspire towards telling history rather than telling a story. This is clearly a story, packed with action and explosions and popcorn. Donald Sutherland's hippie tank crew provided counter cultural appeal to youth audiences, with Carrol O'Connor providing a caricature of gung ho. The whole film drips with the absurdity of Catch-22, the famous novel also adapted to film in 1970. Milo Minderbender writ large. The flute line in the music accompanying the scene where the three heroes gather before they approach the German tank commander to make him an offer of gold screams Spaghetti Western. The battle with the tanks in the town, with the sniper in the bell-tower, might also have given Spielberg some ideas for Saving Private Ryan.
