Muscle Car Of The Week Video #57: 1970 Plymouth Superbird 426 Hemi
#musclecar #v8tv
www.musclecaroftheweek.com - There is nothing subtle about this week's Muscle Car Of The Week. This Everything about this 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird helps it to stand out in a crowd... the brilliant TorRed color, the high rear wing, the aerodynamic nose, and of course, the growling 426 Hemi V8 under the hood. However, this very car was chosen by some not-so-brilliant outlaws to be the getaway car from a Harrah's Casino heist in Reno, Nevada. Although they might have thought the speed of a NASCAR superspeedway flyer like this would have helped them escape, they were quickly apprehended and the car taken from them. Today, the car lives a much more lawful existence in the Brothers Collection, where it resides in restored glory safe from wrongdoers. We certainly don't condone unlawful acts, but we bet the getaway ride was fun!

I love how this car was used as a getaway car! Badass.
Still remember the first one I ever saw (1970). I was only a kid but I was convinced it was a one-off kit car some guy had hacked together. It was completely outrageous - which is why they're so valuable now.
NVRAMboi thanks, yes, we bought a 70 CORONET 500/ 383: I remember how outrageous these were, and kind of poor build , and NORTHERN Indiana rust ate bodies up. SKME dealers could, not get rid of these.. though my first sighting was a White / Blue DAYTONA , in downtown Lafayette Indiana Spring of 1970. Seemed to be to large for parkin* spots:: had forgotten .
Hey! Muscle car of the week? Gimme a break, the greatest muscle car in transportation history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only problem with this??? That Superbird isn't parked in my garage
and mine. :/ hope in humanity lost. jk, but still
Slac adjuster I want one too!
Awesome car and great story! :)
The best V8...wonderful car...
man i want this car !mopar all day !
Beautiful car that red pops with the those rims and dog dish hub caps.
The former driver had a grip on the pistol.
The Superbird is the king of muscle cars
agreed its my favriot car
Yes they are!
I would say the Daytona and Superbird are the kings of the Musclecars I love both of them!!!
I'm usually not into classic cars, but who knew that there are cool and nice looking ones out there?! I didn't even know most of these companies until I saw these cars in a racing game called cars classics. Though there are a lot of good looking classic muscle cars out there, this one has its very own unique look, looks like it stands out from other muscle cars and has its own rare uniqueness and doesn't look like every other muscle car. I'd totally drive one of these or have one as a collection
Nice!
I had two 1969 Roadrunners, both with 383 Magnum. In 1969 the Roadrunner was Motor Trend's "Car of the Year". You could buy them Brand New at the Dealership for about $3,900 and get the Hemi Package for a mere $900 more. No one I personally knew paid the extra for the Hemi because the 383 Magnum and 440 were so darned fast why pay 25% more for the 426? Us MOPAR guys never dreamed the 426 would add such value back in the early 70's. I just loved MOPAR without "hating" on Chevy or Ford. I had a '66 Mustang (289 w/4bbl and headers) in 1973 and if you wanted a 'chick magnet' the Mustang was the car to have, even if it was FAR from being a "muscle car"! The girls loved that Mustang...
They sat on the dealers sales lot - because the average car was about $2500 - and the Superbird was about $4200!!! And dealers NEVER ordered them - they were forced on to the dealers - you got at least one - like it or not!!!!!!!! This was because the AVERAGE sales time was several months - (or 5 minutes) - and you needed someone that was a NASCAR fan - AND had $4200 - and that was a hard find!!!!!!!!!
I think that most of the Superbirds came with a 440 6 pack - and they cost about $4200!!!!!!!! For some perspective - a new VW Bug cost $1995 at the time!! And gas in 1970 was 26 cents per gallon!!!!!!! I remember that because I was going to college in an MG midget and getting that $6 to fill up the 8 gallon tank took a while!!!!!!!!!!!
some good history there
Kevin, you know what would be neat? Putting every factory muscle car on the dyno and finally putting power numbers to bed. Were they underrated, were they overrated? It would be interesting to find out, and I'm sure a lot of myths would be busted.
i'd rather have this than porsche
You dont say...
Please send that cool car to me
Buddy of mine bought a lemon twist numbers matching hemi superbird in 1989 for $25,000 and a numbers matching limelight 440-6bbl superbird for $11,000. There was one more numbers matching petty blue 440 superbird that I could've should've bought also for 11k but at the time I thought if I wanted to sell it later on I'd never get what I paid out of it, I was incorrect.
orange70383 Well, I've seen wrong before - but not quite THAT wrong!!!!!!!! That Petty Blue with matching numbers - in pristine condition - today - would bring $100,000 - EASY and QUICKLY!!!!!!!!! I've seen an orange one go for $125,000 - and it was in Japan - so Step 1 would be to spend another $10,000 shipping it back to the USA!!!!!!!!!
These cars back then where cheap and sold towards high school kids unreal how cheap they were.
I'd rather have this then a Lamborghini or a Bugatti
Agreed!!! Lamborghini doesn't hold a candle to the Winged Warriors Mopar built!!!!!!
I can't get over that it was used to rob a casino that car sticks out like a sore thumb everyone and there blind grandfather can see that car LOL I'm sure it made a perfect getaway car but for being low profile it is not
King
Love the gauge package
How fast? this is the question. That's why hot rodders started modifying model A's and 33's and everything since. Seems forgotten

And the way the laws are today - YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! The police CAN AND WILL take your car if it is used in a crime!!!!! If you sell drugs from your house - they can take the house - sell it and keep the money!!!!!!!!!!!
This video color is strange
A column shift AAAAARRRGGGGHH!!
csr classics**
I might have spent a bunch of my Google play card to get one of these...
goddamn it looks like the fuckin tires haven't been changed since the 70's either. Them things are balder than shit.
Who would be dumb enough to purchase an H-Bomb Bird with a 83/4 diff and not a Dana 60?
What kind of idiot would purchase a Super Car without a 4 spd with pistol grip?
Even when I was a kid whenever we saw a Bird we knew we were looking at greatness.
Kids always buy your H-Bomb Bird get the 4 spd with pistol grip and always get the Dana 60 in the arse!!
I always thought a bench seat with 4 spd pistol grip was the absolute height of koolness!!
You could always pull your boat to the beach in a Sunday with the entire family in the car.
3 in the front with the smallest in the centre and 3 in the back that would include your two linebacker sons and your daughter in the middle.
And for future reference kids do not use a bright orange Super Bird with an H-Bomb for the get away car ! Never!! Ever!!!
What a beauty eh? Just don't use an 8 3/4 diff and a Baron Von Otto Matic in one of the absolute most beautiful ultra rare muscle bound Super Cars ever produced by any Car Company anywhere anytime!!!!
Idiots , they almost ruined the Coyotes Arch Enemy if it was not for that H-Bomb !!! It's basically a 440 4bbl car but for that super weapon of Mass Destruction!!
I bet it has a ton of Hemi - Trough !! LOL.
Private joke. Thanks Higgy your 1966 NASCAR 426 Hemi in that wreck of a not much more than a go cart T-Bucket ultra scary super weapon you had all through High School .
We did have some fun didn't we in your 426 H-Bomb.
Doge stole that car idea from plymouth
That is one ugly damn car. Sorry.
Cool car, no doubt. But damn it's ugly.
Said every idiot ever
bigfancycar That was not a car - it was a piece of art!!!!!!!!
No, come on, different not ugly, but a lot of people thought they were ugly.
