  • A video about the Casio VX-4 pocket computer, a version of the Casio fx-870P designed for Japanese IT engineering students.
In the video I walk through the basic usage of VX-4 and demonstrate programs to solve the N-Queens problem in BASIC, C using CASL.

This and the Sharp PC-1500 are my favourite pocket computers. So glad I found this channel.

Interesting. I had a Casio 850P which is related but only has BASIC. The string functions are fully implemented, RIGHT$, LEFT$, MID$, CHR$, Earlier Casio Basic had on MID$, defined and only for the exclusive character variable, $.
Variable names could contain any combination of upper or lower case letters and all of them were significant.
There were several interesting reserved names. CALC$ was the name of function memory. CALCJMP went from a program to function memory. VALF accepted a string representing a polynomial. and returns a number if the variables are all defined. The.last four characters can be defined by the DEFCHR$ function which accepts a string of HEX digit to create any sort of character.
It also has a data bank that a program can save its results to and can read them back. This was one of its powerful features. RAM expansion modules could be installed to add more RAM.
I was able to figure out its internal code and this could decode program including the the built-in in library programs.
I also had programs to compute molecular formulas, the molecular weight and percent composition and store it all to the data bank. Another program simulated a gas chromatogram.

Thank you for the excellent video! I'm looking to import a VX-4 from Japan into the UK. Bit of a weird question, as I can see you using the device in English despite it being made for the Japanese market, but how do you change the interface language from Japanese to English please?

    • @CalculatorCulture
      @CalculatorCulture  Před 3 lety +3

I don't *think* you will need to change any settings. I bought mine from Japan and the device came with the UI in English just like the text and key labels on the device. I presume students needed to understand English to study IT engineering in Japan?

@@CalculatorCulture - I thought the same, but adverts on eBay show Japanese text on the screens (not the BASIC programming lists) Perhaps there's a 'shifted' mode that allows those characters to be selected. I did think I'd just download the manual, but then again, they are all in Japanese. There can't be different variants so I'm just going to order one anyway. Thanks for the information, much appreciated!

@@The.Doctor.Venkman yeah I didn't show this in the video but there is a keyboard mode for entering Japanese characters

Great Video. The reference you gave for N Queens (hpmuseum) shows benchmarks and VX4 == 870 but with less RAM. The programs in that page do not run like yours. there is code difference and yours seems better. Can you share yours source code in text file etc. I like metal looks of 840, 850, 860, 870, VX2 (850?) VX3 (860?) 870 (VX4). Is there a way to inout something like Scientific library in VX4 etc.

@@CalculatorCulture Thank you very much. Inspired in my childhood by fx880P owned by my cousin, and after seeing your inspirational videos, I have been successful in securing couple of VX4 and one 870P from Japan. Now I am looking for 860PVC. I do not like the plastic 890 / Z1GR. Also, I have bought the USB cable for VX4 / 870P which enables to transfer data very easily. Great work. Thank you once again.

Amazing looking calculator. Why did Casio develop an aversion to ANS key later? They like to omit it from advanced calculators these days, yet its the most useful practical key.

Yeah it's not on the hardware keyboard on the Classpad 2 and shifted on the fx-cg50 and fx-5800p.

@@hyblidblackbox8847 You can use manual for Casio 850/880P - it has a broad command reference for BASIC as well as other functions which are very help in using this pocket PC. only difference would be SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY which is not available for this VX4

Recently I viewed your video about Google android Calculator. And found 69! plus 1 and then -69! calculation very interesting. I tried on calculators available with me and usually get 0 answer. However, when I tried it on VX4 and 870P, I am getting very strange result of -2.64E88, can you try and explain what is wrong with VX4. Even fx 7700GA gives 0. answer. Waiting.
