Contra 4 - Hard Mode any% Speedrun [

- This run was done on an original cartridge of Contra 4, and an original model Nintendo DS that has been modified for direct feed video output.
I did this run a while ago, but didn't get around to uploading it until I got a decent chance to mess around with avisynth scripts to make sure that the final video was in decently high quality, would play back properly at 60fps on youtube, and had the correct pixel gap between the two screens.
This was actually a pretty alright run for me, up until the final stage where I got crushed pretty hard haha. I had made some bad decisions that lead to several deaths, part of which had to do with not having a good way to practice the final stage on a DS console. I'd like to get back into this run at some point eventually, but for now this is a decent PB for the time being to upload I think. - Hry

1:01 I agree, the Jungle music hits HARD. So much nostalgia for a game that's not even that old!
i remember that it took me a lot of time for finally finishing it in hard mode because on normal you cant see the real ending and all that effort just to see a helicopter IN SPACE saving a guy naked from the top IN SPACE and saying the motives of the aliens remain a mistery, frustrating but i still enjoyed that game so much
I'm happy that level 2 is long enough (stalled enough XD) that you can hear a full loop of the best track in the game!
I didn't know this was on DS, glad I got to see it done! The game looks so good and like the previous Contra games it looked difficult, good show!

Contra is definitely a series I have fond memories of. I don't always speedrun games from the series, but every now and then I'll give it a try for fun.

Just like Metroid if I hade the chance I would play the game again cause even in 2021 where we have ultra 4k 999999fps crap these are still good games.

I remember it took me a long time and a broken ds to beat this on hard mode
I played on s40 mobile didn't have so much level and details graphics although the musics were dope specially waterfall
That Flame shot sure puts in work. Anything special for the final boss or is it just shoot it until it dies?
There are actually a bunch of patterns he can throw out that make it not possible to 2 cycle him with Flame Shot. Basically the patterns where the arm coming from where you're shooting at is stretching to the bottom of the screen, will make it such that the brain doesn't take full damage from Flame Shot (you'll see the fire dispersing when it connects if it does this). This was actually a super lucky pattern that made it possible to save an entire cycle.

Were you using an emulator? And is that mandatory for the speedrun?

Also you can totally use an emulator for the leaderboards, at least from the last time I saw the rules, haha.

There seems to be no safe way of beating the 4 dark gunners at the top of the waterfall. Came here to the wr looking for an exploit but there is none. And I bet the runner died a TON at that part and had to reset. They're completely random with their shooting rate, and it seems all I can do is save state at that part and keep practicing it.

As it turns out, when you know exactly which weapons each boss is weak to, and go through with stacking weapons and successfully carrying them to each said boss, you can tear through them.
This mode is ridiculously difficult and this run doesn't really show people why, because I don't make mistakes that kill me for the entire run until the last stage lol.
