The Holden RB30 turbo was part of the contract. Nissan were not allowed to produce a turbo version of that motor for the Australian market as the Holden version HAD to be "better". Holden wasn't going to buy the rights to the motor just to have Nissan make a fool of them with a better model. Nissan were already working on twin cam RB's and had released rb20det's which were already available in the JDM R31s, so losing the rights to the turbo was no loss to them. Ironically the VL's still had overheating issues due to the radiator height and hushed up car reviews of the time all show the Australian R31 still ended up being a better car when it came to handling and all round practicality.

Not 100% but I think nissan didn't turbo the r31 in aus because aus laws said something about no intercooler and nissan didn't like that idea so only NA for the 31 in aus

if you want a tuff sohc ford engine talk to tunnel vision and dont waste ya time going anywhere else... nissan werent turboing 3ltr engines in 1986, they said nope not getting involved and holden developed the turbo version a lazy 7:1 compression was the only way it kinda worked
