DCS: F/A-18C Hornet - Case III Radio Communications First Look (WIP)

- This is a first-look, work-in-progress video at the Case III radio communications that will be part of the DCS: Nimitz-class Aircraft carrier module. There are a few items we are still improving and adjusting, but this provides an understanding of the level of detail planned for these communications.

I remember standing on the bridge in the middle of the night during flight ops. It was so dark, I could barely make out the edges of the ship. All of a sudden, an F-18 would jump out of the blackness and land on the deck. Boom! Catch! Very scary and very impressive. You need a brass pair to even attempt it. Our pilots are awesome.

I was ship's company on the USS Eisenhower. Spent a lot of free time watching flight ops from Vulture's Row. Also, I worked in AIMD so had to go out on the deck every now and then. Such a cool thing to see up close.

@@brianw4220, I never stepped onto the flight deck during catch and recovery. I was too terrified! I'm glad to talk to another "Ike Warrior". What do you think about her mission in the Gulf right now?
@@SailorRob I salute the Ike for heading there. We did the attempted Haiti coup in 94 and then during the Med deployment sat off the coasts of Iraq and Bosnia for the no-fly zone ordersfor a couple of months so I'm proud she's going there. Sad though to find out shes set for decommissioning soon but I read somewhere that the ship replacing her is none other than the new USS Enterprise. So great legacy there!
Fantastic job DCS! It’s taken two decades for a games publisher to move towards the high bar regarding Carrier ops set by Janes F/A-18 but now it’s almost here.
Wow!!!! I totally geeked out in this. Actually caught myself holding my breath watching the video at 3/4 of a mile.

Solid flying, Wags. I've read NATOPS manuals on Case III recoveries. I've listened to interviews. I've skimmed through Powerpoint presentations. I didn't really feel like I knew how to connect what I had read or heard to my actions in the cockpit until I watched this, and you tied it all together very well.
Nimitz module is now an instant buy for me. Hope the rest of the development goes smoothly.

Wags, besides you a showing-off your skills (aham), it's great to see these features being implemented. The only other sim that I remember that had a good ATC and a realistic (for the time) marshall stacking, commecing and plataform procedures was the good old venerable Jane's F/A-18. It was fun to watch all those hornets stacked up and slowing getting to their respective positions and onto the carrier.
Jane's F/A-18 was the first game I worked on.

always struggled to grasp this whole case 3 concept until attempting it last night in the raven one dominant fury campaign and now it all makes a whole lot of sense haha thanks wags

Can I ask a silly question Wag's?? When the carrier reports Expected final bearing 344, altimeter 29.93, marshal's mother 164 radial, 21 DME ????
Should it not be "DME 21"?? If you don't have text showing it's pretty hard getting this information because of the phrasing of words here. The Play back just reports
21 "DME-ANGLES 6" No break no pause! ??

Thanks Matt! I had a great sense of accomplishment when I had my first Case III success, but these comms and getting it on time will make it even better!

There is nothing more immersive than powering down a case 3 approach and soon we will being doing it more accurately than ever.
The TGP tease is becoming more of a taunt than a tease. Had us staring at it for a good minute.
As always, one question. Is it possible to get some comms from LSO of the old DCS carrier? Thank You.
So for me to get a grade from the lso on case 3 I have to do all of this radio procedure right and get the right push time? I have been practicing landing in 1/2 mile vis fog to 2000 ft.
Great stuff!!! Hope you guys also introduce some dialogues like with Jester on the F-14. What I am inferring to is...The similar dialogues and comments on our Landing from the LSO. It would be a motivation to perfect that landing.

Amazing, as always! Will the marshall stack also consider the fuel states of the aircrafts in the stack, prioritising those with lesser fuel over others?

Edit: ... I'm wondering how this will look / feel in the Tomcat. Is it a fair assumption that it will work on the Tomcat as well?
How many flights can approach handle collapsing down the stack? This is the last part of the marshall, how many miles back can she control from?
Will we get working aircraft lifts? I'd love to spawn in the hanger, taxi to the elevator, maybe "hook up" using the hook up key to get pushed into place and lifted up onto the flight deck :D

Makes you miss the turn coordinator in a 172 with the 2min bank indicator
Will this come a detailed manual fully explaining the meanings of the communications and the standard procedures, and perhaps a couple of the methods you mentioned other pilots liked?

16:34 that’s actually “bullseye” that’s shown so when they say “say needles” no needles (ACLS) are displayed.

Not sure if I'm reading bad or old info, but the carrier doesn't seem to ever have it's lights on. I read that one must do proper comms and hit your mark in order for that to happen (which is a tad dumb IMO). Well, after watching this awesome video I just hit my DME within 2 seconds, on azimuth and all comms were correct (altitudes, etc). Still no carrier lights. I love DCS but how realistic is knowing you have an aircraft landing and staying in the dark? Which NPC do I need to buy a beer to have them flip the damn light switch and let me see my center line? Beyond frustrated because I've been practicing for two weeks just to get the lights on and nothing.
You say you get given a push time. Does that mean that the AI is also managing the stack?
Yes, all AI in the stack will also adhere to stack altitudes, offsets, and push times. Hence, it's important that the player hit their push time on time.

What are the consequences of not following protocol? I'd love to see angry radio calls, but still be capable of getting down without permission.
Wave-off and bolter would be great calls in such cases. It's all part of the landing.
@@after_midnight9592 I'm talking about disobeying even those calls. Major breach, throwing yourself infront of a plane on final, hooking wires in formation etc. Crew going absolutely insane over your shit.

Yes, anytime an aircraft checks in with marshal (single player / multi player // human / AI), they are assigned a stack altitude, DME, altitude, and push time.
Are there any comms for when the pilot is out of line, to fast, to low, bolter? Nice video though

As a Tomcat fan I find this the most important module about to be released, and the work put in it makes me feel you at ED feel the same way! My only fear is that your (hopefully) upcoming F-4 Phantom II module won't be carrier capable... which would be a great shame, don't you think?

The comms are designed to support all carrier aircraft.

Why do you release a product before it is done?
Early Access is an option for you to play this module in an early state, but it will be incomplete with bugs. The time a product remains in Early Access can vary widely based on the scope of the project, technical hurdles, and how complete the module is when it enters Early Access. Eagle Dynamics and all of our third parties strive to make this period as short as possible. An Early Access module can be played on both the Open Beta and Release versions of DCS World. Once the module exits Early Access, you will automatically have the Release version.
Any idea of time frame for all this juicy stuff?

Is there a way we can disable text of each call & disable voice of the pilot. The reason I am saying that I want to make a call myself not computer made radio calls on my behalf....

@@MattWagner Hi Matt. 4 April 2020, 7 months later. I set up a mission but when I call inbound I still get the standard Case I instructions. When I have a bolter I call call in again and then get the ICLS Case III radio call from Mother. Am I missing something about how to set up the mission so Mother will give the Case III call? Thanks
