TNs and Tailwinds (Jailwinds) are a gaol thing. In Aus. you can't wear just any clothes in the yard, but back then you could buy shoes/ or keep the ones you were arrested in. Wearing TNs (which are expensive and have a weird, ugly aesthetic) is a way to flex, because you're not just saying you can afford em, you're saying you're staunch enough to back em.
That fashion spread from gaol to the street in the early 2000s, and it happened in Germany, UK and Aus at around the same time and for a similar reason. At this point even Nike and sneaker magazines will talk about the bad reputation of the TN.
Lads from the flats where I grew up (2036/2035 iykyk) in South East Sydney were wearing em and rolling kents for em in the early 2000s, but they took off most in Western Sydney, and were always known as a "Lebo" thing.
That's what this song is about, about how what was a Lebo fashion, something worn in Bankstown, Punchbowl, Lakemba, Greenacre and further West, has become trendy, not just in other poor neighbourhoods in Aus. but also in rich northern and eastern Sydney suburbs, who have no connection to either the West or to gaol. It's a dig at the people who follow a trend that a few years back they were disgusted by.
All the people talking about anything after 2005 need to do the knowledge. When I went to visit blokes in Silverwater, Long Bay or Lithgow it was a thing.
You see em everywhere in 2200 now, but they're not as much a thing anymore in that set.
