The only two music acts that you can say were as big as 83/84 Michael Jackson(at least in a western context) are 56/57 Elvis Presley and 64/65 Beatles, that's it. Of course Jackson was able to reach more regions globally but he also had more mediums and technology(MTV for example) to do so.

Plus Michael Jackson has more merits than both, he was black and we all know that MTV was racist and refused black artists on their channel in the beginning. Back in 1982 the music industry wasn’t full opened for black artists, many couldn’t get their songs on some radio stations. MJ broke all those barriers with that album.

He was more spectacular, he wasn't just a national artist like the others you mentioned, he was huge worldwide which accounts for a lot, & his music was more palatable despite his background. Those other guys weren't born into as much pushback as Michael was.

Let's not forget the underrated English songwriter and genius Rod Temperton played a significant role behind the scene in writing songs for both Off The Wall and Thriller.

@@ricomajestic You're right he wrote Thriller and Rod Temperton also wrote Baby Be Mine and The Lady In Me Life so that's 3 songs from the 1982 album Thriller not only one. Rod Temperton also wrote the hit songs Rock With You and Off The Wall from the 1979 album of the same name so yes he did play a significant role behind the scene.
And currently he still not inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. It's a travesty.

I wish music critics, including Prince fans, would give Michael more credit for the creative process. Yeah, Quincy Jones is the main producer, but Michael is the co-producer. Michael wrote 90% of his stuff (composing & lyrics & arranging, etc.) I’m not taking credit away from Quincy. The albums Quincy was involved in are the best and the biggest. I’m just saying, give Michael the credit he deserves!

@@rickstraws92 Most of us know what a "real" producer is & we give Quincy props for his part on the production on 3 of Michael Jackson' albums, but to go as far as saying Quincy was the actual magic of those projects is a stretch by any means, especially the mind of an aging, most likely suffering from dementia, legend Quincy Jones. During Michael's lifetime, he always referred to himself as an entertainer first & foremost, but he could sing/dance/write songs & produce/& play piano, drums, & guitar some too. As a Prince admirer as well, I agree Prince was definitely a better musician, but Michael Joseph Jackson was probably the greatest overall entertainer who ever lived.

No doubt Quincy Jones helped Michael Jackson a lot at the same time he wanted to be in charge of everything in my personal opinion I believe thats one of the reasons Michael Jackson left him, he wanted freedom to be able to do what he wanted to do, it kinds of taking me back to Jackson 5 leaving Motown to do what they wanted to do

And yes, MJ wanted to come into his own. Up until Off the Wall, He had to go along with what his Father and Motown wantes him to do. He never had full control of his life and his visions back then.
Mike wanted the level of quality and genius Quincy provided but Mike wanted to control it and be mainly credited for it. You can do that with star-struck newcomers or unknown producers, maybe even with someone less successful but Quincy was well established before "Off the Wall". As great as MJ was, those albums with QJ were collaborations. Mike was not Q's equal in the studio. Very few will ever be.... Quincy Jones put the full weight of his experience in those records and a skilled ear can hear it. It was a team situation and Q had a team assembled in his projects that preceded his MJ era recordings. He used some of the same personal on MJ's work. Those recordings are legendary and Q had a vibe/sound. It was/is unwise to devalue the impact of Q on those albums.

When MIchael & Quincy started working together, Michael was still a teen and Quincy was a powerful man in the industry with both great talent and experience. They were a dream team for sure and produced three great albums. As Michael grew older, he probably wanted more control over his art and left the nest. Quincy was of his dad's generation after all, it's a shame that it ended badly.

Sure, MJ had successful albums and had become a superstar but Owning vast amounts of publishing? Nah. Owning Sony publishing? Nope. It happened. MJ owned all of Sony Publishing when he bought ATV and ATV merged with Sony. MJ owned 500k songs but also owned the Beatles, Dylan, Elvis [marriage to Lisa makes a bit more sense because she owned Graceland and fifteen percent of Elvis catalog] MJ also owned Cher, Springstein and Eminem; and purchased Graceland in 1988.

David Geffen said he was one of the smartest artists he ever did business with and wished that MJ could have held back spending $30M in the ranch and furnishings. Artists in general did not understand exactly how much he was doing in paving the way for future artist publishing ownership deals and that even though he just looked like a quirky artist because all artists are actors MJ was very business smart. After death his Estate still owns the rights to his original master recordings all the way back to the Jackson Five, unreleased songs and unreleased solo songs. So the trial was directly about all of that past, current and future wealth.

If you combine MJ’s Dangerous and QJ’s Back On The Block, that’s the Post-Bad sound. Neither of them lost in my opinion. For them to work together from 1977-1988 was remarkable. Sometimes the creative process can help a team to achieve unbelievable heights and grow apart for the good of everyone. Their history is eternal.

QJ’s legacy was already set in stone by then with nothing else to prove. Tevin wasn’t a one-hit wonder. If you’re rating his success according to “Pop” standards that’s quite limited and narrow. MJ’s work post-Dangerous was a hit or miss or over-produced. He spent too many years chasing the success of his QJ era versus the music not sounding forced and bloated. The decline was inevitable for both of them as with any artist. With no exception.

One of the most.....the most! Thriller is still the #1 best selling album. There was nothing like Micheal Jackson. His moves, his genius, his music. Simply one of a kind. I'm 60. I grew up with Micheal. He was amazing as a kid, then just went nuts. I'm a jazz and classical guy. I know it's weird, yet I could appreciate that he was simply the best in the pop culture. No one really came close. Not in my time frame anyhow.
I actually prefer all of Michael's album after Bad compared to before.

The album Thriller is really great, you can listen to it over and over. Next, the album Off The Wall is really decent, and the song "Off The Wall" is really great. However, the album Bad, I can only take here and there. I can't constantly listen to that album over and over. It's not great, it's okay.

I mean, why to mention his appearance when Quincy was music producer but not his makeup artist or his doctor. Even though, he did it because of trauma of childhood, how does it really influence the fact that he was and still is the greatest of all time musician. Sometimes I believe people aren't able to look at these two parts separately. We all have our issues, come in, have we ever been under so much pressure publicly. I still can't get it, it's 21 century already! And we know all facts! Being so much abused by his nasty father, it was a miracle he could present us his brilliant music and songs and not committed suicide. Dangerous was still an amazing solid album, it sold about the same as Bad. I thought that was his last truly groundbreaking album before his personal life and tribulations overshadowed his professional work. I love the album cover for Dangerous as well, my favourite of all his albums.
It's clear that, despite the genius Quincy has sparkled in '80s, he increasingly had something wrong going on.
Michael was right, when wanted a change. And New Jack Swing, together with Hip Hop, was way more good to reinvent Michael Jackson's legend than Rap, as it happened actually.
As a human being, finally, Quincy has been really disappointing. He didn't understand a lot, really a lot of the true Michael Jackson. And I'm not telling I know Michael better than him, I'm telling that the Michael Jackson that comes out from dozens of other friends surrounding him during years is far different from the Michael Quincy depicted.
It's a shame that Quincy didn't defend Michael from the sexual allegations, this is a point that forever will be a stain on his soul.
And for the surgery as well, he could clearly blame him for the excess he thought Michael was pushing for some parts of his body, but his words show that he completely didn't understand what the diseases Michael was suffering from made him. I guess the two never was close friends, but close collaborators.
Quincy didn't know Michael that well, honestly, and getting older he became more and more weird in his speechs. The way he changed the name of his tour to put a distance from Michael is coward and mean, a move only small men could do. And Quincy proved he is a small man. A genius in music, but a dwarf as a human being.
In the end, while Michael was alive, he always had gentle and respectful words for Quincy, and always recognized his contribution. On the opposite, Quincy has often been rude, unfair and sometimes offensive and slimy against Michael, since they fell apart. Period.

If the story of Quincy kicking MJ is true-- it must have felt like working for Joseph again. They weren't fighting *with each other* in the situation described: Michael on the floor like "a pile of rags" and Quincy standing over him kicking him and shouting at him to make it perfect. 😣 Getting away from Quincy would have felt like getting away from his father's control- whatever excuses MJ made about Quincy not being trendy enough.

The beginning of the end for Michael was actually his alliance with David Geffen. He influenced Michael to make too many bad decisions that would have long term negative consequences for him.

Geffen ruined a few people's careers, including Donna Summer. Interestingly, Donna hated working with Quincy Jones (Geffen had insisted on it). Donna said that on her 1982 album, Quincy had made her feel like "a guest on a Quincy Jones album" rather than it being her own album.

People love to dismiss pop music artists that don't perform on stage with an instrument or are not known for playing an instrument. Someone that is a vocalist & songwriter somehow isn't considered a "real musician". Many of MJs biggest & most iconic songs from Thriller album like Beat It, Billie Jean & Wanna Be Startin Something, Michael had already created demos of these songs laying down the different parts by the time he got in the studio with Quincy.
But he could play a lot of instruments, just not proficiently (self taught).
Plus Michael and his brother Randy co-wrote The Jacksons' classic Shake Your Body Down To The Ground while he and brother Jackie wrote Can You Feel It which has been sampled by many artists including Charli Baltimore and was used in the film Drumline
Michael Jackson did not need a producer and probably quickly out grew Quincy. He probably felt as though Quincy was basically putting his name on his work and didn't use his ideas. Infact, Quincy was most likely against what Mike was trying to do so I understand why Michael wanted Quincy's awards.

As an '80s kid, Mike was a HUGE part of my youth. I think he and Q worked together very well; it was just meant to be. What I don't like is Q talking trash about Mike years later just because they grew apart creatively. It's like a relationship between a man and a woman; sometimes people grow apart, but in the end, you should still respect them. He said Mike stole a lot of things; well, every artist borrows things here and there. It's normal to be highly influenced, but to say Mike was not original is pure BS. If anything, he was the most original of them all. Q needs to put respect on Mike's name because, in the end, Mike made Q a household name as well a LOT of cash.
"Dangerous" is my favorite MJ album.
When you get creative people in the studio, nothing is going to be peaches and cream. I remember watching Janet's documentary series last year where it showed her, Jimmy Jam, and Terry in the studio, and they were arguing heatedly before she stormed out. That's normal. The last thing you need in a recording studio is "yes-people"; you need individuals who will push your buttons. No matter how it ended between Mike and Q, at least we got some groundbreaking albums that no one will ever surpass.
I’ve read all this craziness about Michael deserving all the credit. The dance moves are his and I’m sure he had a hand in writing and arranging but there were 31 musicians who had a credit on the Thriller album. There was also Quincy’s right hand man Rod Temperton who had a huge influence on Michaels 80s sound. Quincy was like the head coach, Temperton was a star coordinator and MJ was like the superstar QB. You needed all the elements to make the magic work. As for Quincy, he was a jazz bandleader and then he produced movie scores. He had limited commercial success for most of his career because he was more of a studio musician/producer but widely respected in the industry. He did the soundtrack for Roots, he produced the theme for Sanford and Son, he introduced the world to Bob James and later James Ingram; he and Temperton produced “ Give me the Night” for George Benson. He was a major star in the jazz genre but it was Quincy’s collaboration with Temperton that really put Q over the top in the late 70s and early 80s

Quincy singing or dancing has nothing to do with Producing and Arranging songs on an album. For that matter, neither does record sales. Producing, writing, progressing chords are the technical means of creating the musical art.

I can understand the difference. Decades later, the original demos of many MJ songs were published as extras on one of his posthumous albums. Listening to the demos, they seemed fully intact, almost finished. Meaning, Quincy Jones's input was not as significant as his producer credit could justify.
It sounds like they brought out the best in each other despite their differences. Michael was innovative, but Quincy knew what worked. They challenged each other, and because of that they put out some of their best stuff. I won’t say Michael’s future producers were yes men, but I think their relationship with him was different, and you can hear it in the music. Add on top of that the controversies Michael was mired in, and I think a lot of his music started to suffer. Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE almost every Michael Jackson song out there. But even I’ve gotta admit that what Michael and Quincy had was lightning in a bottle.

When they weren’t working, and after they split, I think Michael and Quincy always remanded friends. I say this because they attended some of events together, like Sammy Davis’ birthday celebration, The Jackson Family Honors, The 30th anniversary celebration. According to Quincy, he was suppose to see him a week before he died.

One of the best pairings in the music industry for sure, but also two big egos colliding at some point down the road! It's clear to me that MJ's downfall started the second he hooked up with David Geffen and the objective all along was to somehow wrestle that catalog away from him. He should have stuck with J. Branca, F. Dileo and listened to Bert Fields, I doubt the accusations and trials would have taken place. It's sad that many people tried to control him and it was only normal for him to distance himself from them, but he needed those three on his side. MJ you will always be missed, there is simply no better entertainer than you. Peace!

I've listened to a Quincy Jones interview that he did sometime ago. And I do not think anything Q said about MJ was false. MJ was tight as a drum when conducting business. Prince complained about the record companies choke hold. But he conducted the same type of unfair business with his artist. Prince and MJ were very caring and generous. And both of them tight as tight gets when conducting any type of record business. The story about MJ not wanting to give Greg Philligans his fair share of points for his contribution to a song is true. Greg has played with the greats in the industry. Non of these people are saints. They are flawed, they can be petty, unforgiving, cheap, mean. And turn around and do kind thoughtful caring things for the less fortunate.

Some of the best albums in history have emerged from differences between several geniuses working together.
MJ's greatest album is Dangerous, it had everything from rock ballads to gospel, to hip hop, to New Jack Swing, to R&B to Pop, and resulted in some of his most iconic music videos like Black or White, Jam and Remember The Time. It was the first album I listened to from start to finish as a kid even do I didn't really know who the artist was except the legendary name and that my aunt was a huge fan. I found the album ready in the cd player at her house and it was a fun trip, replayed songs like Who Is It, Give Into Me, Will You Be There, etc several times before going to the next ones. I still haven't had this experience with any other album. Sorry, but Michael Jackson was the true magic behind Michael Jackson, everyone else just contributed to what was already there.
Your opinion is colored by having grown up with Dangerous being your first MJ album you listen to, so of course you'd think it was the best. However Thriller was superior to Dangerous. I was 7 when Thriller was big and 14 when Dangerous was released, so I was still young when both albums came out. Some of the songs on Dangerous sound dated. The New Jack Swing sound is no longer in style, so some songs sound stuck in the 90's. Though Thriller was released in '82, it transcends the era it was made, so it still sounds vibrant today. I hear more Thriller songs still on the radio today than I do songs from Dangerous.
That isn't to say that Dangerous wasn't a great album because it is. However while Dangerous is a great album, Thriller is timeless.

This is what actually happened
"At one point when we were working on Thriller, we were up for days - all of us were just completely exhausted, man. I was bound to snap at one point. I don’t remember the exact reason, it might have been cause a harmony wasn’t right or the lyrics were wrong, but Michael did something I didn’t want, and I got pissed. And I mean pissed, man.
And in that moment I just got up and stormed over to Michael and just screamed at him - I don’t even remember what I said but I was just yelling at his face for not doing something right. After a second I snapped out of it and I looked over at Bruce, and noticed he was looking right at Michael. I looked back at Michael… and it was weird, man, cause he was staring right at me, but he wasn’t looking at me. Like he was seeing something else - his eyes were all fogged up. I stared at him for like 10 seconds, and I reached out and touched his shoulder to make sure he was okay, and he sort of snapped out of it and put his arms up, like I was gonna hit him.
And it was in that exact moment that I realized exactly what I did, and why he reacted like that, and I felt sick…
We took a little break after, since Michael was a little off for the next few hours. Everything was okay, Michael got over it though by morning… He’s so forgiving, you know? All I could think after that was 'Man, I hope this kid doesn’t see me like he sees his father.'

Quincy’s version is horrible enough. People don’t understand the impact of abuse on a kid. They don’t become fine when they turn 18. The fight or flight panic thing stays for many years. Most adults I know who were abused developed serious anxiety issues as adults because that early indoctrination made every imperfection or mistake a huge stress and messed them up. They usually need years of counseling or medication to overcome it. You can see how MJ was in interviews in those early years, kind of poker faced and nervous, took him years to get past that. The stare that QJ describes is exactly that physical reaction a kid that was abused has when screamed at, it all comes flooding in. No matter how useful QJ experience, that young man needed to not work with someone who couldn’t control his shit, even if he didn’t hit him. Though I don’t really trust QJ to tell the truth if he had. Wonder where the story came from?
