    Toine Hezemans later told the following story: during practice his team determined that a full tank compliant with the rules would last only for 1h50m. In order to avoid a 2nd tank stop close to the end of the race, they built in a slightly larger and hence illegal, fuel tank and Hezemans would stop in the last lap under the bridge between Lesmo II and Variante Ascari, where no track marshal would be standing, get a bag of plastic balls from the trunk and put the balls in the tank which got him through scrutineering.
