Almost all new electric tools have a break in period when they burn off the oils used in manufacturing, I've never bought a hair dryer that didn't smell burned when I first used it or had a bit of smoke, when you turn your heater on the first time it gets cold it smells and may give off smoke too

My father has NHL and MDS. His lymphoma is in remission at the moment thanks to advances in research, and we are prepping for a bone marrow transplant (I’m donating) to continue treatment. Always great to hear success stories so crossing my fingers We will both be able say our dads are in full remission soon!!

For the hair dryer there is often a coating on the element that will sort of burn off with the first use. This happens with lots of legit brands. I'm guessing that is what you were seeing at first.
