- There are 2 reasons why Michael Jordan didn't beat Larry Bird in the NBA Playoffs.
#1 - Michael Jordan faced Larry Bird with his cocaine circus Bulls teammates. Larry Bird only defeated the cocaine circus Bulls. Jordan competed with that handicap early in his career.
#2 - By the time Michael Jordan had reasonable teammates, Larry Bird was always injured or eliminated. Larry Bird avoided losing to Jordan in the playoffs because Bird couldn't stay healthy and/or in contention for a title.
At the very beginning of this game broadcast, when they show Larry Bird on a bike, injured... just remember that image as to why Jordan didn't get a chance to beat Larry Bird, in the Playoffs. Jordan had some legendary dominating performances, individually, against Larry in the regular season, in the playoffs, and just needed a REASONABLE team so he could truly compete inside a playoff series with the Celtics.
So, yes, Larry Bird beat the cocaine circus Bulls in the playoffs twice, but by the time Jordan had an even reasonable team, Larry was constantly hurt or eliminated before Jordan could get those playoff wins over Larry.
This is no disrespect to Larry Bird or the great Boston Celtics. What Larry Bird had achieved at this point in his career, he really had nothing left to prove. As a response to modern fans who question why Jordan never got his revenge... well... Jordan beats Bird in the playoffs, if Bird wasn't always hurt or eliminated. That's the true explanation. Bird avoided the revenge series.
Larry Bird couldn't hold the torch up long enough for Michael Jordan to take it from him.
As for this game... The Celtics featured the late great Reggie Lewis, Robert Parish (HOF), Dennis Johnson (HOF), Danny Ainge, Jim Paxson, Brian Shaw, and Kevin McHale (HOF). The Celtics were on an absolute mission in this contest.

On July 27, 1993, during off-season practice at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, Lewis suffered sudden cardiac death on the basketball court at the age of 27 years old.
Reggie Lewis was one of the greats of the era, and would have been one of the greats of all time if it wasn't for his tragic passing. RIP Reggie Lewis.
Have you got the Nov 9, 1988 GAME Bulls vs Celtics? MJ got 52 points & 9 steals. Bombing 3z!
the cavs and knicks were two of the most improved teams and Jordan with that average team at that point, upset both the cavs and knicks in the playoffs, great gems and teaching points bruce blitz, just so younger fans can grasp and understand the magnitude of what Jordan did in 1989.....UNBELIEVABLE carry job
RIP Reggie Lewis greatness was gone to soon
@16:37 would have been the eastern semifinals matchup if Michael doesn’t hit “the shot.”
