- Turning Red is being written and directed by Domee Shi who has her own special connections to the characters, and is set to release on March 11, 2022. As of right now, not much is known about the film other than what we saw in the recently released trailer. But don’t worry, as always with Pixar films, the trailer was actually packed full of clues that will help us get a better understanding of who Mei Lee is, and why she transforms under pressure. From things like the school she attends, to how her mother is acting, there is just a ton to take in from this trailer, and all of these subtle clues actually help us answer the biggest burning question we have. Why does Mei turn into a giant red panda? And that’s exactly what we are going to unpack today, so make sure to stay to the end of the video for our prediction on HOW and WHY she turns into a giant red panda!

Symbolism wise: the mom is wearing blues and greens with green earrings...only after her jacket is open do we see her red necklace...maybe symbolism for blending in with her new society while also holding her culture close to her heart while her daughter wears it proudly (red)
It could also be that she’s been taught to hide it from people over the years.

@@lilythearcticfox I think she might also be a red panda but was taught to hide that part of her from society. maybe she dyed her hair to fit in? That older guy on the roof has a red panda mask so maybe these panda/human transforming beings are considered "myths" of some legend?
“Her mother probably has a huge connection with meis powers.” Indeed this is true due to the fact that In one of the first trailers her mother says that.
A couple of things. Mei has black hair at the beginning of the trailer, it only turns red after she first turns into the panda. It's likely symbolic of her connection to the panda.
I think its pretty likely that the panda is an allegory for her period. When she says "I'm a huge red monster", she's in the bathroom panicking. Her father also says "It's happened already?", which highlights that he knew it would happen, but he wasn't ready for it to happen so young. Its a common theme among fathers.
Turning Red is the first animated Disney or Pixar film to be set in Canada. At least that I can recall.
The creators of Soul confirmed that 22 landed in India. And both Soul and Turning Red appear to be contemporary, meaning 13 years haven't passed since Soul took place. So 22 doesn't appear anywhere in this film.
Toronto has the distinction of being one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, contending mainly with New York City for that top spot. Which is why this is showcased in the film.
Actually, Turning Red is set in early 2000s.
I believe Brother Bear takes place where Canada would end up hundreds/thousands of years later
@@Neevkl_7 It's never specified whether Brother Bear is set in Canada or Alaska. Given how far north they are (they see northern lights almost every night) and the presence of orcas, I'm inclined to believe they're in Alaska.

Maybe the mom turns into something too, and the red necklace makes it easier to regulate. Then Mei will get one at a certain age or when she is ready somehow.
If that’s the case maybe her mom would give it to her when she hits puberty (if she hasn’t yet) when your emotions are fluctuating the most?

I think the mom transforms too because in the trailer she said, “This little quirk runs through our family.” So that means that this has happened through generation of their family. Also in the trailer Mei’s dad said, “This happened already?” Which mean the family had expected this to happen and also implies on this happening before.
"Mei wears red and her friend wears green"

I think Mei's transformation involves her dad.
Father issue?
@@dangdao8068 I meant her dad could be an animal spirit.
Hmmmm
*Cough* Bigfoot plot.
Oh no
i think that it does have something to do with that necklace, because i noticed that her mom's eyes are the same color of Mei's, so i think her mom use to turn into a red panda or an animal too but with the power of that necklace it turns off that part of her, because she's scared to show herself to the world so she keeps it in and with the power of that necklace it drains that big part of her thats why her hair is black now i think it use to be red, but like in Rapunzel when Flynn cut her hair it removed her power. i think that's what is causing her to stay neutral. i think "Turning Red" is going to be a lot like "Luca." anyway that's my opinion, and if you read this comment thank you! have a good day!!! ❤
in a different trailer it shows that their family had a history with red pandas and that the power mei has skipped her mother and went to her. mei has this power because of a curse, there is another trailer that talks all about this
There’s another trailer and it shows a dream Mei had, and she USED to have black hair, but after she turned into a red panda, she got orange hair.
She has a bully, I think that’s why she hates her mom coming to school.
It's actually shown in the newer trailer that came out that Mai had jet black hair before she gained the ability to be a giant red panda from a bad dream, which was then proven to be a gift that was passed down from their family. And it's also not only exitement that makes her transform, it can be any strong emotion she currently has like sadness or fear, hense why she stays as a giant panda in the newer trailer, since she has strong sadness, fear, and anger.
Technically speaking it's not from a bad dream. It's an inherited ability that emerged once she reached a certain age.
Just by looking at it I can tell that pump is modeled after Medtronic’s MiniMed. Though those models are starting to become outdated. I started out with that exact same one, in purple, back in like 2012. I have two now in my basement, in blue, since I’ve upgraded to tandem last year.
Also love how comically large it is in cartoony style. I guess at that age it might of felt that big but the pump really fit right into your pocket. I also always broke the clips so I don’t often wear it for all the see though I could careless who sees it.
The tube was another story. Tubing always sticks out unless I carefully tuck it in which I never do. The tubing catches on everything, door knobs, kitchen drawers. To this day I still lasso things with my pump. 😅
We need an updated version, the new trailer shows alot of her theroys to be incorrect. Her hair does reselmble her trait but she does have black hair at first in the new trailer, she has a bad dream causeing her to turn into the red panda, then turning back and haveing red hair
I love how its just a trailer and still hasnt came out yet and they already have theories. I LOVE IT!!
Yes, the mother's necklace COULD mean something, but you're leaving a little but IMPORTANT detail: what about the *father?* He wasn't present at all, and it really makes me feel like he is linked to what Mei has. Just my theory.
Edit: Well, now that my comment is the most liked one, why don't you make a video about this father theory? It would make a lot of people think about this. "Well, the plot explains that the MOTHER and Mei are present in the movie." I know, but it doesn't mean Mei DIDN'T have a father, only because he disappeared or died. Just think about that.
Edit 2: Omg this comment has SO much likes (i had 20 likes when i did the first edit). Guys if you really like this theory, why don't tell me what do you think about it? I would really love to see your thoughts about this!
I think the theory might be right maybe that necklace that Mei's mother has could trigger her transformation into a giant red panda.
@@karensternad23212 I actually think it might be the opposite and that the necklace her mother wears stops her from becoming a red panda and that it’s hereditary. The father theory is still valid though.
@@isabelwonders8711 I don't really know about the necklace either (even tho it's possible), but yea, the father theory is really... interesting. I really hope the next trailer comes out very soon so that I can (probably) get my theory confirmed! And if any people is interested on this theory, just tell me what do you think about it!
maybe i wonder if this is a "wolf childen" thing
I think her father had the same power
When I heard about this film coming out, I was literally like 'woah that's me'
I'm Chinese-Canadian, I live right in Downtown Toronto, and the Chinatown setting is literally a five minute's walk from my apartment. I'm so excited to be able to have that LA or NYC experience of 'woah I can see my house being knocked over by King Kong'.. but, yknow, without a giant gorilla.
I personally feel that the mom has that necklace to conceal her own ability and gift. Maybe Mei’s mom also had the gift, and the necklace is how, or symbolizes how, she controls it even with strongly present emotions.
If the necklace is what I think it is, Mei not having one to control her powers beyond her emotions could simply be because it isn’t readily something that’s available to anyone with the gift, or might have a deeper meaning.
Whether I’m right or close to being right, I think we can all tell turning red is going to be a great film to watch, no matter what the moms necklace means. If meaning anything.
If you saw in the trailer, when you say “Why is Mei’s hair red and why is her mom’s hair black?” I think mei’s transformation into a red panda makes her hair red because in the starting part it shows her hair is black.
I feel like the mother’s necklace has something to do with Mei’s gift. Like the gift is passed down from one generation to another., and the necklace helps to regulate transformation.
It could be metaphore for period issue and medicine
I like your pfp dream smp fan :)
I think you are completely right
Yo no ablo taka taka
your correcto hello from 2022
I just got so excited to see the girl who has an insulin pump in the movie, at 9:41 you can see that she has a cgm sensor too! I have Type 1 Diabetes and use both of these, I also happen to live in Canada near Toronto so that's cool too. Representation for disabilities has been lacking so I'm so glad that at least the background characters have some diversity disability-wise.
Well actually, Mei's hair was the same hair color as her mother, it changed to the color of the fur of a red panda when the gift was finally released to Mei, theres actuallh another trailer that proves that. In the other trailer Mei had the same hair color until she had a dream. Once she woke up then turned into a giant red panda, when she was back to normal, her hair was now the color of the fur of a red panda.
I think what makes a good movie good is an ability to want to be in the world with the characters, and be able to relate to said characters.
As we all know, Pixar has a knack for using cute stores to talk about huge real world issues, usually those related to what people deal with everyday, or will eventually have to deal with. For instance, Toy Story 4 was about moving on after someone important inn your life is no longer there anymore, and finding happiness again without them,
I guess I'm just super focused on the heartbeat and protective mother thing. This brief snippet makes me think of a mother with a disabled child, or maybe a child with a health issue. Parents with kids like that care a lot, but can sometimes get overly protective and doubt their child, which in turn leads to the kid dealing with self doubt and also some annoyance/irritation towards the parent. Maybe this is what Pixar wants to tell us about this time? Maybe Mei's ability is supposed to represent a heart condition of some sort that acts up when her emotions are running high?
IDK these are just thoughts
I really like your idea of this representing parenting a child with a disability. I like to imagine that when Mei turns into a red panda, it is like having an autistic meltdown due to high levels of emotional stress and overwhelm. Another reason why I link it to an autistic meltdown is because of the scene where Mei is running across the rooftops in her panda form and is crying and flapping her hands (like stimming). The growling ("grrr!") could also be a form of verbal stimming. Her heart also starts to beat pretty fast, showing her feelings of anxiety and stress.
Also, just the fact that she turns into a giant red panda and not just a regular-sized redpanda could represent how attention-drawing meltdowns can be. They are almost impossible not to spot and can be hard to just ignore because of how 'big' they can get.
Another thing is that Mei has to learn to accept herself for who she is - even if she does not fit in with most kids in her school. She even tries to hide her 'redpanda-ness' by beginning to cover her, now, red hair with a hat which, to me, reminds me of when I'm masking my autistic and adhd traits to avoid unwanted judgment and attention.
Like you said, her mother seems quite protective - maybe because she is cautious of her child's difference and is probably afraid of Mei showing her redpanda form because it is so 'unordinary' in the eyes of society - (just like how some unaware neurotypicals may view others who are neurodivergent.) The mother might feel that Mei showing that 'side' of herself could be dangerous to her(Mei).
(In the other trailer):
When Mei wakes up and realises she is a giant redpanda, to me, that feels like suddenly realising you may be different from others around you (the difference being you are ND). And then when the parent take Mei to the place where the mother tells her about how the Red Panda thing is a "little quirk that runs in the family", it could be equivalent to Mei getting a diagnosis, or just simply finding out about her neurodivergency. And then suddenly, all her ND traits become more obvious which could be represented as Mei suddenly turning into a red panda and her hair changing from dark to bright red. I noticed my adhd and autistic traits a lot more after learning about them.
At the end of the movie, Mei probably accepts her redpanda-ness; and not tries not to hide it. This could give a message to neurodivergent people (or anyone who is different from what society deems, the 'norm'), saying that: you should feel comfortable in letting yourself be whoever you are and not worry about what others may think of you.

They probably have Mei’s friend in green so it can compliment and contrast the red she wears. It may be intentional in a symbolic way, but might have also been a visual choice due to green being reds complimentary colour, Edit: Mei had dark hair to begin with and it wasn’t until after she turned that her hair became red

Diversity is great... if it's done well. Please don't let them include an overdose of diversity solely for the purpose of being 'diverse'. To portray the main cast as like 'normal' people and all the 'diverse' people as somewhere along the sliding scale between 'irrelevant to plot' and 'Oh Look at the Shiny Diverse Person!' does no service to the diversity.
Diversity is indeed great, but I think (or at least hope) that TR is not going to go down this direction Disney has been frequently going nowadays.
Thanks for the quarter-hundred upvotes!
Agreed, calling attention to something just because it is different has the negative effect of just having it there, and letting the people to whom the diversification represents see for themselves. IMO Calling unnecessary attention to it, just to say "HEY LOOK AT ALL THIS DIVERSITY" has the same effect as changing already existing canonical characters to another gender/race.
Diversity that is solely for the sake of "Hey LOOK at us being all DIVERSE and everything!" is very self serving.
Someone mentioned Toronto is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, and I'm not sure if that's true but if it is perhaps that might contribute to it
I second that. Its not a problem if they are side characters, but if they start shining a light on it, it becomes little more than tokenisem. Waving a flag around saying 'LOOK LOOK, WE HAVE THIS CHARACTER WHO IS THIS!' which, quite frankly, is more annoying and insulting for everyone.
