    Slugs have become an absolute hype among air rifle shooters in the last 1-2 years! If you watch air rifle CZcams videos in English, you’ll often see shooters using slugs to shoot at long distances, sometimes over 100 yards.

    After watching Matt Dauber's video on the design and evolution of the "Javelin" 2nd generation slugs, it's clear there's more to creating slugs than just squeezing them out. They ran ballistic and firing tests throughout the process and now have slugs that essentially fit into the same hole at 40 meters. Making them at home seems cool, but if your gun prefers a .05 mm difference in the slug dimensions, you're out of luck on the money sunk into the slug press. But it seems they do sell the slugs alone on the website, so you can try the slugs first in your gun, before investing in the press.

      This really means nothing. I made a 32 grain .250 slug in my Corbin press and die. It was TERRIBLE in my rifle at 940 fps. But I turned the rifle up and experimented. At 975fps is sub moad at 100y.
      Air gun accuracy is a fickle b**ch. so much comes into play…. That just because you pressed some slugs out and they didn’t shoot, doesn’t mean the slugs are bad.

  • @motorgearhead
    @motorgearhead Před rokem +1

    This appears to be a very high quality press. Swaged slugs tend to higher quality through uniform dimensions and weight, generally speaking.
    However, I cast my own 30 caliber air rifle slugs and through experience and good quality control (grouping by weight) I can get accuracy results that rival or maybe even exceed a swaged projectile.
    I cast then resize each slug by running it through a reloading press with a sizing die. The sizing die decreases over diameter projectiles to a uniform size. I then weight sort the slugs into groups. Each group will weigh .5 grains of each other (for slugs over 100 grain weight). Everything I generally shoot is well over 100 grns. Note: you must lube the slugs prior to sizing. I use a common diy case lube for center fire case resizing. It’s liquid lanolin and isopropyl alcohol. (4:1 isopropyl to lanolin). Anyway you end up with a fairly uniform cast projectile that can be very accurate at 100 yards.
    Here is a video of my cast 120 grain .308 slugs Vs Nielsen specialty ammo 120 grain hp slugs shooting at 100 yds. I am shooting a non-regulated but tethered .308 Air Force Texan air rifle. NSA makes great slugs! However, on this day I shot my own cast wheel weight slugs a little better. My 5 shot group was 1.08 MOA @ 100 yards. That’s a group smaller than a golfball in outside weather conditions at 100 yds.

  • @motorgearhead
    @motorgearhead Před 2 lety +4

    Swagging slugs is a very precise method of manufacturing slugs.
    But it generally is expensive to get started. I cast slugs for 30 caliber air rifle and 22, 38, 9mm, 44 & 45 caliber slugs for firearms.
    Casting is much more economical than swaging. However it is more dangerous as you are handling molten lead and fumes produced are hazardous.
    Equipment associated with casting bullets will include a lead pot/furnace. I use a Lee lead pot with bottom pour design. Bottom pour means you place the mold under the pot and lift a valve handle to dispense the molten lead into the mold. A Lee lead pot will cost ~$100 (USA).
    I purchase my big bore mold from Lee for $30-100 depending the number of cavities and if handles are included or must be purchased separately. For small air gun calibers I use NOE bullet molds. Their molds generally run about $150-180 and will require handles ($30).
    NOE produce limited quantities of molds and popular air rifle caliber molds are often out of stock. There are other companies as well.
    All that said, casting is relatively easy to learn as there are many videos online that will show you how. You do need a space that is well ventilated. I do my casting outside under a gazebo and also use a fan to maintain safe air flow. You could also setup in a garage or storage building if you have the space available.
    Anyway, the point is you can make your own slugs by casting and get started for under $300.
    I also size and weight sort my slugs if being shot a distance beyond 50 yds. I use pure lead and also scrap wheel weight lead.
    Pure lead is best for hunting as even solid (non hollow point) slugs will mushroom at velocities above 750-800 fps.
    Wheel weight lead will also mushroom but not as much as it is a harder lead but still viable for use in air rifles. If you need to penetrate heavy bone, wheel weight lead might be a better option as it will deform less and punch through.
    Pure lead just barely out performs wheel weight lead when shooting at 100 yds (accuracy). I have several videos testing pure lead and wheel weight lead out to 200 yds shooting a .308 AirForce Texan. Feel free to check it out. I almost exclusively shoot my own cast bullets out of my Texan 308 air rifle. And I use cast wheel weight lead about 90% of the time. If unfamiliar with the Texan .308 if fires a .309 caliber slug at weights up to 180 grains. The most energy I’ve seen it produce and have on video is 291 FPE using a pure lead 173 grain projectile. I was comparing the rifle’s energy to a 4” barrel 38 spl revolver. Link below:

Unfortunately, I’ve found my rifles don’t like about 50% of the molds I’ve bought. I guess I need to add that critique is based on performance at 100 yards. If shooting closer distances, you may have a higher success rate with mold choice.

Would really like to make my own slugs, but I have seen the price for the Presslug kit, and it is way to expensive for my budget. If I had I would buy, since it is also made in the EU (CZ) and not some China crap....I have guns from .177 up to 30, and on my Impact have from .177 to 25, so you can see it would be very costly to finance it. But should I get the budget for it, that is the kit I would buy, and would not compromise on the craftmanship and great quality of the product. If I cannot afford it, then I would not invest in lesser quality!
