  • Positron Dynamics is out to make space travel to distant stars a reality using antimatter. Antimatter is the most energy-dense material known. Positrons are the easiest form of antimatter to produce. With physics that is understood today, any hopes of traveling beyond the edge of the Solar System can only be realized with antimatter. To get there, our first steps lie in Earth’s orbit.

Bear in mind whatever speed you achieve on your trip out to Proxima, you'll have to bleed off nearly all of it to even stay in the Proxima system in orbit around the primary. Which means you'll have to turn the craft around at the mid-point and start accelerating in the opposite direction (which we will refer to as "deceleration" for the purpose of this discussion). Looks like antimater propulsion gives you 6.3 trillion miles per year, or 17.2 million miles per day, or 716, 700mph. That's 40 years acceleration and rouhgly 40 years "deceleration" -- that is unless you just want to wave at the Proxima system on your way through.

1000 years ago wind grinding grain and pots to throw out sewage was our tech level; 200 years ago, we finally figured out how to make an engine, 100 years ago, we made the first powered aircraft, 50 years ago we landed on the moon, 10 years ago we made a self-parking car, and tomorrow we'll have antimatter rockets... our rate of technological progression is exponential. If we launch a craft on a 40 year journey, it will probably be worth making sure the rocket is up-gradable mid-flight as it gets passed by successive generations where we realize we can compress antimatter, or that folding space really is the faster, safer way to travel.

Nice "concept talk", but the meaningful information is missing. What's the efficiency of the new positron moderator? Is it twice as efficient (meaning 0,2%)? Ten times? Also, what's the "energy density" of using an isotope for positron creation? Because taking an isotope to create a positron means you get fractions of a percent of the weight as actual antimatter. Coupled with the losses of the blackbox positron moderator, what are your calculations in terms of efficiency? Also, how do you deal with the logarithmically declining thrust from the isotope decay during flight? Will you create isotopes on the spaceship itself? If so, how much energy would that take and would it still be economical?
Show us some data, or at least some maths...

That would be the business pitch with no complicated science. Just hearing facts about the theoretical energy density and production of antimatter is very dubious. Not to say they won't achieve something in the future, but I think if they had a more significant technical breakthrough at this point they probably would have mentioned it.

Where a hall effect thruster delivers 10 to100mN thrust you surely can divide this thrust by 1,000,000,000,000,000. The problem is, there definitely is no such radioisotope with the specified requirements. It has to produce beta(+) radiation (these particles have an energy 4000 smaller than protons or neutron) in "grain" dose size in minutes... Such thing would instantly explode with a giga bang! If you want to "create" such giga radiator it would take several mulitples of 1000 of nuclear power stations... And this material would be not stable. The thrust to weight isn't so important when you're in space. The exhaust velocity is more important. I've seen a paper that postulates an engine with an exhaust velocity of 0.7 c and a thrust of 0.01 g. Both of these values are way higher than what ion/electrostatic drives are capable of. Higher thrust with lower efficiency would be possible by pumping in more matter in an 'afterburner' manner.

My knowledge in this area is limited but that's what it seems to me.

Contrary to what most folks seem to be saying about this clip, the presentation deliniates a feasible method for using the energy released in a nuclear fission reaction to generate a propulsive force that does not require the craft to use additional propellant. To be clear, a high intensity, source of low velocity positrons is described. This is used to induce fission of a suitable nucleotide generating highly energetic charged particles. The fission is carried out in physical congiguration that allows the charged particles to be captured and directed away from vessle using an electromagnetic field at 10% the speed of light... an extraordinary and very specific claim.
In this talk, the individual does not quantify the specific positron production capacity, or the yield of fission products per unit of positron generation.
But this talk is not the place for that. It would be lost on an audience of laypeople, and in all likelyhood it is currently uncalculatable with a high degree of confidence by any known approach.
That's why this is exciting. He is saying we have invented this positron moderation device that we believe might make the concept viable. But we don't know for sure. Fund us in order to develop the science and mathematics and experimental data that we need in order to make that determination. It is bold. It is risky, it may not work. But there are many reasons why we should find out. Even if it dorsn't work what we learn from the failure moves us closer to the civilization changing prize of pseudo-propellantless thrust and space travel at high fractions of lightspeed.

E=mc2 is DIRECTLY AND FUNDAMENTALLY DERIVED FROM F=ma. F=ma AND E=mc2 PROVE that ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS ALL of SPACE is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE); AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. "Mass"/ENERGY involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE consistent WITH/AS what is BALANCED ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL FORCE/ENERGY, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT !!! Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. INDEED, A PHOTON may be placed at the center of THE SUN (as A POINT, of course); as the reduction of SPACE is offset by (or BALANCED with) the SPEED OF LIGHT; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ALL of SPACE is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE), AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Great. The ability of thought to DESCRIBE OR RECONFIGURE sensory experience is ULTIMATELY dependent upon the extent to which THOUGHT IS SIMILAR TO sensory experience. (THOUGHTS ARE INVISIBLE.) Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY.
Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is FULLY INVISIBLE AND black. The perpetual motion of WHAT IS THE EARTH is NOW explained. GREAT !!! The idea that THE PLANETS are "falling" in what is "curved space" in RELATION to what is THE SUN is PROVEN to be NONSENSE. So, the falling objects must be considered in RELATION to WHAT IS THEN THE ORBITING EARTH. GREAT !!!!!!!!!!

The intro to this talk is weak. There is no need to start off a talk about _why_ we should have better rocket technology. Everyone in the room already agrees with that. Just get on with the antimatter portion of the talk. By the way, I love how he tried to hype up the audience with the possibility of traveling to the nearest "habitable" planet. The planet he's talking about (it's name is "Proxima b") is most definitely *not* habitable, despite being in the _habitable zone._ The habitable zone just means that a planet is located inside a region where temperatures would permit water to exist in its liquid form. However, the star ("Proxima Centauri") is a red dwarf. That means it's very small and cool, compared to the Sun. That means that its habitable zone is *much closer* to the star. The planet orbits its star at just 5% of the distance that earth orbits. In fact it orbits much closer than even Mercury, our closest planet. Whereas earth takes 1 year to orbit the sun, Proxima b whips around Proxima Centauri in just 11 days. In other words it's VERY close to its star. The problem is that being so close makes it much more susceptible to solar activity. Proxima Centauri (and many red dwarfs) are considered flare stars. They go through a very long period of being unstable. Earlier this year, the star just had a solar flare that increased it's light emission in the visible spectrum by a factor of 38. Could you imagine walking outside at noon and all of a sudden the sun gets *38 times brighter* ? You would die instantly. Your body would be engulfed in flames. There would be nothing left. Additionally, orbiting so close to its star means that it receives over 2000 times the solar wind that Earth receives. This wind has long ago blown off the planet's atmosphere (similar to Mercury). Additionally, the emission in the UV spectrum is far higher and having no atmosphere to block it means the surface facing the sun is absolutely sterile. I forgot to mention that being in such a close orbit means that the planet will be tidally locked to the star. That means one side _always_ faces the star, and the other side _always_ faces away. It does not spin. There is no day/night. In summary, it's not a good planet to visit and not a good introduction to a talk about antimatter.

No trace of it having interacted with matter was ever found in the entire universe. Physicists almost gave up, they don't even mention it anymore.
Anyway, I think antimatter and matter formed a whole from first instant of time and are connected at the 0, the virtual singularity. It formed like a pair of a matter-antimatter universes.
