  • Wind blown waves. 16 inch waves on the Cedar River. The first time I ever had water come over the front of the canoe. Wild ride! I got a little wet, but it was worth it.

I bought the canoe in 1977 new. I purchased a 2hp Johnson motor with it (new). I have ran the 2hp until this year. when I bought the 4ph Merc. The 2 hp ran about 8 mph. This runs at 11.5mph. But I always put #150 of sand bags in the front. The lower you keep the front end, the better it goes. As you know, canoes are NOT meant to plain. I have never had trouble with the canoe. I even ran over a steel fence post under the water and it hardly put a scratch in it! As they say in the advertizment, "it will last you a live time". And mine has. I have had it for 39 years and still enjoy going out in it. I use it for fishing and exploring. It gets where most people wouldn't go. But that is just me. I like to get in the back waters. I also have a kayak, which I also use alot. I took the canoe to Boundary Waters once. That I will NEVE do again. It was heavy and with the square stern, it was like dragging an anchor. I've been up there every year for over 12 years. But always took a double pointed canoe. I even made a woodstrip for the trips. The Gurmman is pritty stable and handles waves nicely. But I mostly use it with the motor. And the new motor is like having a whole new boat.
I hope this answered your questions. Take care out there!!

OK, I need your experience......I have a 17 foot old town and I was going to put a 2.5 yamaha on it.
I was going to side mount it next to me for more control .I have a back mount because ( I DO NOT HAVE A SQUARE STERN LIKE YOU ) ....but back mounts are a nightmare too far way to get to for a rock or shore area to lift.
Now I'm moving to the ocean with ferries and salt water and fresh water.
I want to put a 4 hp on side mount as I don't have a flat stern like you.
Is this too much motor for a side mount ??

I bought a 4hp Merc. to replace the 2 horse. The 2 hp weighed about 23 pounds. The 4hp weighs over 55 pounds. I have put the 3 hp on my canoe that I built. It worked very well. But I would not put a 4hp in the side. It is too heavy. Unless you have a fat girl friend to counter act the weight. Good luck.

As you can see, its a narrow river, and right by a city park. But it was just above a large dam. But, thanks for your heart felt concern. Take it easy out there!

Is this particularly dangerous? I put a 30lb thrust on my canoe that only does ab 4hp. I have a diy water sky outrigger on one side. I

In the areas I sometimes go. There are a lot of boat running around. As all canoes. Its best to hit the waves head on. Thanks for watching.

Wow that looked like a wild ride. Looked like you had to throttle down after you turned around, heading in to the wind?

I did slow when heading into the waves. Spray from the waves were getting me wet. I didn't want the camera to get too wet.

I started out with a 2HP Johnson. I used it for over 40 years. Then I bought a 5HP Merc. 4 stroke. It works great. Look at other of my videos. You will see my outfit.
