I discovered "all falls down" from this video and its became one of my main songs. I used it for my grade 8 musical theatre exam and scored 100% on my performance of the song (95% overall for the exam) And honestly the song has just became a huge favourite of mine.

I really like some of Jason Robert Brown’s songs for mezzo sopranos. I like Still Hurting from The Last Five Years and You Don’t Know this Man from Parade. I’ve heard you should keep away from his stuff. I don’t think Parade is that overdone though.

I love A Call From The Vatican! My Aunt is a professional singer and did a lot of cabaret stuff when I was growing up and this was always her go to party piece... Consequently I learnt to sing this before I was even singing nursery rhymes... So there’s me, two year old Sarah prancing around singing a song about phone sex and obviously having no clue what it was really about... 🙈😂 My go to lesser known belty song is ‘Fling’ from Lend Me A Tenor which is well worth a listen if you’re not familiar. It’s another raunchy number but those are always the most fun to perform anyway right?! 🤷♀️

I'm classed as a mezzo-soprano and I can sing from around a G3 to a D4 and I can only belt in my chest voice, as soon as I hit my head voice it becomes super airey and if I try to belt my voice cracks like anything. is that normal? or should my range be in a different category???

I recommend listening to some William Finn. Since you’re in the alto range and mezzo, amd most likely have a lower tessitura, try listening to numbers sung by Mary Testa. Infinite Joy, a revue, has some of her best numbers that might fit you.

The term Mezzo Soprano is really just reserved for the Classical/Operatically trained singer. And every woman in the industry should be a soprano who can belt. We are not one or the other. The songs are geared that way-Chest or Head Dominant, but the singer is not. You are cute.
Hello. Yes I know, but many people still refer to the 'belt' musical theatre songs as mezzo soprano... whether it be correct or not. So I thought it would be an easier way to separate the different song ranges seeing as I've already made videos for altos and higher sopranos. Thank you for taking the time to comment x

It takes special training to safely do that to your best ability. I highly recommend a teacher trained in Somatic Voicework (Tm), The LoVetri Method.

I would say this is closer to an alto range personally. I would recommend going to a vocal coach x

Just pick whatever style of song you feel shows you off the best! It also helps to think about what you are auditioning for aswell x

Sounds like you should look up the songs she mentions in the video and see if any of them appeal to you!

HELLO! I'm auditioning for Into the Woods in a month or so and I'm trying to find a song. The term Mezzo Soprano is really just reserved for the Classical/Operatically trained singer. And every woman in the industry should be a soprano who can belt. We are not one or the other. The songs are geared that way-Chest or Head Dominant, but the singer is not. You are cute.
Hello. Yes I know, but many people still refer to the 'belt' musical theatre songs as mezzo soprano... whether it be correct or not. So I thought it would be an easier way to separate the different song ranges seeing as I've already made videos for altos and higher sopranos. Thank you for taking the time to comment x
