I loved this one! A lot of grown up sub text…abuse, not talking, keeping pain secret…and that makes a monster in the closet. The mom’s behavior shows the denial and lack of communication from being in the abusive relationship She’s kind of shut down. This episode had some great characters. I love the council road repair guy. Were their stupid bits? Sure. It’s doctor who. But the characterization was spot on. This is my husbands favorite episode. He’s not in fandom, but he loved this and quotes it all the time. I remember when the 2012 Olympics aired some of my kids friends were jokingly waiting for the doctor to carry the torch

One of the very first Doctor Who companions in the 1960s was his granddaughter, Susan Foreman. So yeah, he was a Dad but not much was revealed about his kid(s) and Susan’s parents.
Susan is often alluded to in Classic and New Who and one of the most iconic Classic Who scenes was when she was left behind after finding love and the First Doctor (William Hartnell) delivers the “One Day I Shall Come Back” speech

Even when I watched this episode back in 2006 I wasn't a big fan of it, and as time has gone on I grow less and less fond of it. Even learning it was written in a rush to replace another episode that fell through doesn't help - a lacklustre episode is a lacklustre episode, regardless of the reasons why.
I think it's mostly the acting. I don't think anyone's really all that great here, surprisingly - it feels like everyone's being a little too cartoony and over-the-top, which doesn't mesh well with the more serious elements of the script, and the child actor unfortunately is the worst offender here (which feels really mean-spirited to say, since, y'know, she's a kid, so please don't feel like I'm attacking her personally - this could very well be the fault of the director not guiding her properly, or any number of other factors).

I very much disagree that in has no place in a children's show. Those kind o situations are, unortunately, all too common in reality and bringing awareness to it is one o the most eective weapons against it. Additionally, it teaches that, should that situation come to an end via the death, arrest, or divorce o the abuser; it is VERY important or the child/children and the good parent to not distance themselves rom each other and instead make an eort to connect and help each other heal. This season of doctor who was unfortunately the victim of massive BBC budget cuts. The original idea the little boy who won the doctor who competition had was that the Abzorbaloff would be the size of a double decker bus. This was changed to save money. Also this episode, fear her, was written last minute hence why the plot feels underdeveloped. Originally an episode written by well known British comedian Stephen Fry that was set in the 17th century had been the plan, but again it was too expensive with things like costumes and horses.
