      Hey there, that's very interesting how walking takes you to another level, even walking after meal change and helps the metabolism, I'm a big walker almost like Forest Gamp;) I also like to walk late night where the stars are brightening above giving another special spectrum or early in the morning towards the rising sun full of new energy for a new day, where just after words to have a good appetite for healthy breakfast. I don't really count the steps rather hours, but I must say that it's great that you are inspiring other people.. (and yes going back to covid time many people discovered walking (Switzerland had no lockdown) or just simple activities)
      You are definitely one of the bright stars on the sky to many people.
      Great new day:)

      I have had GI and bloating problems for many years. I was diagnosed with SIBO and take a motility drug which helps, but I STILL had bloating until I recently tried Atrantil which was developed by a gastroenterologist to treat methane SIBO and also just anyone who experiences bloating, GI discomfort and/or changes in bowel habits and it's completely natural. After taking 2 pills 30 minutes before meals for a week, my bloating was gone. I still take it but am going to titrate down to a maintenance level at some point. It's been a miracle for me. Not only for bloating, but also for healthy "bowel habits", which I had not experienced in so long that I just thought it was my new normal. Anyway... just wanted to share that. I've also read the Dr. Peter Attias book and thought it was great! I'm buying that skin, book, as well. Thank you for sharing.

    There are many books out there on the topic of diet, lifestyle and health - and I have read many of them. But I found that the one book that condenses the most important topics on health and gets it right, is the book "Perfect Health Diet' by Paul Jaminet and his wife. Now, 10 years on since first reading this book, my own knowledge on the topic of diet and health has grown immensly - thru reading other books, studying evolution of the genus Homo, learning about the ways of hunter gatherers etc - whenever I reread this book, I realise they get all the topics spot on! I also have this book on my shelf. I find the PHD is almost a reference book you can go back to again and again. Even ten years on, the book is still has great value. Their PHD blog which, last I checked he keeps available even though it is no longer updated regularly, dovetails nicely with the book. The comments section is full of valuable discussions.

    I'm at this weird split between books and podcast and having an opinion about them. Sometimes I wonder when you should read a certain book.
    When it comes to self-help or personal development, I believe there are 3 main applications: 1) The book that helps you prepare, 2) The book that helps you continue, 3) The book that helps you relate. They can be mixed, of course. Deep Work can help you get started with a good foundation, but also helps you motivate when you ask yourself "why?" A book like "Skin in the Game" or "Black Swan" mixes the 2nd and 3rd. Not only does it help you answer "why?" but also helps you relate with your personal experiences.
    So, it's not easy for me to recommend any book without also saying when I think it adds the most value in your process.

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  Před měsícem +1

      So true! This is why I usually am reading 3-4 books at once. They all serve a different purpose (eg. inspirational, informational) and I select which book will address my needs on any particular day. I still haven't read "Skin in the Game" even though I am very familiar with the concept. I will add it to my list! Thanks :)

    Hi Robin, thank you so much for these recommendations. I have read (usually listen to) some of your books. In particular, 'The Expectation Effect', is as you say it is an enlightening read. One of my main problems is that I buy and read books, but fall off the wagon, so to speak, on following through with the implementations. I am just about to buy "No Bad Parts', of all the books that one today was shouting my name. Yesterday I was in such a rut, (and procrastinating in every area of my life) that I watched a CZcams video on Brian Tracey's 'Eat the Frog'. Just that little shift in mindset meant that this morning I have already eaten my frog. As I am sure that you are aware the main point that Tracey makes is to do the most important job (frog) first thing in the day and it will have a positive impact on one's life. If anybody is interested the whole audio book is available on CZcams for free and less than 3 hours long. Great channel Robin, thanks again.

      @TheScienceofSelfCare  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Thanks for sharing! Procrastination is something I can really relate to. Hehe
      I think it’s quite relevant to the “no bad parts” ideology. Rather than scold ourselves for procrastinating, we can be curious about what this part of us is accomplishing.
      Another book I read to better understand my procrastinating tendencies is “Stop Self Sabotage” by Dr. Judy Ho.
      Tomorrow I’m going to start listening to “Eat the Frog” 🙏🤍✨

    Not a recent book but a classic of alternative thinking:
    Finite and Infinite Games by James Carse
    It fosters a shift in viewpoint that admittedly must partly be there already in order to understand the book in the first place. No practical advice like most on your list but works on general principles. Once read you won't forget it.

    I've only got time to add my top book tonight, but will add some more later. "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. No book (not even David Goggins...and he inspires me a ton), like this book. Science, history, insights, all wrapped around an unbelievable story that you can't put down. I finished the book, and immediately read it again, and again. I read it 4 times in the first week, and 10 times in the first year. Then I bought 20 copies and gave them out to family & friends for Christmas. Definite life changer.

    Have you read "The Sweetness of a Simple Life" by Diana Beresford-Kroeger or "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Both are written by scientists who weave ancient wisdom into their teachings. Beautiful reads.

    Peter Attias Outlive was the best book I've read in some time. Just finished it, hungry for more.
    He briefly referenced "Comfort Crisis", by Michael Easter. I am very much enjoying that right now. Inspirational for people wanting to get outside and stretch thier limits.
    The Story of the Human Body by Daniel Lieberman is an interesting look at human evolution.
    One Simple Thing by Eddie Stern changed my life dramatically. It was my first introduction to the concept of what I am (ie I am not my thoughts, my emotions, or even my body). He explains the science behind yoga and the nervous system. It doesn't read as easily as a book like Attia's, but it had a profound impact on me.
    Healthy at 100 by John Robbins isn't as scientific as Attia's, but it's full of common sense and very inspirational.
    I tried Untethered Soul but disliked it so much that I felt worse rather than better while reading it and put it down. I have read many yoga philosophy books, this one, in my opinion, is terrible.

    Romans 12:2 KJV - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
    2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV
    16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
    17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

    just fyi Attia is a surgeon and doesn't even know what he doesn't know when it comes to nutrition, really just reckless for him to opine about it, probably harmed a lot of people with his non evidence based opinions

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  Před 5 měsíci +2

      I understand this perspective - thanks for sharing! I did find that (overall) he made good points based on literature. At certain times he was a tad contradictory (against epidemiology at one moment but then also using it at other moments). That said, I think it’s still one of the better health books out there at the moment. :)

    • @tayloranderson456
      @tayloranderson456 Před 5 měsíci

      His general ideas and emphasis that we need more prevention and early intervention are spot on and much needed, but his ideas for going about that are poorly researched to put it nicely, especially with regard to nutrition. He (like most MDs) are grossly under qualified to talk about nutrition, and have a fundamental conflict of interest when it comes to actually addressing the causes of many diseases. It's a lot more than a tad contradictory that he writes a book about prevention and then pretty much disregards the most impactful tool we have. @@TheScienceofSelfCare

    • @tayloranderson456
      @tayloranderson456 Před 5 měsíci

      More than a tad contradictory imo, he wrote a book about prevention and improving public health then pretty much disregards one of the most impactful tools we have. And what little advice he does give is poorly researched. Very possible he will harm more people than help because of that. That said his initial premise is really spot on, we really do need to focus more on prevention and catching things early. @@TheScienceofSelfCare

      Thanks for sharing. Regardless of whether these specific individuals have mental health issues, I have read many GREAT books by people with mental health issues. In fact, they’re some of my favorites. I think books are a way to understand a new perspective and it’s up to us to take what’s relevant and weave it into our own lives. I am in no way going to go on a crazy workout binge after reading Goggins books but I do feel inspired to be more proactive when it comes to making my dreams come true. To me, it’s all about cherry picking and learning from different perspectives. :)
