A: It all depends on how you take these things. The person you mention was so sweet enough to send that video to me. I appreciate the talent of the artiste, but with those four chords, he sang only eight songs; I can sing 200 songs. In rock ‘n roll, these are called four-chord compositions, and such compositions have always succeeded with people. When I’m composing for a song, there will be a loop playing, and I’ll be composing the tune for two hours. That two-hour composition can be made into 10 songs. I choose the best phrases which the director and I like (and turn them into a song). Any composer does this…
As for your other question, what you call repetitive, that’s my signature. You should feel that it is a Harris Jayaraj song. If someone says, “This doesn’t sound like a Harris Jayaraj song”, then, that’s the biggest criticism. A Rajini film should look like a Rajini film. If it doesn’t, we miss that signature. Like I said, people expect certain things from certain directors and music producers. What people expect from me is clean quality sound, the drive, good words (lyrics), beautifully derived performances from the singers and the musicians… what we call pitch-perfect. I’m very happy that they can see the difference between my song and the other songs. So, that’s actually good news.
