The Brighter Day was like The Guiding Light in being a radio soap opera that ran on both radio and TV for a few years--so you get the announcer here not just announcing the show, but explaining what is happening as the scene opens. (They didn't broadcast on radio and TV simultaneously; they did the radio show from a radio studio in the morning, then went across town to their TV studio to perform the same script, both performances live. Then they would rehearse the script for the next day's program.)

It was soap operas, packaged meals and cigarettes which paid for airtime

I would love to see an episode featuring Patty Duke. She played on this soap right before she starred in THE MIRACLE WORKER on Broadway.

I wonder if they let her histrionics fly? She did some truly crazy work as a child actress. K

Watched Lois Nettleton a few nights ago in a Dr. Kildare episode titled, My name is Lisa, and I am Lost, ....what an incredible performance. The ending was pure gold.

Wow, I love Lois Nettleton and had no idea that she had appeared on a daytime soap opera! One of my very favorite "Twilight Zone" episodes is called "Midnight Sun" starring our Lois. She had a very successful acting career which lasted for many decades, starting in the 1950's. Bless her heart and memory!

@Draper Scott i am struggling to see her due to the darkness of the old and aged black and white film, i think? Thats why i knew who it was. Blame it on a tiny screen and a 70 year old kinescope and my weary eyes lol!

Thank you. Nice to see Lois Nettleton and Hal Holbrook. And that scene with Grayling (Hal) and his minister father is fun as you could tell there were some screwups they were trying to get through - the entertainment of live (or live on tape).

Cheer is still being made, but it no longer contains the "Blue Magic Whitener." (Ironically, they took the bluing out after people complained about stains on wet laundry)

I've heard of Shasta, I never knew it was a hot cream shampoo hair treatment, but I knew of Shasta as a soda pop drink. Can you imagine what Shasta hot cream shampoo hair treatment & soda pop drink have in common? It would sound like a hat could take a shower & cola would splash all over on you. I'll settle for a root beer float & drink all of it for a clean body.
