  • FACT: Over 80% of jiu-jitsu techniques are useless when strikes are added to the fight. In this detailed slice from the Gracie Academy Street Defense Mastery Seminar, Rener demonstrates some critical components of the Punch Block Series to illustrate the huge differences between "street fight distances" and "sport grappling distances." To own the principle and learn the most important distance management concepts from the remaining seven positions in a fight, make your way to a Gracie Super Seminar as soon as possible!

    Jiu-jitsu needs to be trained with strikes. Learning to defend against strikes on the ground is crucial for self defense. Using strikes, such as upkicks, to create distance and return to a standing position should be part of the basic curriculum
    This should be standard teaching in BJJ schools. Jiu-jitsu for a grappling competition and jiu-jitsu for a street altercation are completely different.
    Furthermore, this is what most people are expecting to learn when they sign up at a BJJ academy. Not enough emphasis on defending against strikes & street self defense is main the reason most people quit BJJ. Too many schools focus on pure grappling only.

      BJJ was trained as a complete martial art decades before the UFC or MMA events ever started. World BJJ champion & Brazilian Top Team founder Mario Sperry spoke at length about how original BJJ was completely different than today's sport BJJ. Original BJJ was developed for no rules Vale Tudo fighting and self defense.

      Jujitsu is self-defense. If you’re not training against punches and kicks and multiple opponents and complete random scenarios and weapons etc. etc. then you’re not training jujitsu. Jujitsu came from the Japanese battlefield and the streets of feudal Japan. We need to remember that. It is a means to protect life. It is BUDO.

    I'm beginning to think that there needs to be a completely separate, optimized curriculum for self defense BJJ as opposed to tournament/sports BJJ - perhaps with it's own belts/levels. Otherwise things will always get mixed up and the applicability will decrease more and more (just like it did with many traditional martial arts).

    • @MZITinfo
      @MZITinfo Před 7 lety +7

      Not really, combatives is a beginner program for people prior to blue belt. I think it's excellent stuff, but it doesn't offer content for more advanced levels. I was thinking about a curriculum for self defence white to black belts, and another one for sports white to black belts.
