- FACT: Over 80% of jiu-jitsu techniques are useless when strikes are added to the fight. In this detailed slice from the Gracie Academy Street Defense Mastery Seminar, Rener demonstrates some critical components of the Punch Block Series to illustrate the huge differences between "street fight distances" and "sport grappling distances." To own the principle and learn the most important distance management concepts from the remaining seven positions in a fight, make your way to a Gracie Super Seminar as soon as possible!

i love that rener talks like he's discovering what he's talking about as he's talking about it. so excited about everything. gotta love it.
Yeah i watched this video on 0,75 speed because of this.
the renergy is real
@@soaringeagle9597 My new favorite word lol
It looks like that because of his facial expressions, I noticed what you mean
And all his clone instructors talk the same way
chop sticks my friend. who wants sushi?
great stuff lol
Jiu-jitsu needs to be trained with strikes. Learning to defend against strikes on the ground is crucial for self defense. Using strikes, such as upkicks, to create distance and return to a standing position should be part of the basic curriculum
This should be standard teaching in BJJ schools. Jiu-jitsu for a grappling competition and jiu-jitsu for a street altercation are completely different.
Furthermore, this is what most people are expecting to learn when they sign up at a BJJ academy. Not enough emphasis on defending against strikes & street self defense is main the reason most people quit BJJ. Too many schools focus on pure grappling only.
Ronin ValeTudo then you have mma
BJJ was trained as a complete martial art decades before the UFC or MMA events ever started. World BJJ champion & Brazilian Top Team founder Mario Sperry spoke at length about how original BJJ was completely different than today's sport BJJ. Original BJJ was developed for no rules Vale Tudo fighting and self defense.
Jujitsu is self-defense. If you’re not training against punches and kicks and multiple opponents and complete random scenarios and weapons etc. etc. then you’re not training jujitsu. Jujitsu came from the Japanese battlefield and the streets of feudal Japan. We need to remember that. It is a means to protect life. It is BUDO.
I think if many of the wonderful men who carried jujitsu on to be what it is today saw what it became they would be sick and turn in their graves.
Ronin ValeTudo exactlyyyyyyyyy🤙🤙🤙.
"So we start to think that MMA's a real fight, which it's not"
+Evil5partan Amazes me how many people think that it is though.
+dragonballjiujitsu It's the closest legal thing we have
James Dreger Not exactly. There are many thousands of videos of real street fights, prison fights etc. Its not like we can't easily see what real fights actually look like.
1lostinspace Try it against a good BJJ black belt sometime.
1lostinspace Truth be told I was a bouncer for several years then a correctional officer and a cop. So yea, I know exactly how easy it is to get bit.
I love how frequently Rener has been making videos lately. Keep up the good work bro!
Great info, many thanks , Nick
I'm so happy they grew up to be such great Professors. Helio would be so proud.
BOOOOM!!! BOOOOOOM!!!
Outstanding Rener!!👍🏾 Thank you for making these distinctions between Sport & Street SO clear. It’s BEYOND necessary to preserve the true essence of the MARTIAL aspect of Jiujitsu!!!👊🏾❤️🙏🏾
Every time I watch one of your videos it gets me closer to deciding to begin a journey in your program. Luckily, I live in Phoenix, Az and there is a Gracie center about 1 mile from my house. You guys are awesome. Much respect!
Rener Gracie saves lives.
Really appreciate Rener's emphasis on applying techniques to self-defense scenarios. The entire dynamic seems to change when you're training for competition vs. training for self-defense.
After watching all these videos I seriously cannot stop saying boom like 100 times a day
Steven Stanley lol
Love the videos! Such a great teacher! I’ve bee training three days already and I was able to remember some of the protection techniques today while I was rolling. Hope to do a class or a seminar after I get a few months under my belt.
Whoa! That head butt defense, heel kick, and ax kick were not on the Gracie Combatives videos! Thanks for sharing. Would love to see you do a seminar in New Braunfels, TX!
Santanu Rahman r u Muslim?
ThereWasMore TWM why are you asking?
I have just recently started my Jiu-jitsu journey. I have been flowing these break downs for awhile now and love it. This type of training for real life situations is exactly what I need. Wish you guys could check out the East coast. If you came I would be there and many others. Preferably New England. Thanks Guys
The end of that video is the most important thing anyone can remember.
love love love, Gracie trained last 10 years, proud and loud, be humble, but if shit hits the fan, I'm ready. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, yall changed my life for the better. I train at LCCT with Louis, Hickson given 6th degree black belt. Much love.
I'm a Gracie Barra student in Albuquerque NM. I find your videos very informative. we would love to have you give a seminar here in Albuquerque. Personally I think the academies need to teach more street fighting self defense style Jiu Jitsu for real life situations. Good luck in Australia! #TeamRousey
I appreciate these free teachings y'all so graciously extend to the public. Thanks from Texas.
I learned as much as I laughed. Great video.
Every respect to you and the passion you have and always display for this art. You guys haven't done any seminars in Kenya. I really do hope that maybe someday I get to roll with you. It would be a great honor.
Tulsa, Oklahoma needs this seminar! You gents are awesome!
I love this guy's personality more than his teachings :)
thanks man
THANK YOU Renee, your videos are dope! I recently started my Jiu Jitsu journey with Eddie Camden here in Georgia, SO MUCH FUN!. I am 48 and wish I had found this 20-30 years ago. I am one of the proudest one stripe black belts walking around - Cheers - FISH
Rener is one of the best teachers ever. Hope to take one of his classes live one day.
He’s so excited and passionate about it I freaking love it
Thanks Rener for returning the art to its roots.
Well done sir. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for being open minded enough to see that there is more to Jiu Jitsu than sport. Peace be with you.
Bro, that mustache is inspiring.

Always Entertaining and extremely educational. ..."leaves you in the gutter..." I love it!
everybody should train this style of jj. jiujitsu has saved me many times in fights
I've been watching this for a few weeks and had my first jiu jitsu class the other day. I was able to do an omoplata on my partner. Your videos have helped out so much. thank you so much Rener for doing these videos.
Rener is the best teacher of anything, ever!
Berlin, brother! You definitely should come teach us. Looking forward to this seminar.
Peace! (Big fan)
-Luiz Bueno
It'd be so easy to just vomit some instructional video for clicks and to get cred on the Gracie name, but you can feel the passion Rener has with every word.
Thank you for being honest about the standard BJJ gym approach and its limitations
I'm 11 and i have a gray and white belt and I have been practicing for about 5-6 months and I love it and your videos
takes your family and leaves you in the gutter lol
+superpanda9810 totally man
+Brock Lesnar Or because you did not feel safe like you feel in a WWE ring?
Alright guys leave him alone. He clearly doesn't want to talk about how he left the UFC because he missed John Cena back at his WWE acting school.
***** Really?
***** Ok. How do you know?
Awesome video! By far one of the best video's for self defense!
Ty for the regular uploads!!
Rener to me is the best Gracie Jiu-jitsu teacher ever. Pretty nice guy.
This is the best advice on street fight self-defense that I've ever seen!
Not where I'm from ! Laying on the ground in a grappling position is the worst thing in the streets where i grew up !!!
We need another Super Seminar in Canada! I went to the one in Sudbury last year and it was great! I think you should come to the only one in Quebec! That would be amazing!!
5:17 when you accidentally come inside😂
Helio Gracies legacy lives on with Rener and Ryron Gracie! Good seminar!
Thanks for the great seminar ❤❤❤
Amazing vid guys! keep em coming!
Toronto, On Open mat academy of mixed martial arts, We have a Fight Like A Girl workshop once a month with Professor Elliot. Still is a great self defence workshop but can still have more.
A seminar in Essex England would be amazing.
The super seminiar needs to take place in Sweden!!!! Great video, as always.
Excellent technique, make so much sense.

I love this guy!
I have left my dojo and am going to Torrance!
Daaaaaaang! We need a seminar in Athens, Greece like yesterday!
This video really open'ed my eyes to what fighting is.
Que vídeo mais bem feito, puxa vida, é inacreditável que a maioria das academias ficam perdendo tempo com apenas uma pequena área do jiu jitsu, por Caiã TABALIPA
No.
Awesome as always more helpful than any bjj lesson I ever had thanx 🇬🇧
I love your passion ... Peter
BoOM!...Sudbury Ontario Canada . Street Defense Mastery Seminar. IS NEEDED.
done a lot of martial arts, including Jiu Jitsu. One thing in common: Control the distance to your advantage.
Of all the videos I have watched, these make the most sense.
A Gracie seminar is needed in London, UK!!
Next super seminar or regular seminar is seriously needed in Europe! Somewhere close to Croatia
When you get to stage 3, it's important to know how to defend the open guard in case the attacker trys to pass the open guard
great video hope you guys come to Maine someday
Super seminar in Yuma, Az and I would be more than happy to help put it together in anyway possible, Rener.
Norwalk, CT - super seminar!
You all are amazing! Thankful for your wisdom and knowledge!
Ps- hope to meet you someday
Rener. You the man. So informative!
Great video, going to practice the technique, God bless you brother
I'll just say this: the best way to achive a good ground submission is performing a great takedown / throwdown. The best way to achieve a good takedown is unbalancing the opponent with some nice striking. Great video as always. Rio de Janeiro for sure!!!!
Thank you for the very valuable free content
Gracie Bros. Please come to England and publically announce some seminar programmes in Birmingham. Major, major city and a lot closer to the north of the country than London that only has a select few clubs and seminar programmes as it is! Would be inspirational to meet and talk with you and personally, I would take so many key concepts and lessons home with me! Street Self Defence feels like such an untouched subject for martial arts, almost like a taboo but at the very least, you scratch the surface and give people what they want... after all, there are no GIs, padded mats, gloves or a law-book down your local alleyway!Much respect to all of you and your teachings. Hope to see you in the near future!
AWESOME video!!! I'm already telling my jj friends to watch.
Realmente o Jui jtsu é incrível, obrigado por passar esse conhecimento
Orlando, Florida needs a Gracie Academy Seminar!
Great video...definitely answered a lot of questions
Guys, I love the way you break things down. if you ever do a seminar in Paris, I am THERE!
Nah
+Mikeztarp Pray for Paris :)
Maybe the next time I should be in New York City in the Bronx Grand Concourse or kingbridge I love your videos I have a granddaughter just sixteen years old I pray that one day she can learn from you and your seminars greatly appreciate God bless you
Thanks Rener! Great stuff!
This was so helpful.
Are you still goin' round the planet? Come to Denmark! We learn Muay thai, Krav maga and there's also a BJJ and 15 or so other arts in the gym of Odense, so I believe that the seminar would be filled with practitioners.
Thank you!
Love it! Thank you Rener.
All good points! Great vid as usual!
Wonderful instruction!
Come to philly. We love you guys!
Great lesson to be learnt here.
Strongly hope the seminar will be held in Japan sometimes! Strongly Hope!! It is difficult even to buy the Gracie Combative DVD box here in Japan :(
Rener come to Denver I would love to attend one of your seminars!!!
"Chopsticks my friend.. chopsticks
Who wants sushi?"
Awesome! I will be joining when possible. I'm currently homeless but I need this. Thank you.
The next street defense seminar needs to be in Los Banos, CA!
Thank you Master Gracie.
I'm beginning to think that there needs to be a completely separate, optimized curriculum for self defense BJJ as opposed to tournament/sports BJJ - perhaps with it's own belts/levels. Otherwise things will always get mixed up and the applicability will decrease more and more (just like it did with many traditional martial arts).
Not really, combatives is a beginner program for people prior to blue belt. I think it's excellent stuff, but it doesn't offer content for more advanced levels. I was thinking about a curriculum for self defence white to black belts, and another one for sports white to black belts.
MZITinfo its called master cycle my friend. self defence plus spirts jits all thr way to black belt and betond.
I disagree, the master cycle is just the regular curriculum post blue belt. It's not specialised on self defence, and many things are actually counter productive for self defence I would say
Valente Brothers offer an entirely self defence oriented BJJ curriculum.
Agreed same thing that append to judo
So... I watched this video and learned a lot. And now I'm rewatching it again after sparring with my friend. He's a solid guy and when I was in Guard and I pulled him on top of me, it was my first time understanding how weight over my stomach is a super effective strategy to taking your opponents wind from them.
What do you do in this situation? I was focusing on controlling my breath as much as possible while sparring and am making that a foundation of my training. I'm having fun and glad to be able to ask these questions before it really matters.
Great video. Makes perfect sense to me.
Mississippi needs one! Anywhere within an 8 hour radius would work too! Road trip!
Great lesson.
Bas Rutten explanation style... Booom!
Bonnng!
Fuck i love bas rutten he's hilarious
And some of that da-daga-da-daga-dadang.
Wavemaninawe 😆😆😆
Wavemaninawe I'm sorry no I'm not
yeah, Tucson, Arizona needs a seminar, no wait! we need a gracie school.
this is awesome, Rener sir you are awesome.
I love these self-defence videos. They're no bullshit and include so many variations :)
Man Hell of a video great explanation and your info was right on thanks for sharing
