    I'm sure it's situational but in my testing I have found Active Steady Shot and Catalyst make for the best stabilization if you can deal with the crop from both. I tend to shoot with Active Steady Shot since in most cases that is stable enough for my needs but if not I apply a 10% crop in Catalyst and we are good to go. The shutter speed thing might be an issue for some but for my needs it's not an issue. Thanks for the video! Cheers.

    Thanks for sharing. I'm new to videography, but familiar shooting stills. I want to shoot some ski action next week on vacation, never used Catalyst Browse, but think it may be perfect for what I want to do.
    Did I understand you correctly...? That it's best to not worry about setting active stabilisation and go half the 180 degree speed setting? i.e. for 24fps go not 1/50 but 1/100 shutter. For 30fps shoot not at 1/60 but 1/125 and 60fps go 1/250th?
    I have an FX3, but there is a limit to the kit I can ski with and want, as a priority, to shoot some really good sports action stills, so I'm taking my a7iv with my main zooms (I love primes, when I can, but can't heft those as well). I know my FX3 is a better video camera (eg 120fps and less rolling shutter) than my a7iv, but 12Mp stills aren't going to cut what I need, especially if I need to crop (as I usually do). I'm packing a 16-35mm PZ f4 and GMs mkii 24-70 and 70-200mm. Normally I find that the 24-70 gives me best results working pretty close to air jump action with mountain backgrounds for context.
    I want some talking head to camera, so thought of shooting my a7iv at 24fps in 4k, S-Cinetone and outputting via DaVinci to a 24fps timeline. I think I will need ND filtration (as it's pretty bright) so was intending doing a custom white balance to compensate for any small colour shift introduced by a VND. If I can then I will shoot with more neutral fixed NDs. I'm thinking of slowing 30fps to 80% and 60fps to 40%. I plan to do VO, music or foley SFX for action clips separately to avoid issues slowing 30 and 60fps.
    Because of my inexperience doing alpine action video, I'm unsure what is the best frame rate to use for fast pace tracked and panned action is? Any tips or advice from anyone would be appreciated. I can't manage to ski with my DJI gimbal so I'm thinking that Catalyst Browse will be near perfect for my needs. I realise that there will be a crop factor for using CB and also shooting 60fps on an a7iv. Unless I can rig one of my ski poles as a makeshift monopod, then everything will be hand held. That will be unworkable normally with a 70-200mm, but a faster shutter of 1/250 for 60fps may just work. By the time I get to view on a big monitor, it will be too late to go back and re-shoot, so I really need to get the technicals shot right first time.

      @LeeZavitz  Před rokem +2

      Did they really? I actually didn’t know this. That’s huge for blackmagic shooters. It’s so much better than warp stabilizer. Plus if it’s already built into resolve that’s amazing

    • @avdcam
      @avdcam Před rokem +1

      @@LeeZavitz Yup it was a free firmware update if you can believe it. I'm hoping Sony actually doesn't make a plugin but instead updates their codec spec to allow third parties to read back the accelerometer data. If they did that then Resolve could use their existing software and instead of reading back the data from blackmagic cameras they get it from Sony's directly. It would be extremely useful for VFX and camera tracking work too, so if the data can be extracted it would be a boon for camera matching teams everywhere.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  Před rokem

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle Před rokem

      I'm sure you figured it out already. Put your camera into manual first. You would normally set your shutter to twice your framerate for the right amount of motion blur (for 24fps you use a 1/50 shutter speed). For stabilizing the footage you don't want motion blur, so you double the shutter speed (or higher). So for 24fps use at least 1/100 for the shutter speed.

      Unfortunately not. Sony could easily add this, as all that is missing from the metadata is the focal length (which we know we can manually put in for IBIS using manual lenses). There are lens adaptors you can buy to add the ability to define focal length, but they're only available for certain mounts and limited to the focal lengths covered.

If you have a video file that is 10-bit colour and you modify it any way within Catalyst Browse, when you come to save the file it will have its colour resolution reduced to 8-bit. If you want to keep 10-bit resolution you will need to RENT Catalyst Prepare. As a comparison, if you buy a Blackmagic camera, you get the Studio version of Davinci Resolve with all future updates, an IMMENSE software development, for free (worth £275).

      Really strange to me that it needs to be a 'smart af' lens for it to work. I suppose they could just program the gyro data to not record if the lens on the camera isn't communicating because they assume theres no lens? In which case maybe it can be spoofed by using an adaptor that just pretends to be some random lens.

      Finally becoming mainstream, gyro stab is so amazing and I'm surprised it took this long for other cameras besides action cameras to implement it. Red komodo does not have it unfortunately, which is silly considering it's mean to replace gopros in high budget film making. But now if you want to film with a red komodo for aerial shots and stabilise it you need to run the komodo with a gopro on top of it, and then apply the gopro gyro data to the red footage with gyro flow. All cause a 6 thousand dollar camera with no mechanical shutter did not want to include a gyro for 2 bucks.
