    At 42 I have decided to finally be "serious" about creating art. I've called myself an artist since high school yet I may draw our paint for a few month out of the year and then give up because I'm embarrassed by the quality of art I'm putting out. I don't want to do that anymore so I decided to start learning art through courses but it brings me no joy. I just don't know how to get better if I'm not doing a 100head challenge or fundamentals, etc. I love nature and would love to paint in semi realistic fashion. It's just discouraging when the finished product is medicore at best.

    • @ysvyri
      @ysvyri  Před měsícem +22

      I'm so happy you want to start pursing art more and improving! If doing these studies is not bringing you joy, then simply don't do them. Just draw what you want to draw and you will slowly learn as you progress. If you get stuck, grab some reference material and try to see where you're going awry. The key is to not expect perfection at any point, because your taste will always out pace your skill (google Ira Glass' video "The Gap" and that talks about it more). When you produce something and you can see it's mistakes, that's great because it means you're learning, just keep going and in the next painting/drawing be aware of these mistakes and you can get a little better and a little better each time. In a year look back on your work from now and you'll see the strides you've made. Keep going! You have valuable ideas and visions that the world needs! I wish you all the wonder on your journey 💜

      what makes me happy is i just draw what im in the mood for. or sometimes im like oh i dont know how to draw bread. so today im going to draw some bread. am i an expert? no. am i amazing at art ? no. but i end up drawing a variety of stuff. i also had a late start with art, so i still have a ways to go and learn and practice and grow. and i find 100 head challenege boring and fundamentals boring so i havent done those yet. but i sometimes draw faces and alternate that with my other stuff. so its i guess 90% random stuff and 10% faces/ structured/boring stuff.

      Some art does not look that good but it sells for billions may be because it has a very good meaning or some details that not everybody can see! So do not worry every art is beautiful and speaks its own beauty ❤. Stay strong , positive and go ahead

      Also 40. Self taught since childhood but only for my personal enjoyment. On the rare occasions I have made any art in the past 20 years, my art has always really impressed people (especially graphite portraits which is the only types I ever shared - usually with the subject). I never did challenges or studies or whatnot. I just drew what I loved. Practice drawing what you love, not what people tell you you should draw. Use references. Use lots of references. There is no shame in using references. I'll bet you almost anything that most social media artists are using references off camera.
      The two reasons your art may seem off is 1. Proportions. Measure, measure measure. Draw grids in your reference to start. Use a guide to measure the distance between the eyes, the width of an eye, the height of the eye. As time goes by, you will need to measure things less but you will gain an understanding of the distances between the elements of your sketch.i think I understood this intuitively even as a child but more consciously in my late teens. 2.Tone and contrast. Find the deepest black to the lightest lights. Everything else are just shades in between. That variety from one extreme to another will bring your subject to life. good luck!

    I think that is very true. I had a similar change in attitude. I started to say to myself that no matter what, this is going to be a lifelong pursuit. We never truly "arrive" in art and are constantly "self teaching" by reading books, watching videos, tutorials etc. We just keep growing, the more we learn the more we realise we don't know. Like most things, if we just allow ourselves time to grow, and keep showing up consistently, then we will improve. But we also need to make sure we are actually making art, and not just watching videos or reading books about art. Accept the level we are at, be humble about it and keep at it without being too hard on ourselves. Get used to showing our work to people and not being too precious about it, expecting everything to be perfect. God bless.

      @ysvyri  Před 27 dny +1

      Absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your insight! I often think that we really become comfortable when we accept that we are going to be failing and learning in our craft for the rest of our lives. We have to continually sidestep our own egos in order to pursue this vocation, for sure 😊✨

    I think there’s a huge focus now in the art market, that you need to learn fast, and the best way to do that is a rigid practice. But I agree with you that the moment I improve the most is when I’m having fun, focused in what I like, and that always lead to flexible practices.
    These days I think is easier to expand what you drawn while still focused on what you love most, for me is characters, but because I do want to reveal more about them I have been working in showing different actions and places they could be in. The best part is that with perspective rulers, 3d shapes or even complete 3d environments it’s easy to draw over it without having to spend a lot of time learning about it. And all I learned about lines and colors for characters still work the same for that too. So for me is a win win.

    • @ysvyri
      @ysvyri  Před měsícem +2

      I agree with you! And what's great about your technique is that you're STILL LEARNING! Tracing things was a huge part of my learning process (and still is!) I think it gets a bad rep, but in my opinion, it can be very useful for understanding things. I'm so glad you're focusing and having fun with your drawings! Keep at it!!

    • @Miaulogic
      @Miaulogic Před měsícem

      @@ysvyri Tracing is very helpful for me too and that was one of the first exercises we did on drawing class in university! It is much easier to see how abstract shapes are, how they break and come together while tracing. And the fun thing about about 3d is that can work like an initial sketch, you can take a 3d square but draw a treasure chest, building, or a group of books over it stead. It’s really up how you work best. I don’t like thinking about perspective at all, so the 3d is great for solving that.
      It took me a while to get here, I passed a long time worried about the right way to do things, so I’m glad too to have gone back to have fun and just doing what I like!

    I needed this. Truly my soul needed this. I am 37 and even though that does not bother me, trying and failing at being on social media as an artist has up until this year. Sometimes I would get a lonely feeling when I would post something I was really proud of and get no response from community. So, this year I decided to stay off of social media and find myself as an artist again. You reminded me to not be so hard on myself while trying to learn new things and stretch myself both as an artist and as a person. Thank you for all that you do and who you are ❤

Embrace the process, celebrate your progress, and never forget the value of your art, regardless of external validation. Hi Kim, a really beautifully made video which I found so relaxing and a lot of things seemed to resonate with me. I truly believe that whatever passion you have as a kid, regardless what anyone says especially your closest kin, it will grow within you until you're old enough to decide for yourself if this is something you really want to pursue or if it was just a passing faze. I too am self taught and I'm still learning ( as are we all ), but my one regret in life is during my teens I never really took art seriously enough to actually learn the craft of drawing & painting from a tutor. Instead I've stumbled along in my own way trying my best to soak up as much information as I can. But the older one gets, that option to go to college to study seems more & more daunting. It's taken me this long to realise that fine art is what I really want to learn. Mastering drawing is one thing but being able to paint what you've drawn is something which really excites me, and it never ceases to amaze me how by just adding the slightest bit of colour to a flat black & white sketch, how your sketch really comes alive...and that's what I want to achieve. Thank-you so much for posting this brilliant video and as I'm new to your channel I will be checking out your other videos and you will definitely be getting a sub from me. I'm mesmerized by how you paint flowers, it's as if I could pluck them right out the screen! I also love how you're watching Secret Garden as you work, it's very fitting.
    It's funny you mention landscapes because I've currently taken up the challenge of improving my landscapes (in a medium I'm not too confident in which is acrylic gouache) and it's been an adventure haha

      Awh, thank you! 🌸 Secret Garden is one of my absolute favourite films (and books!) which I don't think would surprise anyone, haha. I grew up watching this film over and over!
      Oh! I've wanted to try gouache for a while now! How are you finding it so far?

    • @stroodledoodles
      @stroodledoodles Před měsícem

      @@ysvyri I remember watching it alot as a kid too, I was so jealous of the huge garden in it lol
      I'm still figuring it out! There's an art (heh) to getting the right consistency with regular gouache and acrylic gouache dries pretty quick + doesn't reactivate so I gotta make quick decisions, but overall I'm having fun :)

    As an (almost) 30yo artist, I've spend a lot of years searching (more or less unconsciously) for at least one other artist who I could relate to. For the longest time it was Loish, who has a similar workflow than me (and you!), but her career path is far from what I got and want.
    I'm sorry to extend about my life. I just wanted to enlight why I'm so happy to just have found your channel. I'm looking forward to watch them all while working!
    Thank you for this extremely pretty video, and sorry by advance if in a few months you stumble on a channel similar to yours (it should be in french tho)
    Have a wonderful day ❣

    Thank you for this. As seems to be the case, I watch your videos at the right time for me to hear them. I am currently in the process of trying to find out what I do and don't want in my art, actually getting somewhere in what I want to learn and your advice was what I needed. For example, if I truly want to do watercolour, why am I trying to paint digitally? It's probably why I can't land on a method of colouring I actually enjoy, lol. It's such a simple concept, but powerful if you haven't considered it before within yourself. So, thank you.

    • @ysvyri
      @ysvyri  Před měsícem +2

      Absolutely! ✨ It took me a really long time to learn this for myself! There are always external voices telling us what we should or should not too that it's hard to hear our own sometimes. I hope you enjoy your journey into watercolour! And remember, if you decide to change your mind, that's cool too!

    Hi there ! Thank so much for making this video it resonates so much with me and so many other people. I find myself having this urge to become an artist and draw and paint everything I want to but the fact that I still can’t makes me want to give up like.. I’m never going to be able to achieve that. And one other reason why I feel that way is.. I don’t know where to start. How should I approach learning to draw ? I feel so lost there are so many fundamentals to learn and I just find myself procrastinating because it just feels like a huge mountain is in front of me and I will never be able to get to the top.

    • @ysvyri
      @ysvyri  Před měsícem

      Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! 😊 It feels like a big hurdle, for sure, but think back to when you were a kid. If you wanted to draw a pony or a cool car you'd just pick up your pens and draw it, right? Do that. You will see where you start to struggle, so you can start by looking up references and tutorials for those things. But, don't get sucked into just studying. Keep drawing from imagination! It's what makes it fun! If you do this everyday for a year you'll see a huge improvement. Keep adding up the years and this is how we do it. It takes a long time but you'll get there. Just don't worry about what to learn and when, just start drawing. That's the most important part. You'll feel silly at first, but that's just adult ego. Get into the mind of a child, play, have fun, be imperfect! Create! Make a character! You'll experience the joy of drawing which is what matters most. The skill is just a bonus 💜

    i really love this video… i’ve been calling myself as an artist yet i am not making art for years… i am stuck on what specific style should i create… i dont know but i think the problem is myself… i want to try everything… i want to make chibis, i want to make illustrations, i want to paint too. and to be honest… i never have progress because i am overwhelmed… i am also afraid of picking a niche as an artist because i always believe that there are more things to explore… my problem is i am not focusing on less which as a result i have no progress and i am stagnant artist… no improvements…
    can you give me an advice? i am almost 3 years hiatus and questioning my identity as an artist. :((

    • @ysvyri
      @ysvyri  Před měsícem

      I know this feeling so well! Please do not be disheartened! As artists we are naturally curious people. Sometimes this means we niche down hard on something and sometimes it means we are explorers. I think there's a lot of pressure put on creative people to "niche" in business and social media success. While this advice isn't all bad, I feel it does stifle the creativity of some of us. You have to ask yourself, what do you want out of it? If it's for a hobby then GO WILD. Draw EVERYTHING and ANYTHING do not be preoccupied with gains or progress because that will naturally happen as you find things along the way that you want to learn. Say, you draw a chibi, and you think "Hm, my stylisation of hands could use some work", next time you draw something you know you need to pull up some ref to learn to draw hands better. You just implement it into your next drawing. Or maybe do a couple of studies. Either way works. You rinse and repeat this as you draw and a year down the line you'll see how far you've come.
      If you're looking to make your art work as a business and a success on social media, then that's a whole other thing and has very little to do with learning the actual skill.
      I'd say for right now, just in terms of building the skill, just indulge your curiosity, try not to think of improving, because it will naturally happen. Just explore things and eventually you will see patterns in what you enjoy doing and you can focus on them (if you like) 😊💜
