    Thank you Kelly and Noelle for a very informative episode. I have been knitting for 60 years but am currently knitting my FIRST pair of socks- the Andrea Mowry DRK Everyday Socks. I have a high arch and remembered Kelly recommending that heel. Love the giveaway yarn! ❤

    Socks are one of my favourite items to knit and I loved your special sock episode. Noelle, I used to pull out the wrong needle way too often when I used double pointed needles too. Kelly I have a high instep and arch as well, so I appreciated you mentioning how you deal with it when using an afterthought heel. There’s a free pattern on Ravelry named Twistnado which incorporates a mini heel flap/gusset with a short row heel for people with high a instep and arch. My favourite sock pattern so far is one I knit which incorporated the chart from The Pressed Flowers Cardigan. I named it Inspired Socks. A resource for sock heels that I like to reference when I feel like trying a different one is called Heels by Number by Criminy Jickets. It’s free on Ravelry. Thanks for making this special episode.

    I enjoyed your sock session! My favorite socks to knit are the pair on my needle. I have been knitting socks for 25 or more years now, so I've knit too many to remember names of patterns...lol! Just did the Bear Paws, funny looking off the foot, but great fit. This year I was gifted a LeGear sock machine from the early1900's. My hubby completely restored it. I have named her Odette! Odette knits the fastest socks ever, especially since she is 120 years old!

    Well, I have 2nd sock syndrome . I have made 3 1/2 socks. As far as I can remember they are all vanilla. So 1 sock each of 2 pairs and 1 1/2 of the 3rd pair. I switched to flexiflips on the 3rd pair and really like them. But I got distracted so the 1/2 sock is resting😊. Not sure what my problem is with sock knitting but in 2023 I am going to try my darndest to knit 1 "pair" a month so I can enter them. Wish me luck. Btw, shawls are my favourite and I love, love, love (as Kelly would say) working with fingering weight yarn. Merry Christmas Everyone

    When I retired, I returned to knitting after many years. My goal was to learn to knit socks. I tried double points (I kiept dropping them), magic loop (it worked, but not my favorited), 9 inch circulars (I had to stop knitting for 2 weeks because of the pain in my hands from this method), and finally 2 circulars (my favorite). I chose socks yarn (opal, regia, paton's Kroy, knit picks felici and stroll, and the yarnable monthly sock club). I chose a basic sock pattern(s) (Socks on magic loop by the Crazy Sock Lady and No Fear Shorty socks by Earthtones girl). I then began the knitting. The heel flap and gusset worked fine because I could try on the socks and start the toe when the sock reached the end of my little toe. However, I have now knit 4 pair of socks with an afterthought heel, and none of them fit. I have no idea when to start the toes, so they were all either too short or too long. I do like that heel construction, and will perservere. I did several pairs of socks with an short row heel. None of those fit my enormous heel diagonal (even after adding stitches before starting the heel). I've tried Andrea Mowry's DRK everyday socks, but I absolute loathe all that ribbing. I then tried a plain fleegle heel sock, and have failed three times in getting the heel right. I guess I will keep trying. The little detail that I saved to the end was that I retired last year at 70 years old, so I'm a member of the geriatric set. In addition, I am a diabetic and have to wear Jobst stockings most of the time. I want to knit socks that I can wear over those support hose, but I seen to be having nothing but problems. I will keep it up until I come up with a formula for both cuff down and toe up that works for me consistently. Once I have that solved, I can then begin to consider patterns, etc.
    I cam across your podcast completely by accident. I LOVED it. You gals are great. You have a good chemistry and TONS. of sock knitting experience. I live in Mount Clemens, Michigan, so you initial remark about your location in southwestern Ontario perked my ears up immediately. Perhaps, I will try to come to one of your "Tuesday Night" groups. I can't thank you enough for this podcast. I haven't enjoyed anything this much in at least a month. 😃

    • @betternpopcorn
      @betternpopcorn Před rokem

      You can put your afterthought heel in before you knit your toes. Knit your cuff and leg, then knit a couple inches of your foot. Stop and put the afterthought heel in. Then you can knit the rest of your foot and try on the sock to determine where to start the toe. Susan B Anderson has a great blog post on this. 2 circulars is my favorite too! I hope you find your perfect pair soon. Deb from Florida

    • @KnitsnPieces
      @KnitsnPieces  Před rokem

      Thank you so much 💕 So glad that you found the podcast and welcome to the channel!! I sometimes finish my afterthought heels before I finish the entire sock so that I can try it on and determine where to start the toe. If I’m doing a toe up and an afterthought I measure where to place the heel from an existing pair that I like the fit of. Some people use a sock ruler and mark where to start heels then try the sock on the ruler and once it’s at that mark it’s time to start the heel. This would only work once you’ve knit socks that you like the fit of. I don’t have a sock ruler and often times go by the number of rows. I’m still working out where to start a fleegle heel for a good fit. I find that I am still constantly learning new skills by knitting socks. Hope you can join us live on Tuesday evening, there is a lot of interaction in the chat, and the whole group is so helpful and supportive

    Just found your channel. Really enjoyed. Myself I just do toe up, princess soul, knit one purl one rib all the way. When they have been washed, they live in the clean clothes pile at the foot of the bed. After they have been worn, they go into the dirty hand wash pile at the far end of the bathroom counter. On wash day they go into a large pot with 2 or three drops of Dawn. After a quick bit of hand agitation, I leave them to soak for 10 to 20 minutes. After one or two quick rinses everybody goes through the salad spinner and are then hung in front of the wood stove to dry. Actual hands-on time is about 20 to 30 minutes. For winter socks I hold 100% baby alpaca & SweetGeorga Tough Love Sock yarn. Thick, tough, and warm wet or dry. For summer socks I use a wide variety of merino nylon blends.

    My favorite sock pattern is the Softie Sock Pattern, which I’ve knit many times, and have modified the stitch count based upon the yarn I’m using - from fingering to worsted! I’ve even made knit Christmas stockings from this pattern!! It is top down with a heel flap and gusset, and side toe decreases. And almost every pair knit with 4 dpn’s - 3 on the sock and one working needle. Crystal Palace bamboo needles work great!! Thanks again!! 🧶

    Hello Kelly and Noelle! I love knitting socks, my cousin Johanne taught me how to knit vanilla socks cuff-down with heel flap and gusset, and so far it is still my go-to style. Over the years I’ve changed the foot by doing 3 by 1 ribbing on the top of the foot, and the same ribbing all around the leg for a great snug feeling. I recently learned how to knit two-at-a-time toe-up socks with GSR and I like it too, that method is great for self-striping yarn as you mentionned. They have the same heel as her DRK every day sock only you hold two stares of fingering weight together to make them dk. So they knit up so quickly and they are sooo squishy. And they are fun to mix different yarns and scraps to get different marled looks. And just like the DRK every day sock they looks very odd off the foot or blocker but they fit super well. I have done the colour work in the pattern but use it as a base and mess around with different designs. Shorties, I love the JoJo Slipper Socks by Cosy Up Knits. The Dk one I use to use up all of those bits and do marled scrappy socks, probably my favourite to wear. Looking forward to trying your sock along this year. I made my first sock for my husband over 50 years ago. And I do mean sock, It was a Christmas stocking. And as I sit here working on my second sock, again another Christmas stocking, I am filled with mixed memories. This stocking is for my first grandchild. I am blessed with the memories of when I made my first one, I was tutored by my mother. She would be laughing if she had to watch me struggle, not only do I have no muscle memory of ever doing this, I find that my memory, memory is sorely lacking also. I so wish to honor her as I try to accomplish this by following her much loved and worn pattern. I believe she must have knitted over 50 stockings, before she told us at the age of 91 that she didn’t think she would be able to continue the stocking knitting tradition. It really wasn’t that she couldn’t knit any longer, it was the tearing out that frustrated her. She was always such a perfectionist.
    Well, I feel her frustration. I can’t read her pattern, the scribbled side notes and alterations. No problem, I thought, I have the internet! WOW so many choices. Where are the patterns for straight needles? That part I know, I ever know about double point needles and the seamless toe (didn’t know it had a name). Well I fell down the research rabbit hole. But alas, this morning your CZcams video popped up. What a blessing I can pick and choose what ever style I want, heel, toe, cuff. No one cares about the seams. No one is wearing it. It hangs on a mantle. I have regained the calmness that I remember feeling when I knit.
    So with peace of mind and joy, I just might finish this stocking. Maybe I will venture out to try my hand at a pair of socks, circular needles, cuff down, toe up, I never knew that you had to consider fit. Oh the possibilities.

    Yes, please! My favorite sock is a cuff down vanilla with a Kitchener toe, boring I know.
    I made two pairs of Louise Patterson’s Rambling Friends Socks. These are socks with a lace and cable detail running the whole way between cuff and toe. I did do an anatomically correct toe on both. I needed to be in the right head space. Very pretty pattern.

    If was so fun to watch you both explain sock knitting and very motivating to me. I've been doing a few felted Christmas socks, Aften Julestrompe by Enya Odegaard/aftenstrikk which I now need to embroider on, but I think so far I love my Kura Socks by Miss Evil Knits. They are a dream to wear on cold Wyoming days, more of a house sock for me since I used a bulkier yarn. For my every day socks I always use Fish Lips Kiss Heel which is the first heel that has produced a great fitting sock for my high instep. The Seam Free Rounded Toe and is my go to toe, since 99% of the time I knit toe up. Anxious to try the Fleegel heel and try, again, the 9" circulars. Thanks for all you share and do. I never seem to catch you live, but watch most weeks.
