  • The Fluval stratum vs Eco-Complete vs Flourite is an easy debate due to the fact that only Stratum has nutrients for plants. Eco-Complete is essentially only lava rock and Flourite only contains iron pretty much.
Aquarium Eco-Complete is a form of lava rock that grows bacteria on it for the plants to grow. In my experience it usually takes around 5 to 6 months or the substrate to grow bacteria to feed your plants. So if you plan on just dropping it in your aquarium and feeding your plans that might not work.

Seachem Flourite is a form of clay that houses a lot of iron for plants. This aquarium sucks straight works fairly well but it’s extremely dirty when you first add it to your aquarium. This substrate comes in a couple different colors and it’s super popular in the aquarium hobby.
If I had to make a choice out of all the planted take substrates I would actually use organic potting soil because it has so much nutrients. If you put sand on top of the soil and insurers to hold everything in your aquarium so its not as messy. These big brand substrates designed for aquarium plants work decent but not even as good as the organic potting soil I use.

Dude, you are so underrated. You should be all over the internet. This was one of the best substrate reviews with video of the actual tanks using it. You are the man.

Stratum has no nutrients in it. This is why when you install it, there is no ammonia spike. Something like ADA Amazonia V1 has tons of nutrients in it, causing huge ammonia spikes in the first 4-6 week of install. Additionally, you're using Bio-Stratum with is Fluval now flagship aquasoil, which is just Stratum with benifital bacteria in it. What makes aquasoils so special in their CEC, or cation exchange capacity. This allows them to absorb nutrients from the water column. If your dosing a a holistic fertilizer like Thrive, it the EI method, the aquasoil can be recharged indefinitely. Unfortunately, Flourite (1.7) and EcoComplete (14-16) have really low CECs, where aquasoils have really high CEC (40-50). The problem with dirt, aside from it being really messy, is that it can not be recharged because it's capped. The nutrients under the cap will last a while, but as soon as plants start absorbing the nutrients, the organic dirt days are numbered causing to pull it up and reinstall. I talk about CEC and the importance of it in this video - czcams.com/video/83ggwJmKXWk/video.html

Your videos are sick! My plants tell me Stratum has more nutrients in it then eco-complete and Flourite 🤷‍♀️ nothing more than just my testing here

I know some people say organic potting soil is a great "substrate" to use in fish tanks. However, don't the nutrients deplete after a year or so and then you have to use root tabs, etc?

Exactly the three I was looking at- thanks!! Was actually wondering if I should combine them (either my mixing, layering or varying beds).

Have you ever tried controsoil? How does it compare to fluval stratum?

i could use dirt tank method... mixed with stratum? or it will be to much?
like, (bottom: 1inch) dirt > (mid: inch and half) sand or fine gravel > (top: 1-2inches) stratum...
im still thinking of it before set up my new aquarium... from a 13gallon tank, update to a bigger one like, 38gallons.

Great video. Been interested in the new Bio Stratum. In particular, how well is the newer smaller size holding down plants? Let us know how it works long term, please. Question: Why not mix the three you mentioned? Seems like you'd get the short and long term effects. I also think it would look a little more natural in terms of aesthetics. I like Stratum, but personally, not a huge fan of the look. Looks unnatural to me.

Can I just mix a secchem floride substrate gravel with dirt, where i have one layer of dirt on the bottom and the flourite substrate on the top, to give it a nutrients boost maybe?

I am about to set up my first ever planted tank. I was wondering about the flourite, because I bought some to mix with the pond potting media (it's just clean dirt, lol) I'm going to use, and then cap it with sand. I'm glad to know it's not terrible, but obv not the best. With all the stuff I bought to set this tank up, I just couldn't afford the Fluval anyway. Glad to know dirt is the best!

I believe light plays a big role also in the plants growth just as important as the substrate... I mix the fluorite and fluvel together.. works fine..

i love stratum, i went from killing all my plants in a gravel substrate, to my tank looking like a jungle on steroids. yes its expensive, but makes the hobby so much more enjoyable when you see the plants thriving

    Are your tanks CO2 injected?

  • @basfishermanallyear
    @basfishermanallyear Před rokem +1

Eco complete will not work in a low tech tank w/O ferts. Ive used eco complete and have had good results with Co2 plus ferts and same with flourite. And yes, I have done dirted tanks with good success as well for a long time. The problem with it is once the plants are there they are there for good and you can not gravel vac it as it will bring up all the dirt into the water column. Aqua soils as such need the addition of ferts and some Co2 with brands such as eco complete. 99% of the time when you see really good, thick, and color in scapes they use ferts and Co2 in their tanks. Unless using the dirted method with a good maintenance program. You can achieve good results with any of these brands/methods of using the substrate as long as you understand what it needs in order to have the results you want.

IF YOU USE STRATUM FOR INDOOR HOUSEPLANTS - PLEASE READ!!!
If you use stratum for indoor house plants, have you converted to bio-stratum? If so, what have your experiences been? The stratum
Already explodes my plants in root growth and each leave grows out faster and grows into maturity superbly I am about to add stratum into my Amazon cart, but very tempted to do bio stratum instead!!! Lemme know!!!!
