- The Houston Health Department reported a syphilis outbreak responsible for a 128 percent increase in cases among women and a nine-fold rise in congenital syphilis in Houston and Harris County.
The fact that infants are being affected by this is breaking my heart.

Adult syphilis can be cured with little or no lasting damage. Congenital syphilis cannot. The damage is permanent.
When I married in 1972 we had to have a syphilis test before a license was issued. Maybe this wasn’t a bad idea.
More like an STD test, biotest to see how many partners are, RNA/DNA testing and rearing classes. (Child rearing license included)...
It is good practice to do the testing. Also the testing was done to see how Far the injection of syphillis they had given to people had spread throughout the city/community. Remember the Tuskegee airmen?
I remember when they stopped doing routine syphilis tests because they said it was under control and the cost was too much for the few people who tested positive. The reason it was under control in the first place was because of the routine screening for marriage, pregnancy, hospital admissions , physical examinations etc. Now it is coming back. Oh well.

You don’t have to be promiscuous to contract syphilis. My ex HUSBAND gave me syphilis while I was pregnant. He secretly got treated and left me and our baby to rot! I went 5 months infected, had SEVERE pain, mouth/pallet ulcers, ended up with cholestasis, gestational diabetes, and spent time in the ICU, all because my body was fighting too hard while infected. Did I mention I spent a total of 93 days hospitalized?!
My son was born with it and didn’t have to be! He has speech, hearing and some intellectual challenges all because of my (now) ex husband’s selfishness!

If you see high spike in a syphilis is women, you should see a comparable spike in cases in men. So either one of two things are happening here. Either A, The men are going undiagnosed. In the 80s to early 90s, we still wondered if our dentists or nail techs were spreading the virus to customers through tools, etc. The public toilets? Confusing times. Scary television commercials suggesting we get tested as HIV can take *7 years* to seroconvert caused panic. I wasn't having sex in high school and that was a relief because I had nothing to worry about. I couldn't afford to be promiscuous if I wanted to because it's only sex. Again, not dying over it. I knew what I was doing., too. Been married for 33 years.

I worked in a state prison for 6 years. We would get 1 or 2 syphilis cases a year, now we get 20 a month or more. But I don’t live in Texas. And these are prisoners coming into the system. People are very promiscuous and almost none use protection or condoms. The prisoners admit how many partners they have been with recently and sometimes it’s more than even they can remember. Drug use and pornography play a big part in today’s promiscuity.

I went to a free clinic when i was first pregnant with my son. My ex was with me during one visit. A nutse recognized him. He had come in a yesr before for an std test. He bever returned. Turned out he had syphilis. I did not although they coukd not understand why. I still got the painful penicillin shots though. My Son was unaffected. I do have a very strong immune system even now at age 58.

It’s so important to get an STI/STD screening with your annual physical, if you’re s*xually active . You never know.
Yes and it’s important for people to know that if you go in there and say test me for everything, they don’t. I was almost 30 before I realized that test me for everything didn’t include herpes for example. I think I’ve only been tested for syphilis when I specifically asked for it, usually they just do gonorrhea and chlamydia it’s weird those are the ones I would be least worried about.
Many of these women probably believed they were in monogamous relationships and opted to have sex with just that one partner. Often, women get diagnosed with an STI and then find out their partner strayed. I am not saying women don’t cheat, but I am saying that many women start feeling ill or start experiencing signs and symptoms of an STI, and only then do they realize they are in a relationship with an irresponsible cheater.

You can contract an STI the first time you have sex so it isn't always about promiscuity. Not everyone getting it is being loose. A lot of gay men are on prep so that they don't have to use a condom which only prevents HIV not the other STI's. I think thats insane to be so cavalier about other infections and only be concerned about HIV. This is a prime example of why its better to wear a condom.
