Now that I think about it, the front is actually the safest place to be in this case- Erwin was most likely (although still nearly impossible) to survive. The Beast Titan threw hundreds of fragments at the charge, aiming naturally for the middle because that’s where most people would be gathered. Only a few rocks would make it to the front, left and right, and back.

This is just me, but after watching so many reactions of this episode, it always freaking annoys the shit out of me to see reactors talking crap about the cannon fodder soldiers who are afraid and crying because they don't want to die. It's a fucking massacre out there and most of them are young recruits (Erwin called them young himself). Especially reactors who say shit like "you should just fucking die, stop crying", ironically they're acting EXACTLY like how the merchant guy that Mikasa cut down in S1 acted, that if you draft into the recruits or the military, you should just die bravely with no fear because "it's your job". These people are human beings, not fucking machines. Puking their guts out, shaking in their boots is what happens. Idk, it just pisses me off so much.
Anyway, this is why I like AOT so much, because it portrays this part of war and battle. It's not all just about "hype" and how epic the fighting is, people actually die and they don't want to die, surprise.
Yeah I have watched so many shows and I guess AOT is the only one of the few shows which depicts how war can torment the present and the future generations.
If you everyone during their childhood were fed info to hate one another and to be fair no one is wrong. It shows how cruel the world is

To elaborate the situation, Erwin, Levi and the recruits were at inner side of the Wall of Maria. The giant hole that got broken by Reiner 5years ago was blocked (not sealed) by the first boulder the Beast titan threw when it showed up, stopping the horses and the Survey corps to enter Shiganshina District.
Even if the Survey corps abandoned the horses, flew into the Shiganshina area, they might not be able to access the basement as the Colossal titan wrecking havoc everywhere. The Beast titan and lackeys would've killed all the horses, moved the blockade away and joined Armored Titan and Colossal titans within Shiganshina, killing every soldiers in sight.
Say, Erwin, Levi, ErMiAr, Hange miraculously entered the basement (at the cost of deaths of others at the moment), took whats in store and exit Eren's home. They just couldn't get back to Trost District because they lost their horses (their gas won't be enough to travel that far). They would have to die with everything they knew in the basement AND there's no stopping the enemies to further attack wall of Rose even wall of Sheena if the Survey corps were wiped out.
The Beast titan had it all planned.
AND THAT'S WHY ERWIN DID NOT JUST GO THEN.
Well, it's a fair question. If you're going to die you might as well beeline it to the basement.

What should they’ve done instead?
They didn’t really have many options. The BT blocked the entrance to Wall with a boulder to make sure the horses couldn’t go out, meaning retreat wasn’t an option.
There were a line of numerous 15 meter titans, including the BT blocking going their direction. The boulders would gradually level the entirety of their cover flat, meaning even hiding or using 3DMG would be impossible. And the only one skilled enough to charge forward would be Levi since the other recruits are new and relatively inexperienced.
Needless to say, these guys were doomed the moment that boulder went into the gate.

@@codafett Half up the wall would still have to face the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan. They would die either way. If the attack on the Beast Titan failed, they would not have the horses necessary to escape since the Beast Titan would level the entirety of the region, kill the horses and open the gate and let the rest of the Titans into the city, making the retreat of the half of the recruits into the city meaningless since they would die either way.
The plan called for a do or die charge because if the Beast Titan was left alive, then it was game over anyway since they wouldn't have the horses and couldn't retreat to Wall Rose. They would die in the wilderness.
